I'm Reading Your Stuff: General News and Discussion Thread

Why are we speaking like getting Scarlett Johannsen isn't a huge get?

I feel like its 2009 in the Iron Man 2 forums.

We've had a decade of her in the Marvel movies and blockbusters, so we've taken her for granted as a known name. Its why I am surprised she would have any interest in doing this.

Maybe she really liked the script and wanted to do it.

Matt said it himself. He grew up on '66 and putting those four in a film together was his homage to what made him a Batman fan, so...

Taking what you typed at face value, and putting aside that you offered no citations, this suggests that he was influenced by '66 in general, not the '66 film specifically.

Which is what I was talking about. The '66 film. "So"...

Welp, Netflix is buying WB and HBO. I wonder how this will change things. Will James Gunn still be in charge? I am assuming The Batman Part 2 will be filming by the time the government approved the sale.

I think Netflix is really good for Reeves but bad for Gunn. Way more likely to not care at all about connecting universe. They are going to greenlight all of reeves tv shows he wants.

Probably see random stuff like batman beyond show or superman red son. Bunch of one offs.
Doubt it, but I would love for you to be right! Death to shared universes! Return to the grab bag!

Shared universes create the opportunity to tell more stories (why should we have to pick between having crossover movies or solo movies focusing on one character, when we can have both?), with a fully living and breathing superhero universe with decades of comics to adapt.

Why limit the stories you can tell by separating every character into their own universe?

If anything I feel like shared universes are a mess of having to accommodate someone else's creative decisions whilst having to stick to "A Formula" for the sake of maximizing as much audience interest as possible because change on that scale is risky.

It's the opposite of the opportunity to tell more stories because if the audience latches onto some kind of tonal decision then that's what the studios are gonna chase for ages, regardless of its actual quality. Making certain projects separate allows for bolder decisions without adhering to some list of guidelines.

Better Netflix than the Ellisons, but I’d still prefer this wasn’t happening. All the consolidation is just too much. In ten years time, there will only be one mega-studio. Not great.

Yup. In the short term I’m glad that it’s not the Ellisons, but long-term this is another domino falling in an overall bad trend for the health of the industry.

Sounds like Ellison is already angling to fight this on antitrust grounds with the help of his goons in DC, but I think given the international components of the deal it’s gonna be hard to stop the momentum. Similar to what happened with the Microsoft/Activision merger.

The irony of the current administration actually being technically correct to oppose this merger, but for all the wrong/corrupt reasons...

But for now I guess we can take some small solace in the nepo-tech bro-wannabe studio exec not getting his way.

I don't really put much trust in those claims tbh.

"Theatrical release" can also mean it's out in theaters for one week (or weekend), then on streaming the next. You'd hope they wouldn't be that stupid but. The more cynical part of me thinks I wouldn't put it past them to intentionally sabotage theatrical that way and then be like "welp it's just not working".

Edit: Yup. Lol

My DC blurays just got way more valuable. :o
The physical media side of this is my biggest concern. Criterion has done some for Netflix movies before, but hardly all of them. And Netflix now controls DC Comics, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. The thought of not being able to physically own media for my favorite IPs makes me sick.

It's interesting that Netflix even wanted WB which is a traditional studio and it seemed against the traditional studio model. Still will be lots of time before an agreement is made and government approvals are given.
