Marvel sharpens 'Blade'

For the Daily News
With seemingly continual news of yet another comic book being turned into a film, it is worth noting that the genre was in questionable health following 1997's poorly received "Batman and Robin." Back then, many wondered whether Marvel would ever release a decent or successful movie based on one of its characters or properties.
Then Wesley Snipes brought a character named Blade to life on the silver screen. Suddenly, Marvel was rolling, and still is - 21 films based on its characters are in development or production.
However, despite the success of that first "Blade" film and its two sequels, Marvel's attempts to capitalize on the character's mainstream popularity by launching new comic series have quickly failed. The character's last two book series did not last past six issues.
Now, even though a "Blade" series on Spike TV was recently canceled after 13 episodes, Marvel is trying "Blade" again as a comic.
This time, Marvel may have hit the jackpot.
"Blade No. 1," released last week, was a strong premiere issue. One need look no further than its credits to realize why. Writer Marc Guggenheim, still kicking butt on "Wolverine," brings the same quality to "Blade." In fact, Guggenheim's plan for the book is what enticed comics legend Howard Chaykin to draw the series. Chaykin's art here ranks with the best of his career.
If there is one complaint, it is that Guggenheim may be trying to move too fast and pack in too much in each issue. In No. 1, we get a vampiric Spider-Man, Dracula and a grade-school classroom full of kids-turned-vampires - all in the first five pages! Toss in a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier full of vampires and a series of flashbacks and there isn't a lot of room for depth.
Nonetheless, the issue is exciting and beautiful. With this creative team, an appearance by Doctor Doom next issue, and a Civil War tie-in down the road, it is clear that Marvel is doing the best it can to make people aware of the book and have it succeed. Now all you have to do is buy it.
