Nine teenagers face 81 charges after at least five victims were beaten with a steel meat tenderizer and robbed for their iPods and cellphones within two hours early this morning.

Police arrested three females and six males between the ages of 16 and 18 years old after reports of robberies and violent assaults.

"This is appalling," said Det. Const. Chris Chilvers, who is investigating the case.

"I don't know how else you would describe it."

Between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 12:15 a.m. Saturday, the youths swarmed at least four victims in the 14 Division neighbourhood. The group wanted money, cellphones and electronics.

Three victims were sent to hospital with serious injuries to their heads and faces after they were beaten with a meat tenderizer resembling a hammer. One victim received 30 stitches and 10 staples to his head and face.

Police said one victim was 18 years old. The other four were between the ages of 26 and 48.

Just before 1 a.m. Saturday, police caught and arrested the suspects in nearby Davenport Rd. where passerby called in reporting a brutally beaten and robbed victim. Another victim fled the scene after he was robbed.

Of the five robberies, three of the victims were alone.

The attacks appear to be random and unprovoked, Staff Sgt. Courtney Chambers said.
