Variety talked to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, who says that Lucasfilm is getting out of the movie business. "We don't want to make movies. We're about to get into television. As far as Lucasfilm is concerned, we've moved away from the feature film thing, because it's too expensive and it's too risky. I think the secret to the future is quantity. Because that's where it's going to end up."

Having said that, Lucasfilm's exit from feature films is not instant or absolute. Indiana Jones 4 is still in development. "Steve (Spielberg) and I are still working away, trying to come up with something we're happy with. Hopefully in a short time we will come to an agreement. Or something," Lucas said.

He is also working on a film about the Tuskegee airmen of World War II called Red Tails. "I've been working on that for about 15 years," he said, adding he's also been working on "Indy 4" for 15 years.

And Lucas Animation does plan to start making feature films -- eventually. "Right now we're doing television, which looks great. I'm very very happy with it," he said of his animation division. "And out of doing the animation, we're getting the skill set and the people and putting the studio in place so we can do a feature. But it's probably going to be another year before we have the people and the systems in place to do a feature film."

Lucas calls himself "semi-retired" but reiterated his plans to direct, "small movies, esoteric in nature," after his other projects are launched. He expects to serve as executive producer on the two features and the TV shows, including the live-action "Star Wars" series.

In related news, the trade also reported that Joe Johnston will return to direct Jurassic Park 4, written by The Departed screenwriter William Monahan. Johnston helmed the third installment of the franchise.

Will Indy 4 ever get made before Sean Connery passes away. I mean come on george you have had 15 years to come up with a new story.

GL needs to get some writers to write it.There are alot of talented people who could do an amazing job.We could of had more Indy movies if he would of done that.

Just get a move on already, Lucas. He's a drama queen...officially. IJ4 should have had a script and shooting date by now.

I'm beginning to doubt Indy 4 will happen.

These movies will never happen.

I hope they never happen, because they would suck if they did.

No offense to Joe Johnson (I love Rocketeer), but he's kind of a, "If we can't get anyone else....." director. Jurassic Park III was competent, safe, professional job. You know what I mean? Technically impressive. No-one asked for their money back.

I'm gonna go ahead and predict that Indy will be made. Like Die Hard 4. We'll get some announcement and then a month later it'll already begin shooting.

It'll happen in the blink of an eye

Yawn, If JP4 ever does happen I'll wait for the DVD.

My interest for "Jurassic Park III" has been re-ignited now that William Monahan (writer of "Kingdom of Heaven" and "The Departed") is tackling the screenplay for JPIV.

Ok...

Joe Johnston directed JPIV is bad news for me. JPIII was crap. Oh well, I'll still see it anyway.

George Lucas is still working on JPIV after 15 years.
Harrison and (especially) Sean are only getting younger by the second. :whatever: :whatever:

No, that's a common misconception.

Lucas didn't WANT to do Indy IV. He never did, and he's only doing in now begrudgingly for his two pals. Spielberg and Ford also were finished after the third movie - The Last Crusade has two meanings.

It's only as Ford has seen his star power diminish that he's gone back to his classic franchise that he stated previously he was finished with - see Arnie/Terminator 3, Sharon Stone/Basic Instinct and Sylvester Stallone/Rocky/Rambo.

Excellent post. You're absolutely right.

I agree. "The Rocketeer" is in my top 5 favorite comic book movies. But then the task of having to succeed Sir Steven in handling one of his film properties seems destined to breed ill consequences whatever the cause (ex: the "Jaws" sequels). So I tend to cut Johnston more slack mainly because of that.

Is it just me, or are they just reporting the same news over and over again, but touching it up with a bottle of white out?

This article is pretty interesting. I do see a new JP happening.

Yeh Jurassic Park 4 will be ard pressed to top Peter Jackson King Kong Three T-Rex Kong battle and all the creatures on that skull island part of teh movie.

Yeah, at least when it comes to Indiana Jones it feels like George Lucas have said the same stuff over and over again for ages now. When they actually start filming it, then I might start belive it's actually coming... ;)
