Latino Review got a chance to ask 2012 director Roland Emmerich if there's still a chance we'll see a sequel to 1996's Independence Day at some point. After all, the blockbuster made a massive $817.4 million at the worldwide box office that year. Emmerich gave an interesting response...

Dean Devlin and I are still set to make a sequel likely because we've found some sort of idea and we approached FOX and FOX has not quite figured out how to incorporate Dean's and my deal, and Will's (Smith) deal. Will wants to do it in some sort of a package they can live with. So it's just been in negations now since forever, and naturally FOX says "Why don't you do it without Will Smith?" I said Will is essential for us, for this movie and actually for the audience too. And, so, it's in limbo and lately the studios are fighting. Like gross players, and Will is a gross player and is probably the only gross player right now who's worth his gross. So we'll see what happens. I would love to do it..

Emmerich is on an incredibly long losing streak when it comes to his directorial films. ID4 was his last good one, imo. So I'm split on whether I'd like to see this. On one hand this could be a great sequel (lots of possibilities) and the film to snap Roland back to his "good" days, on the other hand this could easily turn out to be a disaster and adds one more tick to his failures.

I'd go see it. Im not particularly proud of that, but I'd see it.

If there's anymore sequels to Will Smith movies I would like it's Men In Black 3 and Bad Boys 3. They're long overdue.

I would like to see MIB3 as well...please no ID2:o

Are they really?

They are.

Funny, we're watching Independence Day in school right now....it is a great movie. Shows how far Emmy has fallen. :(

Figured Emmerich would stoop to this level. After the epic joke that was 10,000 BC, and yet another natural disaster movie in 2012, Roland has long worn thin. He may as well try to ressurect an almost fifteen year old successful film. I mean what are they gonna do? Invasion number 2? The guy is so lost for ideas and can no longer make a competent film it seems.

I read the script for the upcoming Independence Day Sequel that has been in development hell for years. Here's a break down of the film.

first, the movie is called Columbus Day, or CDM for short.. (M Stands for Monday)

15 years later, a bunch more, even bigger, WHITE, space ships show up. They are the same Aliens, just a different group of them. The first ones, were the PC based Aliens, really easy to take care of with a typical virus. These new "White" ships, are Mac based. The older Aliens we took out, were more of a corporate style Aliens, where as the Mac based Aliens that are invading us now, are more laid back.

With all the main landmarks destroyed, these ships hover over spots like "Graceland", "Disney Land", and the "NFL Hall of Fame".

Will Smith and Jeff Goldblums characters show up, and when they try to infect these new ships with the computer virus from the first film, it doesn't work. Besides being Mac based, these Aliens are smarter, and purchased a $100 version of from Wal-Mart with a 20 mail in rebate

Later there's a huge sky battle, where the Aliens fly multicolored spaceships (think ipod colors).

The aliens are kicking our butts, but, Jeff Goldblum has a new idea, a better idea. He knows that these Alien ships, while nice to look at, and better made then the older ones they took out, their batteries will die and be unable to be recharged after a few years, so the humans hide out at Heavy Metal concerts since these hippster Aliens hate metal music.

two years pass, and most of the Alien ships are not working anymore due to crap batteriesbut, they can't get anymore because they are so damn expensive, nearly twice that as the PC based ships in the first film.

The aliens surrender, then Bill Pulmans character makes a cameo, he offers all the Aliens a chance to come to peace with the humans. So, at the end of the movie, we see that all the Aliens now own and operate coffee shops and vinyl record stores. I also think one or two go to work at LA Ink.

Bill Pulmans Speach at the end to the whole world

Good morning. In less than an hour, these Aliens from space will join others from around the world. And they will be launching the largest corporate takeover in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests, coffee and music. Perhaps it's fate that today is Columbus Day, and that together, us and the Aliens will be taking advantage of unsuspecting natives... Not by using tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but by taking their money. We are fighting for our right to make a better living for ourselves, no matter who we step on. For Money!!!. And should we bankrupt the world, Columbus Day will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world bailed us out in one voice: "We will not go pennyless into the night!" We will not stop living beyound our means! We're going to charge on, with Credit Cards! We're going to buy that Shamwow! Today we celebrate our Columbus Day!!!

Pfft, we've evolved to iPod's, iMacs and iPhones now... the aliens wouldn't stand a chance...

no, the aliens evolved to that... but they can't afford to make repairs on them because they spent all their money switching to macs.... **** ain't cheap...

I had an idea it was a Mac virus that took down the mothership in the first one... yes?

Our mastery of Mac systems has stepped up another notch. They wouldn't have a hope in hell...

Say what you will...I'd see it in a heartbeat As long as Goldblum and Smith are back.

So this is what? project #5,000 that Will Smith has been attached to?

This is just unnecessary. It's really getting sickening at this point.

I have looked at the ideas for the sequel called ID4EVER, Independence Day Forever. These are from around 2001 or so with a suspected release date in October 2002.

Scientists uncover that the original ships sent out a distress signal just before they were destroyed. They figure it will take at least five years before any reinforcements can arrive to Earth.

In the meantime, a united mankind begins to reverse engineer alien technology and update their own current technology to prepare for a coming attack.

The only characters expected to return are President Whitmore, who continues to deteriorate from the psychic attack he endured. Russell Casse, the drunken pilot; his son becomes a pilot in the newly created hybrid air force.

Eventually larger ships arrive five years later on schedule, and launch not, another aerial attack, but a full scale ground invasion with millions of aliens invading every country across the Earth at once.

All of this happens within the first hour too!

it's only natural that 'they'd' come back.

This is one of the few movies I'd like to see a sequel for. The first one is the escapist entertainment at its best. But has one of the worst stripper scenes of all time.

They make it, I'll watch it. I've always enjoyed the first one as a fun flick. Though I'm not surprised one damn bit that FOX would want to move on without Will Smith. Just make a new alien invasion movie with new characters and slap the 'Independence Day' brand on it to sell tickets. God I hate that studio sometimes.

Why does this need to happen? The first was this great spectacle of entertainment and then it happens again? All it will look like id redundancy.

Maybe they could adapt the plot from the "To Serve Mankind" episode from the Twilgiht Zone. Something like that. Not exactly.
