I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

Doctor Strange is so aggressively mid. Which is expected since it's a Scott Derrickson movie. That guy is poster boy of floundering neat ideas. It has some decent moments here and there, particularly the Dormammu scene, but the rest is forgettable. Waste of a really good cast, a good theme by Giacchino, and a very compelling origin story.

See the big cat on the right? That's what you all look like when you pick on Doctor Strange. :o

Kidding aside, I've always thought it was simply okay. Not bad but nothing close to a Top 10 MCU contender or anything. There are some fun visuals and character moments in it but it's basically Iron Man meets Harry Potter. I rank Multiverse of Madness a little higher. I really do like both of the Doctor Strange movies and Cumberbatch is a strong lead in both but neither of them made me think that they were top tier for Marvel. Which is funny considering Strange isn't too far from the top on my list of favorite MCU characters.

I cannot forgive a movie that wastes Rachel McAdams like that. Thank god she was only in that one, and nothing else. I couldn't bear to see her waste again in that even worse sequel.

Good point I was too harsh - it has ONE remarkable quality in Giacchino’s score.

I, for one, like Doctor Strange :funny: My issues with it are that Scott Derrickson wasn't allowed to do anything particularly playful with it beyond a very specific MCU template, and the comedy rewrite and reshoots that were tacked on by Feige. The jokes don't work at all. I do think it's more visually interesting than a huge chunk of the franchise, and I'm naturally more into the mystical side of Marvel. I also love Tilda Swinton in the film and I think she brings a lot to the role, as controversial as that casting decision was. Derrickson wanted to go weirder and darker with the sequel, but he was axed, unfortunately.

Doctor Strange is near bottom-tier MCU, and an egregious waste of an amazing cast. Even the visuals were weirdly bland. It has not a single remarkable quality imo.
It's a movie I want to love. Strange is a favorite and the cast is full of actors I love. But most of it not all are wasted and they figured out a way to make me feel gross on seeing Swinton.

Wasn't she also in Multiverse Of Madness?

One thing that cracks me up about Doctor Strange is that the post-credits scene with Mordo breaking bad and crippling Benjamin Bratt has yet to be addressed. I liked seeing Chiwetel Ejiofor again in MoM but that was a completely different Mordo. It took the MCU less time to circle back around to the giant Celestial sticking out of the Earth. :o

Pretty sure in one draft of MOM, the opening scene is Mordo attacking Wanda and her killing him.
