Actor Heath Ledger has signed up to play The Joker in the next Batman movie - but it's no joke when it comes to his character's lifelike doll...

The Brokeback Mountain star is anxious that the doll is so frightening kids won't want it.

A mole revealed: "He wants the doll to be user-friendly but thinks that children may be scared of the look they've created."
Mmm, I like this. Also - LMAO! Heath, I love you.

ETA: I should think that this would also indicate (assuming it is true of course) that the Joker is hardly going to be bland, as some have feared (yes, including me.) As long as it's not something like the Joker having a cut smile, I say - bring it on!

So he knows what the Joker will look like then?? Haha thats awesome. That means they must have conceptual artwork.

As I've said before; Screw the kids/children.:o
:)

Word!

However, when it comes to the doll, he has actually got a point. It does need to be marketable to the brats...I mean children, of course. *shifty eyes*

Considering that most of the toy-line-up consisted of ninja swords with the characters and batman costumes that never surfaced in the movie, probably not well (you cant do much with the imagination with a Liam Neeson action figure).

But at least we got a good movie, lol.

The only way the doll would be scary for children is if he was foaming at the mouth, with a blood-soaked straightjacket or purple suitcoat and slacks, and holding a bloody knife. Otherwise, it takes alot for today's kids to get scared.

Sounds good. The Joker should have some 'character' to his appearance; something menacing/psychotic, but not overly terrifying.

*cues countdown until someone posts the Conrad Veidt pic clamoring "This is how The Joker should look! OMG!!!11!!LOLZ!!*

Don't say that! You'll encourage them!

I go to wal-mart and k-mart and still see Batman Begins toys and costumes so I doubt sells were amazing.

NO NO NO NO NO!

Make the lips red THEN we have a perfect Joker!

I never understood why people think that a character like, Alfred, Gordon, Ra's Al Ghul, etc, wouldn't be wanted by kids. I always liked to play out full, in depth stories when I was a tot, and to do so- especially when you just saw a movie, you need ALL the supporting characters. When TOYSRUS came out with the exclusive Gordon and Alfred in like, 1997 I was psyched. It took them until I was 9 years old to get out the rest of the supporting cast. And even still it was hard to find toys of like, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Ra's Al Ghul, Talia, etc. and toys for Barbara and Tim were never made...I would have bought those as a kid.

^I bet you never bought a B&R Bane action figure did ya?

Dude, exactly.

I'm hoping when they release the Dark Knight figures, they also release new figures from Batman Begin. Like a Scarecrow with a better sculpt, a black suited Ra's(ninja or formal), and figures of Alfred and Gordon. They could release them in three packs if they wanted, each pair(Scarecrow and Ra's, Alfred and Gordon) packaged with a Batman figure. That would be great.

But this is just a pipe dream. Mattel will never do anything cool like that.

But still, I can dream...

I used to have this great batman figure where you would like push down his head and then Bruce Wayne's head would come up. Does anybody have a link to were that is sold or anything?

It'd be even better if they learned from ToyBiz and started putting a little ARTICULATION in their figures. It always kinda sucked having Batman figs with five points of articulation.

I had this Batman fig from '89 where the front half of his belt pulled out like a grappling hook on a retractable string. He had a cloth cape that was too short and didn't spread out into the right shape; and while the suit looked like Keaton's the head was from an older Batman sculpt, just done in black. Weird toy.

I used to have a Returns toy that was Keaton in a black sweater with a red bat on it, and black pants, and he had a chestplate, cowl and cape, gloves, and boots that could go onto him and turn him into Batman. Of course, with the "suit" on he looked like a kid in a Halloween costume. Another weird toy.

Batman toys have not evolved much; but Spider-man gets a giant figure with 67 points of articulation.

Marvel toys = awesome.

DC toys = crap.

:(

Is this the Batman Forever one?

IT very well may be as the only Robin figure I had was the Forever one. :csad:

I also had this weird batman figure where he had like a headset along with his cowl, he really had nothing covering his massively ripped body except for this neon greenish thing that held some swords. that was pretty cool.

My friend, we'd have a grand old time reminiscing about the Batman toys of yore. Strangely enough the Batman '89 figures were, in fact, manufactured by Toy Biz. They would later go on to make some pretty kick ass Marvel toys, Spidey in particular. That belt was a goofy little doohickey. Bob the Goon was my favorite of the series (lol). Personally, I'm STILL waiting for a Lt. Eckhardt figure, and have been since I was five. Bastards.

I believe that Keaton/Batman was from Kenner's Dark Knight collection, which also featured Joker in a pink and magenta suit, and his face changed color when you put water on it.

Christ, I miss those days. They don't make anything for kids like they used to. Toys... cartoons... ah, God it's all crap.

I agree. And so does Gary Glitter... for all the wrong reasons.

Is it me or does it look like heath put on a couple of pounds?

Hey, I loved that toy. I had like a thousand of 'em. They where awesome.

But yeah, recent toys kinda suck.

And I also get the idea that Mattel never knows what they're working on. Like with the BB figures, they had like a thousand different versions of crap. It's like they never had a clue what in the movie. It was filled with ninjas, gangsters, psychos and alot of crap which would've made great toys. None of that was in the toy line. It was all "Electric armor Batman", "Lazer Blaster Batman" or "Ridiculously large hands Scarecrow". It was stupid.

LOL. I know. They didn't like to make toys of fat guys. It took Kenner 30 years to make a Jek Porkins figure for their Star Wars line. Same actor, BTW. ;)

I believe you're right, but I'd forgotten about that one.

Yeah, I was remeniscing recently about the old 80's GI*JOE toys... those were awesome in every way. I had a mail order Hooded Cobra Commander, what a beautiful toy that was. And my mail-order Sergeant Slaughter.

There was a mail-order glow-in-the-dark RoboCop toy I used to have, too. Night-Fighter RoboCop. Even that big-ass handgun of his glowed. God, that was great.

You know something else they'd never make for kids nowadays? There was a series of fantasy toys... I don't even remember what they were called, it was from the late 70's or early 80's... but some of the figs had a place where you'd put a flint in it, and thumb the wheel on their back and sparks would go off inside the torso and clear plastic parts would light up from the sparks. I used to burn my thumbs on that damn thing. Good times, good times. :hyper:

That's actually because Mattel is stupid.

Mattel always does that with their Batman toys. It doesn't matter if it's TAS figs, movie figs, comic figs... they always have to make "Neon Camouflage Stomach Pump Attack Batman with Scuba-Mask and Parachute."

The reason is that they believe the only toys that will sell are Batman figs. So they make a bunch of variants of him just to try and sell as many figs as they can.

What, you want him to actually FIGHT somebody? Okay, here's "Ridiculously Large Hands Scarecrow," and, just for fun, he'll look NOTHING like the guy in the movie. Have fun, kids.

That's why Batman toys suck, Mattel has NO CLUE how to do it. It's also why there were so many costume changes in Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. They figured if Mattel was going to make a million different versions of the same three characters, the filmmakers might as well control how they would look.

And even then -- most notably for Batman & Robin - the toys STILL bore no resemblance to anything in the movie.

I had no idea there was such passion for this.
