So let's have us some Luther!

Who is Luther?
Luther is a brilliant but emotionally impulsive detective who is tormented by the dark side of humanity while hunting down murderers. Once the self-destructive detective knows the killer's identity, it becomes a psychological duel between predator and prey.

Bets on whether or not CC will finish this long, extensive show?

hush that noise. good spin Kane

Hopefully I can check out the first episode out before next week.

come thursday, i am off for 4-5 days so i plan to start this then

I watched the first three episodes this morning, and so far I'm liking it a lot. Idris Elba is a damn good actor. I can't say that enough. He's really doing some great work here. It's too bad Marvel is wasting him as Heimdall. He could have been a great N'Jadaka. The Luther character is one that really drives the show. What helps is that Elba's hair looks like a hedgehog, so you can tell homeboy has been going through a lot in his career.

There is one element of the show that I'm already getting sick of at the moment. This part of the show is getting in the way of some good detective work and episodic villains, and already I'm just hoping that it would end. You'll know it when you see it. At the same time I'm going to say that if DC ever decides to put Poison Ivy in a movie they've got the perfect person to play her.

My favorite part of the show though is when Luther sang "A House Is Not A Home" in that bar that one time. I didn't think they'd go there, but it was fantastic!

was he famous in the US before this show or after? i can't remember

I just finished the first season. There are some good things about the season overall, but I think the first three episodes were stronger than the last three. It felt a little bit like some things were forced, and some obvious questions weren't being asked by some of the characters.

im watching the first episode now. i forgot how strong his real accent is.

the first movie i saw Elba in was Daddy's Little Girls, and then The Losers

haha his gal is the Sand Snakes mama from Game of Thrones

The twins villains are my favourite villains on the show.

The gas station scene is terrifying.

I got a little late with starting it, and then had a bit of a time finding this thread. Im into season 3 now, I'm still really digging it. I agree teh twins were maybe the best villains yet and the second half of S1 was less than great. As E-Man said, some bits felt forced.

In Season 2
I kinda missed Alice
And seeing where
his relationship with Mark North had gone was nice. Hope to see him in 3.

Elba really is the best talent on this show I think. Though I feel like Indira Varma has the talent, but not the material to show it.

Indira is his wife right? i see her and can't unsee her from Game of Thrones lol

Yea, that's her. I havent seen her in much beside this and GOT, but remember her better in Luther.

Just finish the show and I kinda want to rewatch he first epiode, maybe the whole first season again just to be able to compare the first and last of the show.

I was thinking about it and I think that this isn't just a cop show,
its the end of a cop show. We're watching a man who's been green, and experienced and from the first episode this show was never intended to go much longer if at all than it did. Whenever Alice flirted or said something about him going away, it was always meant to happen. Like Luther was just putting it off until he knew his job was done and he could run away from where so much had happened and did happen between then and the end.

Indira Varma was great in Rome. I feel like every show I've seen her in since has kind of wasted her.

Looks like I'll be on an X-Files crash run right up 'til the new season premieres Jan. 24th, so I'll move on to this then. Thankfully it's short, so I think I'll still finish the season before the end of the month.

Idris Elba says he sees Luther as a superhero. Luther is sort of his Batman.

I've seen Indira Varma in plenty of stuff over the years. Most notably I remember her as Suzie on Doctor Who spin off show Torchwood and as Ilsa Pucci in Human Target.

I tried watching the first episode last night but I was way too tired and fell asleep. I'll try again this weekend.

I can see that in a way. He may not put on tights or special armor or have powers but he has that morality thing.

Hence why I knew that investigation could never pan out in the end. Even when it was close.

He even had his "uniform".

The first episode of season two was a good highlight of what I like and what little I dislike about the series. When he's investigating things this show is awesome. Seeing how Luther thinks and operates while finding murderers is the highlight of this show. What they also do a good job of doing is showing how human he is at the reaction to bad things happening. He doesn't do a witty one liner, or just steely stay calm. He is basically like, "NO! NO! Come on, don't do this!" That feels more real, and what's so great about Idris Elba is that he manages to do it without coming across as someone helpless and whiny.

The parts to drag the show down a little is his side "missions." The whole bit with helping out a friend and her daughter felt like it was getting in the way of everything else, and even in the end Luther himself [BLACKOUT]seemed to forget about picking her back up after an hour from their "safe house"[/BLACKOUT], so I was feeling like it was just tacked on just to give Luther something that might get him in trouble with the police department again.

The end of that episode was pretty good though. I wonder what's going to happen to Kane while he's still in that car. They already got rid of CC's character in storyline, so I don't want Toonth to off Kane this early.

And no I'm not spoiling anything with CC's character in this show. She just isn't in the show anymore for whatever reason after season one.

Idris Elba wrecked that door for real. He said he channelled some personal problems into that moment. No wonder he won a golden globe.

Season two had the best villains so far. The two people they were trying to stop were pretty interesting, and they worked well with the show because this show is pretty good at having the villains do all sorts of bad things before they're finally caught. It helps with the suspense. You know the good guys will win like in every story, but here the hope becomes that you wish that they don't kill any more people than they have been doing, so it adds tension.

The subplot with the mother and her daughter though did nothing for me, and they way it ended just highlighted it. If they must have some kind of side plot going that takes up Luther's time then I'd rather they go back to Poison Ivy.

The side subplots on Luther are usually pretty weak I feel.

So far I think the problem with them is that they don't add anything besides giving Luther something to do that puts him at odds with his occupation. The problem with that is that his usual detective work does that already, so the subplots in the first two seasons feel like tacked on stories that get in the way. Jessica Jones was sort of that way for me too. I loved it when she was investigating, but some of the side stuff felt unnecessary.

Him doing his job is definityly the best part of the show IMO.
