One of my favorite songs by Metallica is The Call of Ktulu, which is also one of the first songs I learned on bass. I love the S&M version of this song, but I have a quick (yet tough) question for those who know the song:
This video is the CD version (the DVD version blares the bass out a lot more), on which the instrument I'm trying to find the name of is easier to hear. I know the bassline of this song, and this instrument follows the bassline closely at one point in the song (starting at about 4.45 into the video.
Here's the video (I hate anime, but it uses the CD version):

I thought it was Jason's bass at first, but knowing the bassline and listening to the DVD version, it's pretty easy to tell it's not. It's a loud, thudding version of the bassline which- as I said- starts at 4.45 and can be heard clearly until the phrase is over (4.49). It's the loudest at 4.46.
For those of you that don't know the bassline, here is a video (you only really need to know the phrase beginning at 1.29 and ending at 1.43). This version has distortion, but you can get the basic sound of the bassline from it:

I'm curious to know what instrument is used to play the louder, more pounding version of the bassline (my girlfriend didn't know, and she's been doing music since... forever
). Any help would be appreciated.
