I personally like it when he seems like all three. That's why I love the line "if I have to have a past, I prefer it be multiple choice!"

That way, the Joker can be just an average joe that had a lot of crap happen to him that made him bonkers. He could have been a dead beat guy who did a job for the mob that went wrong, or he could have been a sadistic hit man with a *****ed up brain already.

I like it when they tease you with a little of everything, because it makes for good discussion, and makes him intriguing.

I agree, IMO, its really what makes him who he is, not permawhite or any of that crap. Its the fact that he is pure evil personified, something Batman never accounted for when he began his mission to clean the streets of Gotham, a person with no past and no method to his madness, the bastard child birthed from Batman's presence. The yin to the yang if you will, that keeps the balance in....well,..balance :hoboj:

Indeed, if he was just "some guy" he'd be John Wayne Gacy (or should I say Pogo the clown:woot: ) and wouldn't be that interesting.

Whoa....Whoa! Whoa! Hold the god damn phone!

Are you saying that Gacy, the man that rape and murdered 33 boys and young men between 1972 and his arrest in 1978. Who buried them in a crawl space under the floor of his house and in nearby rivers. Who held in the Guinness Book of World Records the longest sentence imposed on a mass murderer; given 21 consecutive life sentences and 12 death sentences.

A man who had nine of his victims' so badly disfigured that they are still unidentified to this day? Who was in his double life an upstanding citizen, met famous people and had a horrifyingly bad family life that was a shock to all who knew him.

Who has one of the longest and unusual psychiatric reports, famous through American criminology next to Jack the Ripper and had numerous paintings being sold to such people as GG Allin and John Walters.

This man:

AH - you know how to use Wikipedia, eh?

I think Gwyn was trying to say that "just some guy" could also be incredibly evil and horrible. He probably knows who Gacy is :oldrazz:

AH - you know how to use Wikipedia, eh?

It is faster to copy and paste just to make sure I got all the facts right. Even so, I still double checked them to make sure it was not just some uploaded BS. I grew up with this stuff happening and I have books on this guy. He is THE ONE when it comes to serial killers.

Dismissing him as "boring" is a huge insult to the entire study of criminology! :cmad:

No one said "boring" as far as I know - they said he's "some guy" which, if you think about it, is quite astute considering what his acquaintances thought of him: just another average joe.

Of course, they were dead wrong (no pun intended)

EDIT: gwynplaine did say "not that interesting" now that I look :O

from what I heard Gacy wasn't that charismatic. I like my killers with some charm

I've heard that he was charismatic, he was a big deal in local politics, met the President's wife and turned himself into a big success story. I mean, the man must have had some charisma not only to reach that point but to lure more than 30 young men to his house.

Gacy only got caught when he ran out of room for bodies underneath his house and started stashing them in a park or somewhere. He ran out of room for bodies underneath his house. Yeah lots not talk about that sick fck shall we?

I was reffering to the Absolut Joker, 'joker is an absolute'. somewhere out there is a manip waiting to be born.....

you're right indeed, it can only be valid as a hypothetical question. I was feeling glib :O.

It's like saying "Is Batman really a demon creature of the night? Or is he merely a damaged man?" Of course he's both depending on your persepctive, but he can never both at once. In TDK I wanted Joker the Man, not Joker the incarnation of deathly chaos. Oh well. He got nice socks at least

Which if I recall, is the antonym for something that is "interesting".
Sorry, I prefer Charles Manson:woot: . Seriously, what I meant is that I wouldn't want the Joker to be just like Gacy or Dahmer or whatever because that's not IMO what he is about and even though he is wearing make up like Pogo I don't think that's what we'll get in TDK.
Notice how none of these serial killers have ever been mentionned as references, just Alex De Large and Sid Vicious which is fine with me:woot: .

What are we talking about here? John Gacy? Jeffrey Dahmer? Hannibal Lecter? Alex De Large? Jack The Ripper? Sweeney Todd? Mr. Magoo?

You know who I think should be used as inspiration......the character called "The Joker" from the comic books, or is that asking for too much? :wow:

I agree entirely. This is an intellectual property that has been with us for so long that a diverse range of new approaches could be taken, without mongrelising the influences.

The fantasy of serial killers is the charismatic charmer the reality is the loner or person who seems completely average but is insane on the inside. Hes right forget all these comparisos to known killers there is 50+ years of comic resources to use to create a good interpretation of the character.

LOL, my whole argument is not that the Joker should be like Gacy. Although Gacy and other individuals makes the idea of Joker an actual working reality (especially this incarnation) Joker is based on his comic book self and no one else....ok maybe a little bit on the "Man Who Laughs".

I was just reacting to the moron that said Gacy was not interesting. To me that is like saying Huricane Katrina was not a natural disaster.

I was just trying to say that if the Joker was just a Gacy wannabe onscreen it wouldn't be that interesting to me.
And I don't think calling me a moron was completely necessary.
