Thats right ladies and gents, I'm going to ask my girlfriend to marry me. We have been best friends for three years and about 6 months ago we fell in love (after secretly liking eachother for the same amount of time). We both really love eachother and both her and I have expressed our desire to marry, so theres no "dont count your chickens before they hatch" issue.

I have a ring, well, around thanksgiving I will. My grandmother wants to give me her engagement ring. All I really have to do is talk to her dad. I know he likes me (i'm the "wish come true" for her family after a series of really ****ty boyfriends) and my girlfriend has talked to him about her wanting to marry me, to which he told her that if I wanted to marry her, I'd better learn "i wish i were in the land of dixie" on my guitar first.

I'm going over to her house this weekend. I know the song (incase he wasnt joking) and want to ask him for his permission (i'm old fashioned like that). Question is, what do I say? How do I say it? How do I even bring it up?

read my post again. we already want to get married. Giving her the ring just maes it offical. In fact a few weeks ago we were talking about it and I made a comment concerning us not being engaged due to a lack of a ring and she was hurt saying she already considered us engaged, ring or no ring.

We both were afraid the other didnt have the same feelings and that it might ruin a wonderful friendship. And we're together now with plans to marry and start a family...so that makes me a ***** how?
