Playstation Insomniac's Spider-Man 2

Like always, IGN is the odd one out with 8/10. Never forget, they gave alien isolation a 5/10.
Gamespot also gave this an 8. Eurogamer uses a 5-star rating system and they gave a 4 so, mathematically, it's also an 8 outta 10.

"Despite its open world falling short"...we're getting Queens and Brooklyn. Despite what the MCU would have people believe, Spidey doesn't leave New York much, traditionally. Hell, I can't even remember a time when he went to Staten Island. :o The map seems fine to me, the only significant omission is Roosevelt Island but that's far from a dealbreaker. A Spider-Man game doesn't need to have a Witcher 3 or Red Dead Redemption II sized map.

91 on both MC and OC so far.

I was expecting high 80s so this a step beyond. Seriously hyped!!

Agreed on that. I just love seeing a NY that feels lived in and authentic to Spidey's NY . As long as there is enough room to explore within that I don't need a whole lot more location-wise from a Spidey game. Just making that experience as high quality as possible is my preference over trying to make the map huge.

holy moley, that's critical acclaim right there

if I am not mistaken, Batman Arkham 2 is currently the highest rated comic book video game. that record might be beaten this week

Nice to see the great response to the game. Too bad it's been such a great game year though that I'll have to wait to play this. I'm still on my first BG3 playthrough and there's a good chance I'll do another before moving on from that. Not much reason to complain about to have another great game waiting for me though. I just need to try to stay clear of spoilers.

Their complaints aren't about the map size. It's the activities and side-missions that are seemingly "same ol', same ol'".
The excellent combat hasn’t gotten old, but it is largely the same fun as before, and despite that larger map, most of the open-world activities found within it are in desperate need of evolution.
Standard open-world filler activities are here aplenty, and that’s one area where Spider-Man 2 hasn't moved with the times or shown ambition at all. Collectibles, photo opportunities, and rather basic street crimes are still here and, despite having a few slightly more interesting quirks this time around, they only very occasionally excite. You’ll regularly be stopping the same getaways with the same few button presses (the button-mashing from previous games is mercifully largely gone) or stopping a break-in by battering the same few goons. Granted, the additional enemy variety in play makes these activities take a little longer to get old than they did in the past, but that still isn't quite a strong enough twist to make prioritising photographing a couple of amateur cosplayers over saving a house full of people from a raging fire not seem ridiculous.
The part that feels like it actually needed a radical rethinking is the open world of New York City, which has been made bigger but not better, with an exhausting checklist of mostly repetitious side activities.

Ah, I wasn't going to read the full review until after I've beaten the game but now I see what they were talking about. I guess like the first game, your mileage may vary with side activities. Personally I thought some of them got to be a bit repetitive in the first game, particularly the gang hangouts. I personally had more fun with the easter egg-y collectible side activities like the backpacks and taking pics of the city landmarks.

Apart from my PS4 being on life support after 6 years, Spider-Man 2 was one of my main reasons for wanting to upgrade to a PS5 as soon as possible. Crazy how we're three years into the PS5's lifespan and Spider-Man 2 is one of a few true PS5-only games.
I mean it'll probably come to PC in like a year anyway, which is what I'm waiting for cuz I know the suit modding scene is gonna be LIT

I think there's about a 2-3 year window between Playstation and PC release. I'm guessing this one will be 2 if the turnaround time for Miles Morales is anything to go by.

nah, for a heavyweight release like this there is no way it's coming to PC in a year. the first game took 4 years to do that, Miles Morales had 2 years to do that so I would give this game 2 years minimum before a PC release

ah, my bad! you beat me to it

I'm a late comer to the Playstation catalogue. Got gifted a PS4 a couple years ago and have been loving it much more than expected. Especially when it comes to the first Spiderman and Miles Morales. It sucks that we're at the point in its life cycle now where games are primarily being featured on the PS5, but that's just coming from a cheap dad with two kids and no time or money lol.

I hesitate to take the last PC release window at face value because that wasn't just how long it took for Spider-Man to go to PC, that's how long it took for Sony to become okay with their exclusives going to PC

With that in mind, in terms of them now being more open to the idea, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a far shorter time frame from the end of post game development to a PC release where all of that is combined

I dunno about that, man. Ragnarok released almost a year ago and there has been no PC announcement yet. Horizon 2 is scheduled to release early to mid next year, which gives it a 2 year time frame from its original launch.

If it's any consolation, PS4 is still very much alive mostly thanks to the PS5 being so hard to get for the first two years and I don't see it going away anytime soon.

Can't believe it's tomorrow! Unlocks at midnight EST for me. Probably won't play till the morning, because midnight is too late for me to start a game because I'll never shut it haha, but I wake up at like 5 AM anyways.

About a year ago, I actually met Yuri Lowenthal at my local comic con and he told me that we are all gonna be blown away by this. Hard to believe we are at this point finally!

I'm working a half day tomorrow so I won't be able to play until around 2 PM or so but the fact that it's about the same length as the first game means I should be able to get through the story mode this weekend.
