Internet Drinking: Drink, Drank, Drunk?

JLBats made an excellent point, in a thread, regarding drinking alcoholic beverages and then posting online.

The Situation: Person comes online, claims to be drunk, makes typos and random/silly comments. Their excuse "Man, I'm hammered, I'm just trying to entertain myself in my online community..."

The Rebuttal: JL among others, including myself, make intelligent or at least understandable posts when under the influence. Thus suggesting that the above is more of a plea for attention or some spammer-ish attempt at entertaining one's self on the message board. If there is any credence, it is at least embellishing.

The Defense: There is a reason that worldwide, people are not supposed to drink and drive or operate machinery. Drinking causes individuals to loosen up and become whimsical and light hearted. Thus, those that find random comedy amusing might be inclined to state or type random things.


What is your position? Do you feel that most people fake being drunk when typo-ing or that it is a side effect of being drunk?

Be serious and explain yourself. No need for a poll, as I'm requesting serious thought out answers.

Like, I'll make random comments or have little typos here and there, but I have definitely "added in" typos, just so people would be assured I was really drunk. But I've never typed something as incredibly muddled and strange and typo-filled as say, Hush is doing right now, and generally anything I type is COHERENT.
But, meh, I accept that maybe SOME people lose the ability to type under the influence. I've just always found it's sort of a sham in my own personal experience.

I agree that you have a valid point, though, that's why I made a thread out of it. I mean a lot of people do incredible things for attention or just to be noticed. Even if it's as harmless as pretending to be drunk or as harmful as getting drunk for attention.

Look at YouTube for instance, people think they are internet gods because they have a couple thousand views here or there. It's seriously lame how Tay Zonday and Tron Guy have become B-Level Celeberties just from being silly on the internet.

That's why I stay on Super Hero Hype, when I feel like commenting on a Message Board as opposed to GameFAQs or 4Chan. Yeah we have less members, and increasingly less members online at once, but overall we're good coherent people.

Excuse my mini-rant.

Long story-short, people definitely will add in typos and do zaney things for the hell of it. And testament to your theory, notice the one board he picks to post most of it? If you're aware enough to log on and post in the boards dedicated to community, and mostly in the "random" thread, then you should be aware enough to talk correctly.


Not trying to put Hush down or rain on his proverbial parade. But I just want to be fair to both sides of the argument.

i think people do fake being drunk a lot. If not, they def exagerate. The only time i don't exagerate is when i am REALLY drunk and i don't realize it. But if i know i am drunk, i usually say things that i know i can get away with. i do the same thing in real life with drunk dialing and such. I am not going to tell a girl when i am sober that i "love her," especially if she is my girlfriend. But if i am drunk, i can say whatever i want. I can even propose to a girl when i am drunk and it will just look cute and innocent. if i did that sober, there would be serious discussions and explanations...about........feelings. blah.

But if i am REALLY drunk, i won't exagerate because i will think i am no drunk or i just wont realize what i am doing. the main thing when i drink in post, i type really fast and don't fix my mistakes. and if i am excited, i call people names. if i am horny, i throw pick up lines at the girls. really bad ones too

I've been drinking since I was 16. Not so much back then, being exceedingly illegal and just unhealthy. But I've had to learn how to pretend to be sober to pass by cops, parents, adults, etc.

So, when drunk not only can I type coherently, but I can speak intelligently and walk in a straight line and everything.

(When I say drunk I mean the last level of being buzzed before being drunk out of your mind, as I never drink to get DRUNK....those occasions were accidents and ended with me either puking or losing a tooth because I kicked a tree, bounced off and landed on a car before rolling off and catching the planet with my face.)

I come to the Hype for amusement. I also tend to drink to amuse myself... it's like an amusement park ride without the machinery. I just insert alcohol and out comes the fun and excitement. Maybe not on such an extreme level, but drinking is definitely a way for me to release some stress and relax.

That being said, I've been on the Hype many times whilst inebriated. There are times when I can type very coherently... sometimes my mind feels even more clear than if I were sober. But there have also been many times where I have logged on the next day... and found my posts to be drivel amongst the drivel. Really horribly typed vomit that I'm surprised the internets were willing to translate from the 1's and 0's, because honestly, it wasn't worth the work to do it.

Was I faking it? Who fakes things on the internet? Well, it's obvious JAL fakes things sometimes (his childhood meeting with Alba). People fake their sex in order to achieve things (Tangled Web... lol). But I don't feel the need to really do so... and I have nothing to prove to anybody here really to try and do so in the first place. I know enough people here who know me... and am comfortable enough in my life to not give a damn about whether DarkBatman'sNuts1 really... truly... thinks I'm telling the truth about the level of my inebriation.

That being said... I haven't had a single drop of alcohol tonight. I think it's time to remedy that.
