The Godfather has fallen to the #3 spot, after nearly a decade at the top of the Internet Movie Database’s listing of the Top 250 Movies of All Time. As we reported a couple weeks ago, The Dark Knight overtook The Godfather’s throne, but this latest development is really interesting because it might show evidence of a fanboy mob at work. Could it be that Dark Knight fans are intentionally voting down Godfather in hopes of keeping The Dark Knight at the top spot? Why else would The Shawshank Redemption have overtaken The Godfather in a time when neither film is in the public forefront? The percentage of users who gave Godfather a 1 out of 10 (the lowest rating possible) grew from 6.1% to 6.4%, just enough to push Shawshank ahead, while the percentage of participating users who loved the film, giving it a 10 out of 10, remained the same (57%). It’s also worth noting that while any IMDb user can vote and effect a movie’s overall rating, only regular IMDb users can influence the film’s top 250 placement.
Thanks to /Film reader Kevin P for the tip.

Doesn't this mean that they wold have to open multiple IMDB accounts to vote many times?

Only regular voter's votes count. So if you only vote for the Dark Knight then it won't be counted towards the Top 250.

It makes me just a little bit sad that this has happened to The Godfather D: A movie I cherish alot. It's not that I dislike TDK but just voting for the sake of pushing another movie down is kinda silly and pathetic :\

Well I'm definetly not going to lose any sleep over it :) Just saying it's silly if people vote on something just to push it down.

My comment wasn't directed at you or anyone here. It was directed at all those people who are going crazy over where TDK or Godfather ranks on imdb's list.

who really cares about polls on the internet or polls in general

We don't need 'The Dark Knight' to be No.1 on IMDB to know that it is a great movie... do we?

No one will let a comic book movie stay on top for very long anyway.

The Godfather had an unfortunate accident. It's tragic, but life goes on. [cue music: 'Speak softly, Love']

I followed a little bit of this situation on the iMDB boards. Only a little bit, mind - I can only take such idiocy in small doses.

Apparently, after "The Dark Knight" toppled "The Godfather" from the number 1 spot, this incited torrents of hatred towards TDK on "The Godfather" forums. So, a bunch of the "Godfather" fans banded together to start a focused 1/10 campaign against "The Dark Knight" in order to restore things to "the way they should be." Part of why the average score of "The Dark Knight" has steadily dropped from 9.7/10 to, I believe, 9.3/10. This was accompanied by an influx of trolling on the TDK boards, from regulars on the Godfather boards. Bashing the film, bashing the fans, etc. Gloating that they'd ensure "The Dark Knight" wasn't #1 for long.

Evidently, they didn't count on the backlash of the "Dark Knight" fans voting 1/10 for "The Godfather" in retaliation.

This all sounds hilarious.

That is hilariously sad.

I don't know how you can visit the IMDB boards. The biggest collection of morons inhabit that place. Troll central right there.

My god, I thought i met net idiocy in it's purest form yesterday but this takes the cake, my god what a bunch of losers, I didn't even know the Godfather had a forum, does everything have one ?

I think the funniest part is how all of this nonsense relies on the ridiculous assertion that somehow the IMDB rating actually mean something.

:whatever: I thought the whole thing was a lot of fun a week ago, but apparently their "click the stars to rate the movie!" system is serious business. :funny:

Funniest thing I've heard of in a while. Oh man lol.

People can make anything serious business. It's what they do.

these days there are forums for just about anything lol its pretty sad.

Why shouldnt the Godfather have a forum though? it is one of the great film trilogys in the history of the medium TDK is a really good movie but it isnt on the same level as godfather or shawshack redemption no comic book movie will probably ever be in my view.
