Iceland's Hidden Elves Delay Road Projects

Concerns over the "hidden folk" are central to Icelandic culture — according to a 2007 poll, 62 percent of Icelandic residents think it's at least possible that elves exist.

A program about geology on the Science Channel called How The Earth Works had an episode about Iceland's volcanoes. The geologist who co-hosts the show went to the site of a massive 18th Century eruption that covered a huge area of former farmland with lava. The Icelandic natives still believe that the area has been taken over by faeries, trolls and the like. One volcanic formation was named after the trolls whom folklore claims created it. It seems clear that a good number of Icelanders hold to traditional beliefs of their ancestors without irony.
