Part 9-The Finale
That was the best night in living memory for me..i felt like the cloud was finally lifting......just needed to finish the deal tonight and it was over......The day passed over quickly..it's surprising how time flies when you got a beautiful woman in your apartment.....I set off for my meet with BadSuperman around 7:00
I'd only been sitting in the booth at Cmill's for about 10 minutes when he came in and sat down opposite me
BS:"Geeeeez hunter i figured you was smarter than this"
Hunter:"Sick of swimming in the dirt....thought I'd take my chance to get out"
BS:"It's your funeral"
Hunter:"You sure made sure JAL made his"
BS:"What makes you say that ?"
Hunter:"Oh come on that was clearly your handiwork"
BS:"Heh yeah...stupid bum went and died on me before i got the photo's just think if I'd made him talk from the first 8 punches me and you wouldn't be sitting here and you wouldn't be a dead man walking"
BS knew how to break the human body into a variety of pieces but his brain certainly wasn't his biggest muscle
Hunter:"Is that enough Cine ?"
Cine and a couple of his officers had been sitting in the booth behind us
Cine:"Yep we got enough...book him boys"
Cine's officers took BS away,he was yelling about killing me but i figured Mister J would be taking care of him before that..BS would never sell J out and would make some cover story as to why he killed JAL but he'd never give his boss up.....still Mister J most likely wouldn't take that chance..
I went back to my apartment and Kmack was waiting for me....it felt good
Kmack:"So is it over ?"
Hunter:"Not yet,i gotta take the pics to a meeting with Ock and then it's done.you go back to your place and get packed....we'll leave as soon as i get back"
She kissed me and then left.....only one more step to go and i was out of here for good....i put the photos into an envelope.....i kept two back
I went to Lobo's cafe and waited for Ock....he arrived with his aide and we did business
Ock:"Well i believe this completes our transaction"
Hunter:"It does...you have what you want and so do i"
Ock:"Indeed....well it's been a pleasure...and i'm a forgiving man.....much more so than Mister J"
he smiled at me as he got up and left....that same smile that he gave me in his study......the kind that made me feel cold
I hurried to pick Kmack up....we'd bought Cmill's car off him and were using that to travel out of this hellhole tonight.....i reached her apartment and the door was open.....my heart sank.i rushed in.....there she was lying on the bed....she looked angelic except for the blood stains on her dress...I breathed in deep....I had forgotten my own rule....no one gets out of this type of deal unscathed
There was a note lying next to her body...it read:
To walk into my associates home and think you could dictate terms was a mistake
This is your penance....keep what you know to yourself and learn from this or you will be next
Heh....i fought back the tears.......he thinks i value my life above Kmacks...that was his mistake
I leant down and closed her eyes.........i sat and watched her for a moment,she seemed peaceful....no more pain angel
I made the call to the police and Cine and his boys were here within 20 minutes....i wasn't a suspect this time
Cine:"I'm sorry Hunter....if there's anything i can do for you......"
Hunter:"There isn't"
Cine:"I understand"
I went back to my office as the apartment reminded me of Kmack,i could still smell her there
I took a bottle of whisky out of the draw and placed it on my desk,from the other draw i took out my gun and sat with it in my hand....she was dead because of me.....I'd let her help me when i knew it put her in danger....i should have listened to Cmill,I was out of my league and i took her with me....her death was on my conscience but her voice kept echoing in my mind
Kmack:"I'd rather try than just fade away into the background of this hole"
I'd made my decision.......an hour later and i arrived at the station...Cine was there......I gave him the 2 photo's.....my last will and testament if you like
I stepped out into the cold unforgiving night,pulled my collar up and lit one........i took a long drag
Hunter:"F**k em!"
the rain was lashing down but no matter how hard it rained it could never wash the pain away from this town and it would never wash the blood off my hands....I made my way back towards my office to await the reaper knocking at my door.....i reached into my pocket as i walked and felt my gun..........I wasn't getting out of this and i knew it but when i went i was gonna make sure that I wouldn't be meeting the devil alone when he welcomed me into hell
