I'd love to see a live-action adaptation of Peter S Beagle's The Last Unicorn

I loved the animated movie since i was a kid and i read the book as a teenager as it was a damned good book and always dreamed of a live-action adaptation.

My ideal cast:
Joel Moore (Avatar and Grandma's Boy) as Schmedrick.
Glen Close as Molly Grue.
Danny Devito or Jonathan Rhys Myers as Captain Cully.
Kane Hodder (a.k.a. Jason Voorhees) or Ron Perlman as Ruhk.
Linda Hunt as Mommy Fortuna.
Patrick Stewart, Robert Englund or Ian Mckellen as King Haggard.
The girl who played Luna Lovegod from Harry Potter or Emily Browning as Lady Amalthea.
Cate Blancett as Unicorn's voice.
Robbie Coltran or Jim Cumming's as Cat's voice.

And for director is Guillermo Del Toro with James Cameron and Peter S. Beagle as producers with MGM/Columbia as production. Peter Yates of Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince/Deathly Hallows 1 & 2 can be director.

Effects by WETA and Rick Baker.

Good cast, Hordak. I would suggest that Glenn Close may be a little too old for Molly Grue, as I was under the impression that she was supposed to be a woman in her 40s (at most) who's lived a hard life, as opposed to someone who's almost 60. I can see Jennifer Ehle, Diane Lane or Rose Byrne in such a role: yes, these women are beautiful, but they can be "roughed up" a bit by the makeup and costume department to fit the role.

I would also not use a separate voice for the Unicorn and Lady Amalthea. At the risk of sounding sexist though, the actresses you suggest for Amalthea may not be pretty enough for the role. My reading of Amalthea is that your jaw is supposed to hit the floor when you first see her. I think Sarah Gadon could fit the bill there.

Diane Lane would work for Molly and good suggestion for Amalthea, Amalthea has always been one of my top animated babes since i was a kid.

What do you think of Robert Englund as Haggard? Freddy Krueger would be good.

And how about James McAvory as Lir?

I prefer your other suggestions of Stewart or McKellan as Haggard. Englund sans Freddie makeup isn't intimidating enough. Charles Dance of course, though it's kind of typecasting him as an imperious medieval lord.

I like McAvoy, but I don't think he's hunky enough to be Lir. Henry Cavill of course comes to mind there.

Before we get into the cast (even if a movie seems unlikely now) I'd want to know who the director and writer were. I'm sure the usual suspects would come up like Jackson or Del Toro, but I am not sure either would tackle such a story so similar to other material that they are well known for (though the idea of a Del Toro designed Harpy or Red Bull is mouth watering). I've never read the book but the Rankin-Bass film is a touchstone of my childhood with the America soundtrack. It was both whimsical, romantic and yet also had an adult melancholy to it. It's really not quite a kids movie with it's imagery and characters.

Any ideas on whom you all would like to helm a theoretical LAST UNICORN film?

Hey Krypton, i always adored TLU since i was a kid as it was one of my childhood faves with Star Wars Trilogy, Dark Crystal, NIMH, Ghostbusters and so much more. I also had a crush on lady Amalthea as i thought she was hot :hubba.

Do you think Peter Yates of Harry Potters 6 and 7 fame could be good to direct? he did a good job on those final installments to HP. And do you think Del Toro would make a good executive producer for it as well as James Cameron? i think Cameron who is known in action and sci-fi with one drama should at least step into fantasy realm as producer of the film since he did worked on a fantasy movie known as Avatar.

And do you think WETA with Rick Baker would be good at the effects?

Henry Civil could be a good Lir besides Mcavory.

Funny, Beagle is currently touring Canada with a print of TLU where it is shown at Cineplex theaters with a Q & A with beagle after the showing.
I'm still ticked off they advertised it so poorly, by the time I heard about it it had already played in Vancouver and moved on.
From that era of animation I'd definitely like to see TLU and Watership Down on the big screen.

Yup and hundreds of bronies and pegasisters showed up to see it.

Even NIMH would make a good live-action adaptation.
