The Dark Knight Rises IESB Exclusive: Third BATMAN Film in Script Stage

Ooooh, interesting. Nolan usually relied on those with the comic knowledge to create the script, while he designed the basic structure. I wonder if this is an indication of a film that relies less on the mythos?

No, on TDK he and David Goyer set up the story and then shipped it off to Jonah to write the actual screenplay. Then Jonah and Chris sent the script back and forth for edits.

Chris being the only "screenwriter" listed doesn't mean that he's shut Goyer out (Goyer is listed for TDK under story, not screenplay), and maybe Jonah is still going over his schedule to see if he can do it. Chris isn't a shabby writer himself, so it wouldn't be the worst news in the world...

But maybe it's all semantics. :oldrazz:

Jett mentions that Goyer and Jonah have been signed on for Batman 3 since last fall. It says that guild members are required to submit their working list. Are Goyer and Jonah members of WGA? Here's the whole quote from Jett:

According to three separate BOF sources, director Christopher Nolan’s recent deal with Warner Bros. for the film INCEPTION, at least includes an agreement between the studio and the acclaimed director to helm his second sequel to BATMAN BEGINS.

BOF was told last Fall that two of the Batman writing trio -- David Goyer and Jonah Nolan -- had already inked deals with Warner Bros. for a third BATMAN. At the time, it was believed that Chris Nolan had not signed on for BATMAN 3 but was “close” to doing so.

Recent reports online certain seem to jibe with this as industry scuttlebutt says that the script for BATMAN 3 is already being written (BOF via IESB.NET - 1-30-09). BOF has been told by several movie biz folks that Goyer, Jonah Nolan, and Chris Nolan have come up with a story/treatment and it is now in the hands of J-Nol for the first screenwriting pass -- very similar to what occurred for THE DARK KNIGHT.

Again, this appears to be inline with what even Chris Nolan himself has said. During the TDK BD Live event in December, the director said that he and Goyer had been “musing” and acknowledged that there was a story there that they wanted to tell (BOF - 12/19/08).

No official announcement of Nolan’s involvement with a third BATMAN was made with last week’s INCEPTION press release, and BOF does not expect one any time soon. I will say that the timeline for BATMAN 3 looks to bee very similar to that of THE DARK KNIGHT and the announcement for TDK came in July of 2006 on the eve of Comic Con in San Diego

I still would take this report with a grain of salt -- albeit a very small one. Until it's officially announced in the trades that Chris has signed on for BATMAN 3, all bets are off.

Well that sort of contradicts what IGN wrote, so I'm confused.

I dream every night that Nolan makes his third bat-picture!!!! Not that TDK really needs a sequel, but that being said I have never WANTED a sequel this much before!

It's exciting to think that if part 3 follows the pattern of TDK, we could get an announcement as soon as July of this year! It'll be here before you know it, with us following the filming and such next year, and hopefully virals again! We have so much to look forward too!! :)

I wasn't trying to debate or stir up any trouble or anything. I just think certain creators would perhaps rightly feel a bit "betrayed" by their studios/powers that be in such a scenario. Like if EON Productions told Daniel Craig they were going to make a Bond-Bourne team-up picture inbetween Quantum of Solace and the next Craig-007 entry -and- that someone else was going to play Bond in it. I can imagine him responding with "Bwhaah?!?" and "You hired me to play Bond, so let me play Bond." Then maybe another, softer "Bwaah?"

Yeah, yeah....

I do see your point.

However, Bond has been played pretty consistently over the years, so i think it would make less sense to have silmuntaneous different actors/movies.

But as i was saying, w/ Batman, there is no single vision.

And if WB wants a JL movie, then so be it.

It they want a Nolan Batman 3, and 2 years later a DKR adaptation, then so be it.

Who is Nolan? Who is Bale? It's likely that 5 years from now , they wont any longer even be associated with the franchise.

Why is this being brought up again?

Millers stupid JLA film would have got in the way of what Nolan is doing and that would have been pure stupidity on WB's part. Now is not the time for unecessary JLA film. Maybe 4-5 years down the road.....but not now.

Yes. I agree with you. The JL film that was being proposed was pure crap

That was not my main point though.

My main point was that Nolan and Bale arent the be all, end of of Batman, and should not assume they call all the shots for the franchise.

It's not like they're going to be around forever.

I disagree. It's too early to have a Ras return. We just explored him one movie ago and now we're going to retread it all over again?

I would like to see the films come full-circle, and a Ras or Talia inclusion might work, but for something like that to happen, I want the movie to have a feel of "finality" to it. Batman only just started, remember? As Joker says "a year ago" was when The Batman came to town. We can't have his epic final confrontation yet. he needs to fight a lot more villains.
And if the movie series is a trilogy, id rather Talia or Ras not return, for reasons I just mentioned.

I dont think this series is merely a trilogy...

Let's face it, they'll be going for years and years and films and films....

What i was getting at is, if Nolan himself does indeed only do three films himself, the next film being HIS last, i would prefer him to return Ras, w/ Talia in tow, and end his storyline that way.

It would lend a continum to his 3 film set.

After that, when a new director comes in for the fourth film, and so on, new villians can come in : Catwoman, Riddler, ClayFace, Poison Ivy, ect. Joker and Scarecrow could also make returns down the road, in the new director's films.

I know some people only want a 3 Nolan film series, and then a complete conclusion after that. but people have to realize that's not very likely...

Also, though i personally am a big supporter for the return of Joker, Two-Face, i dont think either will return as soon as Batman 3.

My first choice (personally) would be: Ras al Ghul, Talia, and maybe another secondary villian.

My second choice for villians: Black Mask, Catwoman, the return of Two-Face.

Joker simply wont return by the next film, no way, no how, simply the death of Ledger was so traumatic Nolan wont recast the role. (though initial plans were for Ledger to return as Joker for part 3)

So with WB officially announcing that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 will be released on July 15 2011, I think we can pretty much rule out BB3 for a 2011 release. I would imagine WB would want to keep a July release date for the next Batman film, considering they had so much success with this one. Plus, it was announced not too long ago that the sequel for Terminator: Salvation is scheduled for a 2011 release and I don't see two Bale movies coming out so close together.

So it's looking like 2012.

Holiday Season 2011 - maybe even Christmas, with Holiday as the villain!

Yeah. No way WB will release this during the holiday season. They will stick with it as their summer event tentpole.

yeah 2012 is fine, they could have Batman3 in the summer and The Hobbit 2 during the holidays. and would give Bale enough time to grow his hair/ take a break. last thing anyone wants is him going berserk on Wally Pfister ;)

Batman 3 is coming, there's no stopping it... This franchise is just too good not to build on. But Nolan has his job cut out for him. If he can make a third picture which is just as good as TDK than I'll die happy (actually that's what I thought right after seeing TDK opening night!). TDK was more than amazing... Absolutely pure spun gold! A true masterpiece, instant classic, you name it.

It was a freaken insult that this film wasn't nominated for best picture, and Nolan sure as hell deserved a nomination for best director! How in the world can a movie like Return of the King get nominated for best picture - AND WIN! But TDK wasn't even nominated!??? I'm sorry, but TDK is ten times the movie Return of the King ever was. I like LOTR, but TDK had so much more to say! A much MUCH more powerful movie in comparison. **** the Oscars!!!

Anyway, I can't wait to hear more about the next batman flick - ANYTHING about it will get my heart racing!

I am also someone ruling BB3 out of 2011... with Inception being a major summer tentpole... I don't see how Nolan will fit it in. If Inception was a small spring movie with little CGI then I can see it. A space epic hard core sci fi flick will take too much time...

I just wonder what happens to Superman... will it go Holiday 2011 with Hobbit? I mean I would think they'll need a month at least between those two tentpoles... meaning one would go Thanksgiving. But a Thaksgiving release would be pushing it for Supes and ever LOTR. If BB3 goes 2012 we may not see the next Superman film until 2013 if it even happens.

I cannot see Talia working without Ra's. You take out such a great part of her and Bruce's relationship without the presence of her father.

No Ra's, and you get a little girl playing revenge for daddy. No thanks.

Although I could see her working without Ra's, you kind of gave me an idea...

What if Nolan brought back Ra's, and gave no explanation as to how he returned? Obviously, Batman and the other characters would try to find out how, but Nolan leaves it open-ended?

Sounds shaky at first, but think about the mystery and suspense it could build.

There is still room for improvement. Fight scenes can still be edited and cut better and I think Lee Smith can still do better job of editing. I would like to see him use more fade techniques instead of just cuts.

The next film can be more dramatic and emotional as well.

Fades cost more than straight cuts, but I suppose that really isn't a huge factor of why they aren't using them. :funny:

I think the fight scenes were edited fine. They needed to be staged better, though. The geography was tremendously unclear.

lol geography...

but yea i know what u mean, sometimes i had no idea where batman was located in relation to swat, hostages, and goons.
