Exclusive Video Interview: Malin Ackerman on Watchmen and The Silk Spectre!
Written by Rachel Howard
Friday, 28 September 2007
Updated with Video! The IESB sat down with Malin Ackerman and a group of journalists to talk about her latest film The Heartbreak Kid. More on HBK later, we needed to get the skinny on Malin and her role as the Silk Spectre in Zack Snyder's Watchmen!

Here's what she had to say,

Q: You have starting filming on Watchmen, can you talk a little about that, what it’s like on set, maybe your costuming a little bit?

MALIN: They haven’t started. . . They started filming this week, But I’ve just… I’ve been fight training.

Q: Fight training? What’s that like?

MALIN: It’s amazing! I…

Q: Are you good?

MALIN: I feel like I can take on anybody. Umm, which, I don’t know is a good thing, because I really can’t.

Q: Are you excited about the role at all?

MALIN: Oh oh, I am so excited. I mean, this is… You know I didn’t know anything about The Watchmen before I went and read for it, I had read the script, and loved the script, but went in and when I got the part I read the novel and realized what a phenomenal thing this was to be part of. And went to Comic-Con and saw all the fans and it just… It’s become sort of surreal that… And it’s great because this is such an opposite from The Heartbreak Kid. You know, it’s nice to do something that’s, yeah, something that’s not comedy, and Peter and Bobby [Farrelly] have always been, they are like uncles to me, they are like family now, and it’s just, you know, giving me advice, they’ve always said, you know, do something that’s not comedy. It’s just, trying to pull it off.

Q: So you haven’t been on set yet?

MALIN: Haven’t been on set.

Q: Good luck with the fight training!

MALIN: Thank you!

The IESB was also able to talk to Malin during the premiere of the Heartbreak Kid and she talked a bit more on Zack Snyder's the Watchmen. You can click on the link below for that interview. Special thanks to Ron Jacobson.

I love how she is so full of energy and enthusiasm :yay:

SHH's mainpage has an interview with her that pretty much confirms that the groups are called the watchmen and the new watchmen. which is pretty disappointing to me.

in the article on superherohype's newspage which asks her if she's been approached by fans. lol! people don't get it! Watchmen isn't really a mainstream comic. I think it'll do well for its story, but i doubt it'll make money like a common blockbuster or even as much as 300 did.

yeah i doubt it will make as much as 300. not even close. but if they sell it as a serious drama, i think it will bring in an older crowd. and if it's actually true to the comic, and comes across as serious and dramatic as the comic does, then i think it will get good reviews and be well-received. let's hope it's good.

That's my interpretation too.

Ugh.

Hopefully she's just using the term "Watchmen" loosely. Having the teams named The Watchmen and The New Watchmen ruins a whole lot.

I appreciate her enthusiasm, but she really sounds like she's either really dumb or doesn't get Watchmen. Or both.

That's what I'm gathering. But it's a fair trade, since she looks good and is open to nudity.

So, what's Snyder's excuse then? :cwink:

well, wasn't it sam hamm's that moore said is as close as someone will get to adapting it? and didn't that one have the watchmen and the new watchmen?

and yes, she does seem dumb. and she calls the movie "the watchmen." i hope it isn't called "the watchmen." it's watchmen. and obviously anyone who reads the book finds this essential since there is no group called "the watchmen." BUT if there is in the movie, then the movie may end up being called "the watchmen." i don't know. this whole thing worries me. but i'm still hoping for an enjoyable movie out of the whole thing.

I think you guys are being a little harsh. In no way did she come off as dumb (unless you consider being blonde and sexy dumb). Sure she said "The Watchmen" and "The previous Watchmen". Hopefully that was just a mistake (made by Alex Tse in his horrible draft). I'm not saying she totally understands every nuance in Watchmen, but there's no need to call her dumb and assume she has no understanding of Watchmen just because she didn't give an oral book report about it.

1). The movie's definitely called WATCHMEN. Just WATCHMEN.

2). But it might feature The Watchmen and The New Watchmen, if leaked scripts are any indication. Or not. The production's keeping conspicuously tight-lipped at the mo'.

3). Moore said nothing of the sort with regard to Sam Hamm's effort, which is nothing short of an abomination and we'll have no more mention made of it thank you very much.

Moore did pass comment upon one of David Hayter's drafts one time with a Close as I can imagine anyone getting remark, which is largely misconstrued as being an official seal of approval which clearly it wasn't. In his typically sardonic way, Moore's comment is akin to his saying that licking their own balls is about as close as he could imagine dogs getting to unlocking the secrets of quantum physics.

And Ms Akerman can give me oral anytime she pleases.

well yeah, i knew he said that about one of the scripts though. i didn't mean he approved of it, but that he basically said that's as good as it's gonna get in his opinion.

i don't think she's dumb just based on all these watchmen interviews. and it's not just her knowledge of watchmen that makes me think she isn't that bright. it's just the way she says things. also, she has a big forehead. just throwin that out there. i hope they give her a wig that takes care of that.

and another thing. it seems like we're allowed to be a lot more mean in this board because _noir_ is more laid back and the others don't check this out so much since it's basically a ghost town.

To be fair, a lot of people refer to the characters in Watchmen as "The Watchmen". Yes, even people on this board. It's an easy slip to make, especially if you've only read it once or twice (Akerman probably didn't read it before she was offered the role). I mean, you have "Who Watches the Watchmen?" plastered everywhere, and it is the title. The names "Minutemen" and "Crimebusters" aren't necessarily going to stick in a reader's mind as well as "Watchmen".

Even so, Akerman might not even be saying "The Watchmen" as a substitute for "Crimebusters" or anything; people who say that tend to mean "the leading characters in the graphic series known as Watchmen". Eh, it's a stretch, but I'm optimistic.

yes. you are optimistic. everyone is pessimistic for the most part, when it comes to a watchmen movie. i mean, i'll admit i occassionally say "the watchmen" but that's in reference to the title. i never call the crimebusters of the minutemen the watchmen. but yeah, she may have just made a mistake. it doesn't matter. there is no way to pass judgment on this until we see costumes and a trailer. and even then, we probably won't have that good of an idea of how faithful they were.

For the record, I've read the comics multiple times but still call it The Watchmen. Rolls off the tongue easier.

And I don't get the impression shes very bright but I have optimism

she's not a bad actress. so as long as she plays it well, she could be ******ed for all i care.

:csad: :csad: :csad:

It really removes the political power from the phrase's reference to "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"

Costumes and a trailer are importnat, but until I see the shooting script and an ending that isn't an easy answer wrapped in a nice clean showdown, I will remain pessimistic. I really think this is a movie that can be pulled off, the kind of movie that can show the others what they should be striving to achieve, but if they end it the way every script has ended, if they disrupt the intellectual and moral core of the story because they can't trust an audience to be intelligent and grapple with ambiguity, then **** em, I'll boycott.

actually, if they are gonna call the groups the watchmen and the new watchmen, I'd prefer that the graffiti just be the straight up Latin "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?"

yeah. that would work. although, the comedian talks about the graffiti during the riots. but yeah, if the groups are called the watchmen, it does lose its political meaning and takes on a very straightforward and literal meaning. i don't know about this movie. i'll be there first day whether veidt lives or dies, whether minutemen or watchmen and whether alien or something else destroys new york, but i'm going to be a very harsh critic.

Wow. YOu guys are tough. "the" Watchmen movie will hopefully be awesome. I think Malin is extremely hot. Her and Carla Gugino are the reason I'm paying full price.:woot:

Unfortunately I think they're going to be called Watchmen and New Watchmen.

Why? Because a bunch of halfwits at the studio probably went "derrr, why is it called Watchmen? There's no Watchmen in the whole story. I don't get it"

The studio got it, I'm sure. They all have lit majors stuffed up their asses and hung like moose heads from their walls. They just have a great deal of contempt for the well read common man. The well read common man did not work his ass off, pay thousands of dollars, and suck the ***** of many a decrepit old white man to get his literature degree, he just went to the library. This pisses the suits off, and so they take it out on the well read common man by making ****ty movies that talk down to him as though he were a two year old on the SPED fast track.
