This, to me, is just part of what should be basic human rights. I almost can't believe it is only just about to become legal.
Not to say I am not pleased though. Just dismayed it has taken so long and that it was ever "a thing" at all.
But homosexuality was not decriminalised in the United Kingdom until the 1960's...

First country in the world according to the article.

I'm trying to come up with a "Lucky Charms" related joke, but it's just not coming together. Damnit, I wonder if Fallon has problems like this too.

It passed on 62% of the vote. :D

In other words the majority of the people agreed it was time to legalize gay marriage and did not need to have government intervention to force it.

That's great news! The US is slowly but surely coming around...

Homosexuality wasn't decriminalised in the Republic of Ireland until the early nineties.

Northern Ireland is now the only part of the British Isles that doesn't recognize Gay Marriage which is pretty awkward.
first country to do it on a national level?

First country by referendum. The Irish constitution meant there had to be a referendum for it to become legal in the Irish Republic.

Here is a list of 20 other countries where same-sex marriage is legal nationwide and the year it was approved (Mexico and the United States are not included, since they only allow same-sex marriage in certain jurisdictions):

The Netherlands (2000)

Belgium (2003)

Canada (2005)

Spain (2005)

South Africa (2006)

Norway (2009)

Sweden (2009)

Argentina (2010)

Iceland (2010)

Portugal (2010)

Denmark (2012)

Brazil (2013)

England and Wales (2013)

France (2013)

New Zealand (2013)

Uruguay (2013)

Luxembourg (2014)

Scotland (2014)

Finland: (signed 2015, effective 2017)

Come mid-June, this will hopefully change for the United States when the Supreme Court rules on it.

Wow! Nothing in the 20th Century? I'm truly shocked at that statistic...

Why does Finland have to wait 2 years? Do they need that much time to prepare for gay weddings? I don't get laws sometimes.

Probably has something to do with how and when laws take effect. For instance, in the U.S. congressmen can vote themselves raises but the raise doesn't take effect until after the next election. They get around this by voting themselves Cost of Living Adjustments, but you get the point. Some legislature and changes don't go into immediate effect for various legit and not so legit reasons.

Well yeah, I get that. My point is waiting 2 years for a law that's been shown to be very easy to implement is ridiculous and cruel to those same-sex spouses in waiting.

It's bloody ridiculous. It's going to happen anyway. The opponents get nothing of value by delaying the inevitable by 2 years, except to show off what bitter and spiteful losers they are.

I googled it to find out why and this is why:

The reform will require wide-ranging changes in other legislation, which will take well over a year to finalise. The law will therefore not take effect until 2016 at the earliest.

According to officials, various family social and health entitlements will have to be examined and revised, as will the law on the legal status of registered same-sex couples. Revisions are to be submitted to Parliament this coming autumn.

So basically the government wants the entitlements and benefits and legal paperwork figured out before they start handing out marriage license.

Yeah I get it, Marv. But it shouldn't take 2 years to do that.

It passed because beer is a more important matter...fella.

Yeah, it's a progressive step. The cynic in you can assume all these are just for political gain, which a lot of rights based laws are under the surface, but still a good step.
