I was curious if they would stick to Lucy Gray's book ending because it was so ambiguous.

I think the resolution to her story only works if you think of the grand scheme of things.
She was a performer who loved attention, but now because of the Capital erasing the 10th Hunger Games footage, her disappearing, and Snow never mentioning her again, she's essentially forgotten by all. That's something you know she would never want. Personally I think even a confirmed bleak ending would've worked better, but I get why they left it so open.
 
Just saw it, I will say I am not a reader of the books. I don't recall all of the Hunger Games, I mainly saw it for Dinkledge.

I thought the games were a little quick, but I also liked how low budget the games were. They were struggling to get viewers so it makes sense the games themselves came off fast and cheap. None of the tributes were skilled so it should be rough.Snow also took the games outside in the final act.

Don't they have all Winners Hunger Games every 25 years? The Hunger Games in Catching Fire was the 75th, and they all forced the previous winners to return.

A direct sequel to this prequel where Lucy Gray comes back to compete in the 25th Hunger Games could be a nice premise. I'm assuming Snow after 15 years, already has a position in the Capitol/the Hunger Games committee itself. Its too bad, there's no direct follow up for the book.
 
It was alright I guess third chapter it just drags.
 
I enjoyed it more than I expected. The first 2 chapters were great, but the 3rd did drag a bit, especially with the somewhat forced villain origin story.

Word of mouth seems positive and it had a really good Monday hold with $5.2m, for comparison The Marvels first Monday was just $2.3m despite having a higher OW ($46.1m vs. $44.5m)

Every Quarter Quell was different.
The first QQ the districts were forced to choose their candidates rather than it being a random drawing.

The second QQ there were double the number of Tributes (4 from each district). This was the one Haymitch won.

The third QQ the Tributes were drawn form the former Victors.

Reading those first two QQ would make a good premise for two more Hunger Games films.
 
I saw this today. It was a solid movie and I liked it fine, maybe about the same as Mockingjay 1 & 2 but it didn't grab me the way the first film or Catching Fire did. Unlike the previous Hunger Games movies I didn't read the book first so I'm not sure how closely it followed the source material. The performances were good but I have to agree with others in this thread that the third act dragged a bit. It being split into three separate chapters made me feel like I was marathoning a three-part miniseries rather than watching a movie.
 
After a somewhat lackluster opening weekend ($44.6M) WOM appears to have kicked in and it's weekdays are very strong.

Monday - $5.266m
Tuesday - $6.5m
Wednesday - $7.28m
Thursday - $5.9m

Total going into the weekend is $69.55m and projections show it winning the weekend and possibly coming very close to $100m domestic after Sunday.

Amazing how big a difference WOM can make, The Marvels opened $1.5m higher and a week earlier and after Thursday BOSS is just $0.9m behind ($69.55m vs. $70.45m) and by the end of the weekend will already make more than TM will in its entire run.
 
It was quite obvious this would have better legs than the Marvels, as superhero films are generally front loaded. However I didn't eXpect this to outgross a Marvel movie in 2023, especially a MCU film.

The Marvels continues to be a disaster, when compared to other movies, either previous Marvel/DC movies or just movies that came out this month.
 
BOSS easily takes the weekend with an estimated $41m for 5 days which would be about $97.6m total after its second weekend.

I thought this was ok.
I really liked the first 2 books and movies. But didn't read the source material for this movie.

The performances were good (loved Viola Davis, no surprise), the game and the lead up were good, the games felt way more brutal this time around even with the lack of gore...

But I kinda didn't and still don't like the idea of Snow getting his origin explained. And like a lot of times seeing why a villain became completely evil was kinda just...lame.

Him becoming completely evil after getting his heart broken is just again lame. For such an evil villain to see that's why he ended up the way he was (he was more pragmatic and selfish than straight evil in the first 2 parts) because of a woman was ehhh

Also they really could've split this into 2 movies, which I know is ironic considering Mockingjay, but it really could've worked here. The whole "Part III" section could've been fleshed out into it's own movie and would've helped this one a lot. It was for sure the weakest part of the film, but not because it wasn't interesting. It was too rushed and just felt like an afterthought. A whole movie to flesh out the love story, the rebellion, etc. while helping the pacing of the first 2 parts would've been great

But the movie was cool. However, I don't think I'll go out of my way to watch it again

EDIT: I'm reading that the movie not having Snow's internal monologue like what's present in the book really lessened the movie

Yeah I didn't like how they wrapped up her story.
I don't mind ambiguity but it wasn't handled well.

From the whole cabin scene on, I could see what they were going for but don't think it was handled that well
 
I guess this having some success at the box office could pave the way for another spinoff or two. This isn't a franchise that should be milked but there is some potential for a couple more interesting stories to tell in that world at least. I'd rather they not continue Snow's story but I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel centered around Haymitch's Hunger Games or even one about how Panem came to exist after the fall of civilization.
 
Ideally, more movies focused on the games would be fun. The tournament itself is the main selling factor of these movies. But unfortunately without more books, I don't see this happeningm

It's been over a decade since I read the books but the part in Catching Fire that describes Haymitch's games really stuck out to me. I was disappointed that it wasn't included in the film but I can understand why, especially if there's a chance we could get a whole book and film dedicated to it.

I don't think they should make a new movie on their own without a book coming out first so it's ultimately Suzanne Collins's call. I agree that the games themselves are the main selling point. Their absence in Mockingjay is a big reason why that one was the weakest of the trilogy IMO. The only story I'd want to see in this universe that doesn't center around the games is the origin of how Panem came to be.
 
Solid Saturday at $11.1m. That would put it between $98m and $99m after Sunday.

 
Didn't the final person Haymitch was fighting, or even Haymitch himself have an eyeball hanging out at one point? That's what I remember from the chapter where they briefly touch on his games.

I suppose if she wanted to write more prequels she definitely could. Hopefully she just stops trying to shoehorn a Katniss mention in.
 
Weekend actuals are out and BOSS improved about 200k from estimates to $42.2m for the 5 day.

 
It's at ~$200M world wide. So... on its way to modest profitability. But nowhere near the original movies.
 
Super late to this one but I finally got around to seeing it and I really enjoyed it. The first two acts were great, and I really liked the performances from Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage and Jason Schwartzman who honestly stole the show the most IMO and had me laughing quite a bit.

I even enjoyed Viola Davis's scenery chewing in this as ridiculous as it was at times and I can definitely appreciate her commitment to the role, but I also would have liked a bit more nuance to her character.

If it wasn't for the rushed/unsatisfying third act this would have easily been my favorite film in the franchise so far, but that disappointing, ending really brought it down somewhat for me.

I still prefer CF as my favorite HG film, but this is easily my second favorite right now.
