WBTV Press Release

SAN DIEGO and BURBANK, Calif. (July 24, 2009) - Calling all “Smallville” fans! Series star and co-executive producer Tom Welling will make his first-ever appearance at the world’s greatest pop culture convention, Comic-Con International: San Diego, this Sunday, July 26.

First a big announcement to be revealed at Comic-Con, Tom coming to Comic-Con, now this! If this is true.....WOW!!!:wow:

It's true and I'm not surprised.

It was really the next step for him in the show.

yeah it's true but I doubt he has any real say in what goes on. It's probably just a title to keep him satisfied along with a big raise.

Well he is a co producer, and i guess maybe since he been so into doing the directing thing for the show he wanted to move into more things, wanted more control over his character's direction. We know he wasnt to happy with the character during seasons 5-7 if i recalled and was pretty happy with the character this year. Its not uncommon for actors in shows to become writers/directors/producers during a later point in a series. One show i can remember is during the 4th season of sliders jerry o'connel became a producer for the series. I know there is other examples out there but i cant think of any right now.

Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs were Co-Producers on Charmed from Season 5-8.

yea its not an uncommon thing if a show goes for a long while for actors to become more in control with the series, or hell if a creator/producer also acts in a show.

It's not uncommon, other actors have done it too (like Lauren Graham for the Gilmore Girls) but I don't think it's just a title to boost Tom's ego either.

Maybe with some of those other shows, but I doubt with Smallville that Tom will just take the extra dough without earning it. He's got a very strong work ethic.

He'll take his new responsibilities seriously, I'm sure.

Yea hopefully he can help keep things in check and we dont get some wtf things like what went down with davis, the fake jimmy in the finale.

Yep, I trust Tom. He's smart and he'll do the right thing for the show and for Clark.

Yup should be interesting to see what happens now.

Its good news for Tom Welling

The co-executive producer gig must mean he now has a say in where things go behind the cameras as well as some creative control with his character

Everytime we've heard that Tom's input has turned the show its been for the good so this is great news.

I'm very happy that Tom is an exec. producer now. I'm very proud of him! :woot:

I'm sure that if he can do something to improve the way Clark is written on the show, he'll do it. And I completely trust his judgement. :yay:

Why would you ask about this in a thread, if you already have the info?

Incase it was a misprint maybe?

Or to let people know who'd missed it?

Yea like what B said. Now lets hope we get some good stuff out of tom as a producer now to wash away the bad tase of the lana arc and the crazy stuff in season finale.

This. "Executive Producer" is an honourary title of thanks. Tim Burton was an EP even though he had litterally nothing to do with Batman Forever, it was just to acknowledge him. Maybe Tom thinks he has more power, but at the end of the day he's just an actor and doesn't know much about film/tv production.

why do you think that man over the years tom has gotten into more things then just acting in the show from directing episodes from season 5-now why couldnt he have it as a real titl and real responsiblities.

he definitely doesn't have the responisibilites as Souders and Peterson though. I doubt he has enough sway to change a major arc or something.

Well, I would think Tom has more of a say over his character, like Clark's character development, which he has complained about in the past and I'm sure he will use his new position to improve Clark more.

Ya hopefully he will hav more say in his character.

In all fairness, nobody but Welling knows what he himself is thinking. There's been speculation as to whether Tom has more power on the series but that's not relative to what he actually believes.

As to how much power Tom has, as the star of the series i'm pretty sure he had a lot of power to begin with. If he walks, the other producers are screwed, and the network loses it's highest rated show (which it seems to hate).

I highly doubt he's the kind of person to take a title only position.
