Are there any series nowadays that has a retelling of the X-Men story? I'm also looking for something is fairly early in its life cycle, so I can read it in sequential order. Does Astonishing X-Men fit the bill? How many issues are there in this series? And what's it about?

I'm confused, do you JUST want the retelling of old stories? As for Astonishing, it's pretty damn good. I'm certainly no expert on X-men, but I always find it enjoyable. Definately get the hardcover that recently came out. Also, if you want reprints of the old stuff, get some of the Essential trades.

How much do those cost? And what is Astonishing about? Who's in it?

Astonishing stars Cyclops,Emma Frost,Wolverine,Colossus, and Kitty Pryde. They're currently at #14 but the past 12 issues are available in trades if you want them collected.

I personally found the series overrated, but then again I'm not a big X-Men fan.If you're an X-Men fan then definitely check it out, alot of the fans tend to really love it.

hey Galactus, glad to hear you've decided to pick the hobby back up again. Lemme just encourage you to not limit yourself only to X-Men (I assume you're back in because of X3?). There's dozens, hundreds of amazing comics out there that are much better than anything with a mutant in it. We have an Official Recommendations Thread here that can show you what some of the other cool things out there are.

I agree with the others in this thread that Astonishing X-Men is easily the best X-Men series in recent memory. There's 14 issues out currently, but you'll probably find it easiest to buy the trade paperback, the collected edition, which will give you several issues and the complete story (most comics nowadays are told across several issues and not just one). You'll also have a tough time finding #1, so this is the cheap and easy alternative. Here's the book on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/07...f=pd_bbs_2/104-5096254-4511113?_encoding=UTF8
(this is an oversized hardcover version containing issue #1-12. It's a major bargain as it's half the price of what those issues would have cost you off the stands)

I've always been fond of the X-Men, which is why I plan to get mostly X-Men comics for the time being. I plan to venture into different series eventually, but with a college budget, I just want to stick to one series for the moment. Plus, I'm going back and reading my older comics. By the way, does anyone know a site, where it gives you a list of different series out at the moment? I guess kinda like a guide like Wizard, but without the price values? It's been a good 5 or 6 years since I bought a comic, and yes, the recent superhero films have sparked my childhood hobby again.

Anyways, thanks for the help

You're college age? Then you NEED, needneedneed to discover Vertigo comics

Eli knows his stuff, anything he suggests is great:up:

The big event for Marvel this summer is Civil War. It will have pretty much all the Marvel super heroes that are active, and you can bet the main ones will be important. A lot of people have been talking about it and it will change the Marvel Universe as we know it. I suggest picking that up.

A new registration bill has surfaced which has forced the heroes to chose sides. Close bonds have been broken, old rivalries have ben reformed...

To start off, a group of the brightest people in Marvel meet once in a while to discuss events and issues that arise. They consist of Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Dr. Strange, Blackbolt, Charles Xavier, and Ironman. Hulk leveled Vegas which caused panic. The Illuminati voted Hulk to be sent away, except Namor. Namor got mad and started arguing. Ironman told him to cool it, and Namor attacked him. They started fighting Ironman. Dr. Strange used his powers to hold Namor. Namor then said "Banner will come back from whence you send him, and he will KILL YOU ALL!". Hulk was indeed sent away in a satellite he was sent to to help fix (Hulk sometimes has control and sometimes doesn't). He was sent to another planet where another event is placed (Planet Hulk).

The group met again to discuss another issue. The Super hero registration act. The government has put a bill on the floor of the Unisted States congress. Anyone with powers or a costume must register their powers and identity to the government. If you don't, it will be considered a federal crime. People have to chose dies. Ironman has chose Pro-Registration, Captain America has chosen Anti-Registration.

You might like Y:The Last Man if you decide on Vertigo comics.

if he's an X-Man fan, I'd probably steer him more towards Fables, PReacher, or Transmet. They're the Vertigo books with the highest sheer entertainment value

Thanks a lot. I'm going to try and look for a local comic store, since the other one closed. Anyways, I'm going to take your recommendations in mind when I go shopping for some new stuff.

Galact - you'll find you can always get comics for cheaper online, especially the trades.

if you wanna find an LCS (local comic store) try looking on www.the-master-list.com

You should also check out X-Men Deadly Genesis, its a miniseries that just recently came out written by Ed Brubaker.

And when you're ready to get into other series... Captain America, Daredevil, Marvel Team Up, Runaways, Ultimate Spider-Man, The Ultimates, She-Hulk, and I'd really suggest Moon Knight, it's awesome.

When it comes to DC. Boy, if you're into DC at all it's a REALLY good time to jump on any of their characters right now. With the current "One Year Later" storyline going on most of the big time DC characters are all going back to basics, and it's good jumping on for any readers.

I'd highly reccommend Superman/Action Comics. Great stuff. And I hated Superman until this...so, that's saying a lot.
Batman is awesome.
And The Flash is rebooting at # 1. So that'd be a perfect jumping on point. This comes out in June.

Just get Astonishing X-Men, its the best out and its all the lovable charcters you've grown to love.:)

hey, i just started reading marvel comic yesterday
i got Civil War, captain america, Iron Man and Astonishing X-Men.
i loved them all and wanted peoples advise about some other titles.

first question, are there any X-men titles that have Gambit at all?
What other X-men title should i consider getting? or should i just get Wolverines solo series?
Is She-Hulk any good? if so would #8 be a good starting point?
and lastly what's the best avengers title? and is it worth picking up?
cheers

Wolveirne 42 -47 is civil war stroy and has started off great, must have..
Wolverine Origins is good and I think will end up turning into a fantastic series
stick with Astonishing X-Men it hasn't let me down yet...
Gambit makes appearances in X-Men, but is now a horseman of Apocalypse

I went today to the closest comic store I could find, but they were closed on Sundays and Mondays, so I am going on Tuesday. Anyways I decided to go get X-Factor, Astonishing X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, and Civil War.

so Gambit in X-Men isn't anything to get excited about :( damn, he's my fav character.
i was thinking about getting Wolverine because of teh civil War tie and, and see where that arc takes me. thanks for the info.

and whoever is just starting to read marvel, you have to get Civil War, abit confusing but Captain America is now my fav hero from just one issue, great story.
is sensational the best spidey title around at the moment?
not a big fan of his character, i need something that is truely amazing straight away to get me hooked.

So will they be having Civil War: X-Men, Avengers, and Frontlines? If so, it's just basically the same concept, but concentrated on a certain group, am I correct?
