I'm Not Messing Around, I'm Doing Important Stuff in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I recant my previous statement, after FF, there are three movies I’m looking forward to: BP3, FF2 AND Dr Strange 3.

Because I need to know more about this incursion and if they fixed it:

Oh yes, I was thinking about the earlier suggested slates, and I was feeling a bit uninspired by the selection, but I would definitely enjoy a new Doctor Strange film. That's my corner of the MCU. X-Men would be the crown of it all, hypothetically, but as of right now, I'm expecting Disney to sanitize it to high heavens, and that scares me.

Among MCU films, X-Men is what I care most about, and then Blade and Shang-Chi. I'd say Yelena Belova / New Avengers if I thought they'd do anything I care about there.

I doubt we are getting Thor 5…. I expect him to bite the bullet one of the next avengers movies

Rumors indicate it is still in development.

Who would Marvel hire that would fit the X-Men better? I'm not saying it's going to work out. But let's not act like Marvel Studios hasn't been Marvel Studios since inception.
Wild choice here: I would’ve asked Michael B Jordan. His Creed 3 direction was excellent. He’s very creative behind the camera.

There’s also Ava Duvernay or even Antoine Fuqua. All high quality directors who could helm a project that has civil rights in its DNA.

I like the way you think.

I wouldn't have hired Jordan simply for the fact that Creed III is one thing and X-Men is another. That's still his only directing credit, right? I think Jordan Peele was the guy IMO

I would've wanted a female director for X-Men. Gina Prince-Bythewood. Dee Rees. Hell, the Wachowskis. Lulu Wang or Celine Song. Céline Sciamma. Something wild and interesting. Most of the directors mentioned lack the kind of mid-budget stepping stone Ryan Coogler had with Creed and probably the interest in working in a blockbuster space, but man can be unrealistic and dream.

I would personally give Chloé Zhao or Nia DaCosta a second chance (even though I didn't like The Marvels), but I'm probably in the most miniscule of minorities with that.

Would Marvel hire any of them to direct a movie?

Ava Duvernay is definitely not my cup of tea either.

Ava DuVernay isn't a bad pick. She has directed a few well-liked mid-budget films and had an interest in working in the CBM space. She directed one (bad) blockbuster film that bombed, but that is experience nevertheless, and her follow-up to that was again well-liked. If only Hollywood were interested in giving black women as many chances as it gives to white men.

This is such a weird sentiment to me. What about her career suggest she'd be good at anything like X-Men? Her civil rights take are super libby. She isn't out here making Judas and the Black Messiah. If you want to hire someone who is just going to do what Feige wants, why does their gender or race matter?

So nothing to do with movies but...it's my birthday today and my girlfriend of 15 years (yes I know lol) and I decided to go get our marriage license this morning.

No big deal or anything :o :oldrazz:

For X-Men, I'll take the director of Selma and When They See Us (also co-writer) over the director of Thunderbolts. Also, the ideal would be to have someone with a mutually respectful relationship with Feige, much like Coogler. I'm certainly not advocating for a stooge. You might also note that DuVernay wasn't on my original list of directors, but in my book she's a perfect compromise. She has clout, experience, a point of view, and a good resume.

X-Men shouldn't be liberal. They're the X-Men. Where Malcolm X not only has a point, he's right. But if the argument is they should be, they already hired a middle aged white guy who proved he can do one of these movies.

I found Thunderbolts far more emotionally affecting then anything DuVernay has done. And her experience and resume are not good for X-Men. Proven by her one attempt at trying something like it.

The X-Men we're seemingly getting isn't political at all. I'll take a softer, populist liberal take any day. Blockbuster filmmaking is the game of compromises, and I'd rather have someone outspokenly political in the mix. Who's your dream pick for X-Men director?

There is a difference between being outspoken and having strong politics. If you're specifically picking a black artist, why not Shaka King, Regina King, or Cord Jefferson? Those that don't play to the establishment That's what makes Coogler stand out. He doesn't do that. He actually writes Killmonger. I shudder at the idea of DuVernay's Magneto.

I don't have a "dream" X-Men director. But I'd most likely prefer someone from the LGBTQIA+ community, as the general vibe of the group has fit that struggle over the last 40ish year. So give me Emma Seligman. They already proved they can handle a bunch of crazy kids in a school with an annoying jock as the #1 student, while keeping the human aspect at it's core.

Denzel Washington's Magneto goes into a machine to rejuvenate himself and John David Washington pops out. I'm just saying. :o
