You can meet Chris Buchner (a.k.a. the hype’s own WOLVERINE25th) at the New York Comic Con, October 13-16, 2011.

Chris is the Editor and Publication Coordinator of the first two volumes of the graphic novel anthology, ICONIC. The ICONIC project challenged writers through the Comicbook Artist Guild (CAG) to take characters in the public domain and create new, imaginative stories for them. Chris also wrote the framing sequence for ICONIC’s first volume.

I’m making this thread because ICONIC 2 will contain my first ever publication, a short story called Bredbeddle: The Origin of the Green Knight. I had a blast writing this story and thought I’d preview the first three pages. Dave Johnson provided pencils, Mauro Flores & Alex Rivera were on toning duty, and Mindy Lopkin was the letterer.

So if you happen to be at the NYCC next month stop in CAG’s booth, talk with Chris, and feel free to support a couple longtime Hypsters. ICONIC 2 will also be available for purchase online sometime after NYCC, though Chris will have to update you on that at a later date.

We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Congrats on being published! Whether I hit the NYCC this year or not depends on how broke I am.

I used to bump into Chris more often when I bought my comics at GALAXY COMICS in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, but I don't since I rarely shop there anymore. The bus fare adds up.

ICONIC sounds interesting, playing with public domain characters. I occasionally have some ideas about those.

Thank you, and yeah, it was a lot of fun. I had a few ideas for various public domain characters but having recently listened to Sir Gawain & the Green Knight I was curious about his origin. I did some research and found that very little was written about him so I took the Sir Gawain story and wrote my plot around it. I'm eager to see what other writers came up with.

It was my first time ever scripting a comicbook and I loved it. I scripted a second story for CAG as well but that one, unfortunately, was for a project that has since been canceled. I'm hoping it'll see the light of day eventually though.

Sounds good.

I used to write fan-fiction way back in college but I haven't the time in years. I never managed to get the handle of script style as opposed to long prose style - which doesn't work for comics or film. It does work for verbose internet reviews. :)

I prefer prose as well (I do write novels for hobby after all) but I ended up enjoying comicbook scripting as well and I recently tried a movie scene script for Hype Survivor and had a blast at that as well.

I'm realizing that any form of writing and creativity is enjoyable for me.

Comic script writing isn't that complicated. The hardest part is just figuring out how to do good storytelling between the pages. Actually it's damned easy if you really put your mind to it, and is a gateway to screenwriting as well (as I recently discovered this past year).

I also used to write fanfiction (never liked that term, BTW) from 2000-2005. Almost turned one of those projects into an honest comic book until it all fell apart. If I had the connections then I do today, who knows, I might've been the one working on IDW's Ghostbusters series. Ah, the what ifs of it all.

Wow, those are some really impressive pages. Congratulations, and best of luck to you.

We have a lot of impressive art in the book. We even attracted a former Marvel artist! Hopefully this finds its way into school libraries. That's the ultimate goal, to get kids into reading and reading comics.

Oh? Who's that?

Henry Martinez. He's worked on several Midnight Sons books and a couple Malibu titles.

Wow, that's awesome! Very cool stuff. Good for you guys.

Gail Simone did a story for one of our volumes, and Sterling Gates will be, too. It's really cool to have your work show up in the same place as a comic pro. :woot:

And what stuff would that be, Marc?

Are you asking what those creators did for us? Gail did a short story for The Gathering #2, Glenn Greenberg had a story in issue #4, and Sterling Gates has multiple stories on the way, the first of which will be in #6.

Oh sorry, I meant what kind of stuff do you come out with? What projects, organization, or company or whatever do you work with?

Oh, I'm sorry! I'm working with a company called Grayhaven Comics. I really don't want to derail the thread, but we have a megathread here, so check that out, or drop me a PM.

Iconic 2 will be available at small press booth 2940 all throughout NYCC.

If I come across it, I'll try to pick one up while I'm there on Saturday.

Seems like I will be attending the NYCC after all on Friday, 10/14. I'll try to catch you dudes there!

Well, you're in luck...I'll be at the table all but four hours on Friday.
