Iron Man In The Middle: The "I'm just not sure about this movie yet" Thread

There's two different types of A-list casts.

Batman & Robin had big name stars, but not "respected" actors. Arnold can't act and George Clooney was just a pretty face at that point. Then what else did they have? Uma Thurman, Chris O'Donnell and Alicia Silverstone? Come on.

Catwoman had Halle Berry and Sharon Stone, and both of them had been involved in steaming piles of crap movies before.

The second type of A-list cast is real, respected, good actors. People with Oscars and Oscar nominations. Robert Downey Jr, Gwenyth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges, and Terrence Howard are not huge stars. They are not box office draws. They are all, however, Academy Award nominees. There is absolutely no denying that this cast has more in common with the Batman Begins cast than with the Catwoman or Batman & Robin cast.

This is a good point... but its tricky... they are going for a fun summer blockbuster or are they going for something more serious that will appeal to all audiences... either its the perfect mix for somthing brilliant... or the perfect mix for disaster... but clearly... based on casting alone... you see the differences between this and Marvel's predecesors...

Ghostrider had Cage and Mendez (A name to fill the seats and some fine booty on the side)

Dare Devil and Affleck and Garner (A pretty boy with his soon to be new girlfriend J. Garner... who was on teenage boy's "top ten celebs to **** list" at the time)

F4 had Alba toplining it as Sue Storm... and it was Fox... nuff said.

There is a difference here... it can't be as bad as those films were...

I figured it like this..

Marvel has done a terrific job of bringing the worst of all the comic books films to light recently whether it's 'No, really take us seriously' films like Daredevil or Ghost Rider or pure MTV pop crap like the Fantastic Four films...some of them just haven't been getting it right.

When I watch the Iron Man trailers I kind of get that feeling that this movie could turn out to be like DD or GR..something that tries really hard to be seen as a good comic book film but just turns out to be pretty piss poor. I'm still really looking forward to the movie (not nearly as much as The Dark Knight) and since Robert Downy Jr. is such a badass..I know he'll be perfect in the role of Tony Stark.

In retrospect, I've got a feeling I'm really going to enjoy this film...but for the rest of the world..that has yet to be seen.

I expect this movie to be right next to DD on quality level.
Aimed for fans, with a lot of winks and comic book moments, but poor as a movie.

Favreu is a fan, we all know that, so, i wasn´t surprissed when the suit came out looking like it does and so on.
And there will be plenty of great moments for the fans in the movie, but it all comes down to if Favreu can pull it off, and how intelligent of a fan he is.
So far, i just can´t imagine him pulling it off as a director.
The intelligent part is something to be seen, but from the trailer, it doesn´t give me that vibe.

By "intelligent fan" i mean one that actually understands the characters and care for them, not just the action, and the suit and whatnot.
There are tons of "dumb fans" out there, more than i could possible imagine (many are in this same forums)...he can very well be just one more.

Couldn't have said it better.

I'll chime in, and say I'm also not sure about this movie yet. Not because I've seen anything that makes it look bad, but rather because I've learned from other Marvel movies that trailers looking good, the director claiming to be a fan, and so on... rarely seems to be enough.
I had hope for Fantastic Four, and it turned out being a real disappointment. Then FF2 looked like an improvement, and I actually ended up liking it less than the first...

Exactly. Both B&R and Catwoman had celebrities, not really actors (I know Halle had won Oscar but most of the movies she did afterward were crap). IM, however, has actors who are not huge BO draws, and have proved themselves with Academy awards/nominees. It's like what Singer did with X-Men, and Raimi did with Spider-man. I've seen the trailer and I like how Starks was portrayed as a self-serving millionaire, who after his capture and escape, had a change and redeemed himself. It's a journey for Starks to become a superhero, and I think the movie will succeed both in drama and action dept.

I know they've said they're trying to ground it in reality, but I just don't see it from the trailer. It has that colorful "popped off the pages of the comic" look to it, and the dialogue seems a little too campy. And the fact that they're resorting to using motion capture CGI to create Iron Man(for god knows what reason) makes me think it's just gonna be one big CG fest by the end.

All in all, I see this film being more in line with Spider-Man than Batman Begins. The problem, however (as others have said), is that Iron Man doesn't have mass public appeal or even recognition. I think Favreau is overestimating this thing, really. Especially with the talk of a three picture deal. The general public just doesn't have enough interest in Iron Man to care. Now maybe if he makes the first film really unique and special(like what Nolan did with Begins) it would spark interest, but if it just turns out to be a run-of-the-mill summer superhero action flick, it's not gonna happen.

Is the "popped off the comicbook" look a bad thing? Do you think the overtly fantasy element (if that is the direction they've went) will be a huge turn-off for general audiences?

Same here. I love Iron Man, but i'm kinda cowaring in a corner until I see the movie. I don't want to go on a nitpicky rampage, but just certain things about this movie give me a nervous feeling. The length is less than 2 hours, the trailers acting(like the one who started this thread said) makes it look like this movies just 'in for kicks' and won't take itself much seriously, ect. I'm still watching this movie opening night, though...

I get a DD vibe from this thing too. My main concern is the music. I don't want some dumb pop song to play in between scenes. I want a a classic score like Batman or Spider-man. Part of what I hated about DD was the music was so bad. Let's have a Cypress Hill song to introduce the Irish character. Let's have gangsta rap to introduce a black character. Let's have a rap/metal song for the character who's really angry. It just doesn't make the movie feel epic, but more like a tv movie of the week. So here's hoping IM avoids that pitfall, although judging from the trailer and its use of MySpace jokes and Ozzy's Iron Man song, it doesn't look like it will have a timeless feel to it.

Iron man looks like your run of the mill Hollywood blockbuster, but one of the better ones. Which still doesn't mean it's going to be anything amazing.

I think for something innovative and interesting in terms of CB films next year, we should look to Hellboy 2.

I think IM will be a very strong film. But I can't help but just feel more excited for the sequels with the alcoholism storyline and the rise of the Mandarin.

I still honestly dont know about this one, everything looks great so far, but it still could all go very wrong.

Ramin Djawadi is going to score this movie.

300 has Nine Inch Nails in thier trailer but never got used in the actual movie, Spider-Man had the lead singer from Nickelback doing the main "Hero" song, but that hardly got any playtime in the actual movie, I doubt Favreau's going to leave the Ozzy song throughout the movie.

I agree. That has been my main concern as well; that it wont be accessible enough to the non-fans.
