For those who don't know,...Joe Satriani (virtuosic guitarist and former mentor/instructor to Steve Vai) had a big hit with 'Surfing with the Alien' album. He pretty accurately captured the raw energy and feeling of Silver Surfer soaring through the cosmos and featured ,I think, a John Byrne Silver Surfer illustration (I used to think it was Buscema) on the album cover. Although I hear he was unaware of the Surfer at the time and it was a technician in the booth who pointed this out to him, Satriani seems to have embraced this character and has made reference to it ever since on albums and concerts. In essence making a deeper, more cult like part of his persona.

After that lenthy introduction for the uninitiated,...does anyone think they'll use Satriani music in the movie? Would be cool and would be another inside nod to the already cultish audience. I love nods.

Using "Surfing With The Alien" in the movie would be just like using "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath in the Iron Man movie...too obvious and kind of cheesy.

Well I see your point although Iron Man by Sabbath wasn't, I don't think, specifically written about our Iron Man. Satriani's eventually became about Silver Surfer. I don't see it being used as the soundtrack for him flying but it'd be cool to have him surf past a car or house and we briefly hear that music. I still think that could be done.

I mean, I'm not talking cheese but FF was one of the more light hearted of the Marvel movies.

Now that you bring it up,...I can see Sabbath being used in the Iron Man movie.

I want Sabbath in the Teaser Trailer for Iron Man.

So I'll take Satch in the Teaser Trailer for FF2! :D

No :o "Surfing With The Alien" was not "a big hit", and I'm certain that the producers of the film are more concerned with licensing some up-and-coming (meaning popular but cheap) eXtreme emo-core whine bands than an obscure instrumental from someone who wouldn't have any legs on Mtv2.

Surfin' wasn't a big hit? I seem to remember it all over the radio back in the day. Everyone had the CD too it seems. Course this is just personal experience and nothing that I can document. :D

agree completely!

big hit or not, and I understand where you're coming from Wilhelm, (corporate people saying "if it doesn't spell money then forget about it") but seems like an opportunity lost for all if it's ignored. It just seems it helps everybody. Interest drummed up for the movie is interest.

And again, bottom line, I just think it'd be a cool little nod.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Beach Boys - Surfin' USA.

....except for the fact that Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel Comic character, where as both "Surfing with the Alien" and "Back to Shalla Bal" were all about the Silver Surfer. Not to mention the fact that both those songs are instrumentals.

I doubt that will be musics already releaseds.

Why? Lots of movies have used previously released music...

I've never heard it, I've only seen the album cover and read about it in Guitar Magazine...so yes, it was not a "BIG HIT".

"BIG HIT"'s ?:

Billie Jean
I'm Too Sexy For My Shirt
Rock Of Ages
The Thong Song
All I Wanna Do (Is Have Some Fun)
Vogue
For What It's Worth
Mambo #5
Help
Whole Lotta Love

No, "Surfing With The Alien" was not a "BIG hit". :o

Okay,

Maybe we're being a bit too nitpicky of the definition of big hit. I just know that it was a big hit for Satriani. Maybe not on a huge billboard scale but certainly big for an instrumentalist.

I'm just saying if ever there was a time to use it.....

Did you ever hear Laurie Lewis's "big hit"?
'Cause it would totally be appropriate for F42!

I don't remember off hand if that particular album was a big hit or not, Satriani was probably best remembered for writing the theme music for Top Gun. He also had alot of play time from 1989's Big Bad Moon, which was his first ever release that he ever sang on.

Why not? Sounds like some fun music to add. Its not like he would be composing the whole thing. Why not have some music from this guy?
