Myself and a lot of people consider RDJ as the definitive Iron Man, but I want to test that claim. Is he really the only guy for the job or is it all hyperbole? I challenge you to try and Name one actor who could of been better.

Rules: The actor can be living or dead, retired, any ethnicity, gender, and sexuality etc.

My pick is Daniel Day Lewis(a safe choice I know).

Thing is... RDJ's Tony is his Tony so actually anyone else would not do the part just like him so...

But I think that there could have been many actors that could have done the role from the past and the present.

An early career Clint Eastwood.

A young Burt Reynolds actually could probably match RDJ's smart ass take.

Young Brando would probably done a hell of a job at Demon In A Bottle.

A young Jeff Goldblum would have made for a mix of intensity and geeky charm as Stark.

Late 70's and early 80's Harrison Ford would give us a quit wit with sincere overtones.

There's a reason he was up for the job before RDJ... Cruise would be a serious and intense Iron Man.

Clooney certainly would deliver a Stark that was suave but that you could also buy as incredibly brilliant in his younger days.

Those are just off the top of my head in terms of name actors in their prime that could give us a good Tony Stark that would be entertaining but not necessarily in the same wheelhouse as RDJ.

Personally, Deadpool not withstanding I think in a few years this guy would be a great replacement for RDJ:

Marvel is famous for getting the casting right. I thought Cap was their biggest challenge but they nailed that too. But replacing RDJ someday...yikes....that's gonna be tough to pull off.

I was amazed at how good Evans was/is as Cap. He's actually my favourite casting in the MCU.

As you say, RDJ has made the part his own, but I could definitely see Clooney or Reynolds as Stark.

There's never only one guy for a role, especially since you can do different takes on the same character. Whether people will accept a different Stark than RDJ at this point is a different matter though.

I didn't follow the fan buzz for the first Cap film but I can imagine there was plenty of people that went "why the hell are they getting the Human Torch from the terrible FF films?".

Nicolas Cage, and even Jim Carrey
I'd also go with a younger William Shatner

Those are good choices, especially the younger Burt Reynolds

Offhand, Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
I was going to say this.

Bottom left poster makes a pretty good case for Paul Newman.

Is this an empty post, or is there a gif invisible to me?

Timothy Olyphant from Deadwood and Justified was almost casted as Tony Stark.. and i think he would've been great in the role

Interesting choice. I wouldn't have thought of him but yeah I could see him in the role.

Olyphant might be a good choice in the near future.

There are a few actors mentioned above I could seeing doing well in the role

but as for "Being a better Iron Man than RDJ"?
Nope, it is just simply, scientifically, not possible

Well first, I love me some Justified, one of the best tv shows of all time ever, period......but I don't see Tim in this role.

Rather..........

I still stand by William Shatner could have been better.

"Scottie, suit me up"

Timothy Dalton certainly wouldn't have been as good with the humour as RDJ, but for the dashing, vulnerable playboy of the 60s comics, he'd have been perfect.

Agreed, not so humorous (although that's RDJ, Stark wasn't particularly humorous in the comics, was he?) but totally believable for the rest.
