I think having both could be fun.

I had an idea where Barry is happily engaged to Patty, but when he travels to the future (or when Bart travels to the present) he learns that he actually gets married to someone else named Iris West. In the last scene of the movie he meets Iris in an elevator or something.

I wouldn't mind seeing Patty as Barry's love interest in the movie, I think she'd fit fine.

Patty's not a bad character or choice for a love interest. However, the "partner from work becoming a romantic interest" thing is a bit contrived. Definitely overdone. Then again, Iris - the reporter - may be too similar to Lois Lane's relationship with Superman. Either way, they're likely going to have to redesign both relationships to make them work for this movie.
