I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

There's definite room to modify the design for whenever Joker appears properly seeing as all we saw of him was out of focus and a closeup of his mouth. I think the "really bad case of acne" mouth will be here to stay, but everything else can be refined and tweaked
Adding to this, even though I doubt it'll change THAT THAT much, I actually REALLY hope they keep the overbite teeth. They pull the whole design together for me.

The design choices they've made are way too meticulous and specific for them to drastically change the design like that.

Even if they do tweak it, I suspect the general DNA of the design will remain the same i.e. short messy hair, lopsided permanent smile, the general "diseased" look he has about him.

Ha! I was wondering when you’d show up.

Yeah, it’s just a hope that they pull back a bit, because they sort of refined Penguin’s look as well. It’s mostly the mouth and patchy hair if I’m being honest here.

penguin looks exact the same. if there are differences (considering it now takes them less time to apply the make-up), they are unnoticable

I do think it’s a little different for this Joker, though.

Penguin was actually clearly seen in the movie. The clearest look we’ve gotten at the Joker is in a scene that got cut, and even that was somewhat distorted.

I don’t think that what we’ll get will be hugely different, but I do think there’s a fair bit of wiggle room to make some changes.

I’m not sure if anyone else thought of this, but something hit me today. Riddler used Renewal as a riddle that no one seemed to catch on to. We know that when Riddler announced his presence to Gotham that he said he would kill until “the day of judgment”. Though that was only part of his warning. In his journal, Riddler says:

My life has been a cruel riddle I could not solve, suffocating my mind, no escape. But then today, I saw it, a single word sitting on this ledger sitting on the desk beside me -- "Renewal"

The flood was not only his retribution, but to “renew” Gotham. To hit the reset button on the system. Unmasking the corruption was not enough. Corruption was everywhere. Gotham was a cesspool. So, Riddler played god to purge the city and drown the rats. The Real Change. Renewal was the broken promise sold to him, so renewal would be the promise that he would deliver.

No Barry Joker haters are ever able to escape me.

As for what you've said.....I have to assume they'll give him a liiittle more hair, but I feel like the patchy hair is going to be a defining physical characteristic of this particular Joker.

As for the mouth, I think the lumps will be dialed back a bit but still present, and I could kinda see them making the "smiling" side of his mouth resemble an actual smile more, with the upturned corners if that is indeed what they end up doing.

And this is why people saying that the flood is out of place or came out of nowhere is crazy to me. It's all there, it's just also a little allegorical and not entirely spelled out as a literal flood within his motivations.

Right. Though, this is what makes Riddler so genius. He always hides his true intentions in plain sight. He leads you on a trail of riddles that are easy to solve, but they sometimes contain a double and even triple meaning that leads you away from his grand plan. I’ll admit, I also got lost in trying to see if there was a clue about the flood, but no one stopped to ask him what “judgement day” was either. This is why he succeeded.

Sofia said that two other doctors came in the wake of her first… Strange? Jeremiah Arkham?

Could have also totally been Jonathan Crane, I suppose.

But damn, this episode did Arkham Asylum justice. Really hope we get more of it in due time!

The Arkham stuff disappointingly just felt like a Gotham episode for the most part, at least when it came to the other inmates. Everything else was great though; Colin and Cristin especially just keep knocking it out of the ****ing park with each episode.

There were some very interesting reveals in this episode that I was not expecting. I love how this saga is being constructed. The current head of Arkham could be a very interesting reveal if Matt wants to play with that idea.

I noticed that Selena’s mom wasn’t named as a victim of The Hangman. This has me curious as to what really happened. Falcone certainly has more blood on his hands. This is definitely why Catwoman could use her own series.

Also, who the hell is Dr. Rush actually? There’s something very sneaky about him.

Watching this episode makes me a little sad that we won't have the Arkham series for this universe.

The Arkham stuff was the first thing in the Reeves world I’ve actively disliked. Thought it was really tacky and made me enormously grateful the Arkham show isn’t happening. Like an unfun edgy episode of Gotham directed by M. Night Shyamlan at his grossest.

With the success of this, they could definitely end up doing the Arkham stuff, or whatever, if Reeves wants to.

But the filmmaking and editing of the Arkham stint did leave a bit to be desired. This episode was at it's best before and after those moments.

It was meant to be this claustrophobic concussion of memories flooding to Sofia, but the truncated montage edit of it made it lose some impact imo. It was fine, but maybe some of the weaker stuff from the show so far. The show overall has had some problems with allowing things to breathe at times imo, but it's few and far between.

And the other two inmates they focused on were effective enough, but were very on the nose in their performance and purpose. The shorter haired one was particularly sad though, both being clear guinea pigs.

There’s just a particular way of writing, filming and performing mentally unwell people like cartoonish gibbering monkeys that I feel like we should maybe Stop Doing. Even in something inherently silly like this show, it just felt tacky and tasteless.

The question is, are we gonna meet the current Head of Arkham at some point?
If it’s NOT Hugo strange then I’ll start to by into the Lauren Lefranc and Reeves are ashamed of the comic books stuff

It’s such an obvious inclusion and the build up is fantastic. Too much so to waste on some subversive nonsense like “oh it’s just… Henry Porter. New character made up for the show”

The Penguin series is so good that it has enhanced The Batman movie franchise. I know the studio makes its big money off of the big screen movies but a great show can be a filler until the next movie comes out. I see now what the MCU was trying to do with their Disney + series. For once DC let Marvel be the canary in the coal mine and they learned from Marvel’s mistakes.

Would you mind expanding on that a bit? The only two inmates we really saw besides Sofia was Magpie and the unnamed female patient, and I didn't think either of them were particularly outlandish in their presentation. Magpie was perhaps a bit more theatrical and "showy" than she needed to be, but still. The unnamed patient felt rather authentic to me, but I'll concede I have next to no first-hand experience with violent, criminally insane persons.

Makes sense seeing as
Selina's Mom was actually ruled as a murder due to strangulation rather than a hanging. Maybe Maria Kyle was the "first", then to make cover ups easier Carmine started making it look like they all took their own lives
