To the doubters, here is proof.

To my fellow marching band geeks, vindication is ours.

Eh, it's more of a sport than NASCAR, at least.

for sure, nascar is sitting and driving in circles. I can do that for free every day if I want too.

:funny:

Nascar drivers lose about 10 pounds each race. I would love to see you do that everyday. Drivers also have to withstand a certain amound of G-forces(depends on what track they're at) when driving. You have to be in physical shape to go through that for 3 hours. Driving in Nascar takes on a physical grind that requires mental awarness for long periods of time. So IMHO, Nascar is a sport.

Nope. It's choreography combined with instrumental playing. I lugged a Sousaphone over my left shoulder through football seasons and parade compettions all through High School.

It's no more a sport than Synchronized Swimming and IMHO Synchronized Swimming isn't a sport!

Eh, too many things that aren't sports are labeled as sports. Marching band ain't one of 'em, and the status of NASCAR, golf, and synchronized swimming are debatable at best.

Hmm... I don't hear people claiming that fighter pilots are playing a sport when they fly. Nascar is a competition... but I don't think the athleticism is as prevalent as you think. Mental endurance is a greater factor IMO.

Ohhhh they do it without their shirts on...what a well trained group of sportsmen.

Marching Band is serious business.

I know a guy who played football and was part of a military marching band.
He told me that band was way more physically strenuous than football was.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a "sport" though, even when it's in competition.

I'd bet you'd get the same results if you monitored a rock bands performance, would you considered a rock concert a sport.

I was in the marching band in high school, the drum line as well. Played the Bass drum and snare, respectively.

With my experience, I would not consider Marching Band a sport. It is entertainment, and includes competitions, but a sport? No.

My idea of a sport includes actual contact and/or interaction with the oppossing team. In marching band what do you do during competitions? You SIT and WATCH the opposing group.

Marching Band is not a sport. If it was, why would the have another sport playing during a sporting event? Come watch our football game and see our marching band game as a bonus. A marching band is exactly what the title suggests, a band that marches. So its more like moving music than anything else.

Exactly. A marching band can't score... in more ways than one. :o

Why...did he sit on the bench when he "played football"?

Marching band is not a sport. What happens to and from games...that often is.

Marching band can't score? What band were you a part of?

Moving around a lot with an increased heart rate does not a sport make. If marching band is a sport, then so is choreographed dancing, and Michael Jackson is one of the greatest athletes of the late 20th century.

I would say a sport is defined by the fact that it does take physical activity, and it does not require a judge to determine a winner.

For instance, chess does not require a judge, nor physical activity, so it is not a sport, rather a game

Dance and marching band have physical activity, but there are no points and it requires judges, thus these are competitions not sports.

While boxing and baseball have umpire and judges, these do not determine the winner (except in boxing occasionally, but a victory can be decided without a judge).

What I'm on the fence about is whether or not Fantasy games, like in Rolemodels are sports, where people dress up and run around and have battles. I'm not sure there.

Nascar weight loss is mostly sweat. If it was any other type of body mass loss, it'd likely kill them before they made mile 200.

Fighter pilots don't race each other for 3+ hours. I also don't see their highlights on Sportscenter. The NFL, NBA and NHL all have halftimes/intermissions. MLB players get to sit in a dugout untill they are up to bat or playing in the field. Nascar drivers have to sit a 150 degree car for long periods of time without getting out to stretch. The mental awarness that goes into driving stock cars, is the fact that the drivers have to hit their mark exactly. Fail to do so results in this....

Nascar might be on Sportscenter... but I still don't consider it a true sport. Merely a competition... regardless of how long they sit in their cars going in circles.

Nascar is stupid and so are marching band movies...suck it Drum Line...stupid *** movie.
