I remember when I used to be the only hardcore fan. Now, he has this huge fan base and his movies are now more popular than ever before.

I mean, 13 years ago I would have never imagined a Nightmare Before Christmas re-release in 3D and a highly promoted telecast on Cartoon Network.

Not to mention all these damn emo kids who have claimed Burton as their own. lol.

Burton's made some good, as well as unique films.

So his popularity isnt really unwarranted.

Burton's one of the most unique and creative directors ever. I love him.

I have an english teacher who looks just like Tim Burton...they are so similar it's creepy. :ninja:

Burton's more miss than hit. I mean, how could anyone especially Burton mess up Sleepy Hollow? The only movies I like of his are Batman, Ed Wood, and I think I remember liking Edward Scissorhands, but its been a while, and a few of his older movies are pretty good. Everything he's done recently, Planet of the Apes especially, has SUCKED. And when he sucks, he sucks BAD.

I am not alone when I say that Burton is overrated. I think he needs to start living up to his potential.

Batman, Batman returns, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare before christmas.

You might not be too found of the guy for watever reasons, but there's aren't that many directors you can named that have made at least 6 good movies.

And Sleepy Hollow, Big fish, Mars attack and corpse pride weren't bad. Aside from planet of the apes (which, I agree, was very bad) and Charlie and the chocolate factory (a very uneeded remake, imo), I don't see how he could be overrated.

Overrated is a very overrated word, meh.

Burton's at least original, compared to most crap out there. In a time when movies like Armageddon and Van Helsing make money, Burton is far from being overrated.

Tim Burton is either very good (Ed Wood) or very bad (Sleepy Hollow). At the very least, he isn't boring. I'd like a better success rate, but it is better to go out with all guns blazing than make a bunch of boring, sanitized junk like Chris Columbus or Roland Emmerich do.

For every Planet of the apes crap, we get a big fish or a beetlejuice. For every crap american Godzilla remake, what does Emmerich give us back ? The day after tomorrow ? :oldrazz:

I agree entirely with you.

Yeah I guess you can say Burton has always been hit or miss. I loved Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands but movies like Planet of the Apes and (yes sorry) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I didn't dig.

Edward Scissorhands is a beautiful and amazing movie. Truly one of my favorite movies ever. I have known that since I was little when it first came out.

C&TCF is a great movie. BR is awesome, so dark, I loved it.

He's been miss for the last few years. But he made Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward, Ed Wood, Nightmare before christmas and Batman returns all in a row. He sure wasn't hit or miss back then.

Oh how times have changed. I wonder if he'll ever go back to making two good films in a row ?

Well it isn't like I hated CATCF but the original was just too good and can never be outdone so I guess that affected my judgement on it.

Well he almost had a huge miss back then *Coughs* Superman Lives *Cough*. I think after Ed Wood he started to hit some bumpy road.

I watched Corpse Bride and i don't see what was so great about it. I mean it was a okay movie to watch on tv but not to see in the theater.

Very disappointing. Nightmare before christmas was packed with originality, from it's main character (Jack, such a weird hero) to every designs you can find. Heck, even the story was incredibly original. No wonder people still salivates at it 10 years later.

But corpse bride ? It runs it's success on Jack's past adventure. Sure, the animation is beauuutiful, even mesmering. But the story is so generic, the sort we've seen so many times. Worst, it open for so few originality in it's designs. Where Nightmare offered us a world of halloween and creatures of the night, Corpse bride offers us glimpse of the world of the death (which consist of skeleton and... Skeleton! Oh, and MORE skeleton designs!)

Oh, and the story was so simple and laid out to everyone. In nightmares, who knew where this crazefest was going ? Jack kidnapping Santa Clause ? Giving rotten heads to children ? Getting attacked by the military ? Fighting the boogeyman ?

Now THAT was animation. I'm glad Wallace and gromit beat it both in popularity and with the critics.

Don't care for Batman Returns or Nightmare. Both are good examples of typical Burton unchecked overindulgence.

First of all, I was pretty clear why I don't like him. He makes very few good, not really great, movies. And his vision of Superman pretty much condemns him as well.

Secondly, I can name quite a few directors that are better than he is. You shouldn't assume things. :woot:

Yes, they were.

When someone makes more bad films than good, and there is this obnoxious, quick-to-defend-him fanbase that whines at any slight criticism against him, than that person can easily be considered overrated.

Overrated is a very overrated word, meh.

Its also very valid when dealing with the height people put some of their idols at.

I agree he's better than the crap that you listed, but as I said, when someone makes more bad films than good, I consider them overrated. Just because they don't make total crap doesn't mean they're the greatest filmmakers in the world. That's not a justification.

I don't really like Burton. Its just my humble opinion.

Hey, I haven't had any Burton interest since I was 14 max, so i'm not exactly his biggest admirer (though, I do have found memories of his earlier work I listed, and of how good he is at taking inspiration from the older german expressionist wave), but I still hope he'll come back to his past glory and prove me he can still do it one day.

I'm not too fond of the guy as I think he gets too much credit just for repeating himeself.

Burton's films are more miss than hit with me, really. I only really enjoyed Nightmare and Big Fish, although I just caught Mars Attacks! on TV and that was some ridiculous, cheesy fun. But, at least you know you're watching a Burton film. He's definitely got his own style.
