Is taking the creative, artistic path worth the risk?

That's what I thought.

Unless you're a ****ing genius. And what are the chances of that happening? :down

what if you are a genius? can you be creative? there are technical geniuses sure, but canthey become artist or writers?

I'm currently on that very path, and honestly, I know that it helps me get out of bed in the morning knowing that I'm not just gonna end up sitting at some desk all day. Yeah, I may end up homeless or something, but I'd rather do that then chain myself down to a 9-5.

I like to think that the fact that I'm insane, self loathing, and depressed lends itself to my art:huh:

If I do anything with my life I'd like it to involve some kind of art, and I use that in a broad term. Otherwise, I'll probably end up a hobo. Don't mind either two cents about it:huh:

I don't think I could live a life that was not artistic. I wake up every morning thinking about what I am going to write and I go to bed thinking about what I will write tomorrow. I don't do that with my "day jobs"

What do you think?

In order to become an artist or a writer you must have talent, dedication, and perseverance. There is no praciticing.

You are born an artist; you do not become one.

If you feel fulfilled, you feel fulfilled. Some people may find that through art, some by being monetarily sucessful. It's a personal thing. If art is what you want, you should go for it. I personally am going for an academic path. Will it make me all kinds of money? Probably not, it's what I want.

And you can have all the talent you want in the world, you certainly need a whole hell of a lot of work and practice to make art. No one is born with immaculate technique, abilities, etc. If you're not constantly trying to develop, your not really creating much.

Oh, and BTW, music is sort of an art too.

I know 3 people with college degrees in the arts, and they never even got a job with it (one that i know of went back to school to get something more "practical").

If you have a talent for it and love to do it, its something you should do off to the side as a hobby and not something you should depend on.

I think you are born with latent abilities, its just a case of finding a way of bringing them out.

One of the best things I've seen regarding the subject was a musician on some PBS kid's show.
He said that you shouldn't try to make a career out of your art unless you have no other choice, meaning that, it's so difficult to succeed in those fields that for the most part, the only people who will have the tenacity to persevere will be those who are blinded by their insane passion and desire to devote their work to their art instead of taking the safe, stable "go to college, get a good job, work, go home, get married, buy house, have kids, die" route.

Uh.. I didn't get a single word you said. Can you explain it to be a little bit more clearly? :cwink:

I've wanted to be a writer since i was younger, but as you get older, you realize you do need a fallback, as only a handful of people actually make it in the artsy world.

I'M GOING to risk my future on my writing. I don't care what really happens to me, otherwise.

EDIT: Me bad speller.:(

for those interested in becoming writers you need two books, in my opinion. stephen king's "on writing: a memoir of the craft" and strunk and white's "The elements of style"

for the hard core writers in here im sure they will be like no **** sherlock, but for those of you aspiring writers, those books definately help.

I can only do artistic stuff....but apparently I'm good at it. I just won first place in a writing contest and came in second in the last one. Plus the first draft of my script is getting great reviews.
And when it comes to my drawing skills my art teacher is pressuring me to go to art school.

I corrected it before I saw you two post. I never read over my stuff until after I click post....Damn what an embarrassing post to make a typo in....

Guess thats what I get for laughing at Comicboy....
