It's actually the new layer of protection that's been recently added to disc media. Scientists have lately discovered that a nice, think dip in maple syrup will make the disc nearly scratch-proof. Unconfirmed rumors say that this somehow also makes some discs unreadable in players and may attract ants, but who's to know for sure, right?
