Ok Bing I understand...Bing sucks....but Surface tablets and Xbox? Months after they released Surface 2 and Xbox One? Are you kidding me? I'm not an avid Xbox junky...I own a PS3 but this just doesn't make sense to me.

It's the morning after Satya Nadella's first day as Microsoft's CEO. Now that the confetti has cleared, Nadella faces tough choices about the path forward for the company.
Two influential Microsoft shareholders have been pushing the Redmond software giant to abandon what they view as non-essential product lines so that Microsoft can focus on its core strength: selling enterprise software to businesses. Nadella has spent the last seven months running Microsoft's $20 billion server and tools division, so he could be ideally suited to manage that transition.

But doing so would mean repudiating much of the legacy of his predecessors, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, who have long believed that Microsoft needs to win over consumers, not just corporate IT managers. As a 22-year Microsoft insider, Nadella owes much of his career to Gates and Ballmer.

I doubt he'll do something that boneheaded. Just because they're investors doesn't mean they know the best direction for the company.

That would be the downfall of that company if they were to ever do something that stupid. No way will he make that decision

I could see them spinning off the XBOX division as a separate entertainment division.

I really hope they don't. I have a Surface and it's a great tablet. I also have a Zune, which was horribly underrated because it wasn't pretty. That little brick still works...lol

Even though I don't care about Xbox, I hope this actually doesn't happen. You get rid of Sony's competition, and they are just going to get lazy. And I don't want a single console giant dictating the market.

Steam Box son.....go check it out.

Steam Box looks amazing. Me wanty. Seriously though, I love the idea and the fact there is going to be several different versions coming out from different companies and they'll all be upgradable over time. Combine that with the Steam sales and you have the best game console ever.

I'm a sure buyer as long as they can confirm if we can mod games, otherwise I'll be a surly confirmed buyer.

Sony will be forced to stop the playstation way before ms does the xbox

Sometimes, investors will sell an entire company's future for 10 cents so they can make a dollar tomorrow.

Steam Box is just a really souped-up PC with a console look. There's not going to be real competition from them. Their games are going to be primarily PC (ie; Windows) games and though it might win over a few people, don't expect it to alter the console landscape much.

It's a real disappointment since we've got three competitors but only two actual contenders and neither is pushing all that hard to innovate in a positive direction.

Considering the plethora of available games for a fraction of the cost of the console prices I think it could be a bit of a sleeper hit once it comes out. Especially considering how MS does it's 'sales' where you might get 10-20% off a very few games and with steam you get 50-75% off a ton at once.

It'll make a splash for sure but will that splash result in any significant waves in the way consoles work? Will it offer a new competition that forces Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo (if it manages not to sink itself any further) into new innovation that isn't about monetizing consumers but actually giving us things we'd want and use?

Kinnect's spying camera and the touch pad from Nintendo? Mostly failures. The dashboards on both the PS4 and XBone are seen as mild improvements but the actual, important part of these things, the gameplay, it hasn't really been innovated in a useful way in years.
