Think it's time there was a thread where people can openly discuss the film without the need for putting everything in SPOILER or BLACKOUT tags!

If I'm honest, I think they could've made Luke's outfit a tiny bit better. I don't like how his hood/cloak is sowed onto his outfit. I think I prefer him with shorter hair as well like how Hamill has it now, instead of a wig.

Favourite new characters were Rey & Ben Solo without a doubt though.

The one thing I couldn't work out before the film came out was R2's role. Glad he was dormant until Rey showed up. Love how he has so much love his master Luke!

Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS
Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen from
the ashes of the Empire
and will not rest until
Skywalker, the last Jedi,
has been destroyed.

With the support of the
REPUBLIC, General Leia Organa
leads a brave RESISTANCE.
She is desperate to find her
brother Luke and gain his
help in restoring peace
and justice to the galaxy.

Leia has sent her most daring
pilot on a secret mission
to Jakku, where an old ally
has discovered a clue to
Luke's whereabouts....

Is that why he switched himself on? I perceived it as a plot convenience, cos they had BB8, they had R2 right after they left Kanata's planet, R2 coulda switched on right then and there.

I think they are playing on the destiny thing. In Episode IV Luke 'stumbles' upon the "Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi" message setting the Saga in motion. R2 is temperamental and Rey turning up when R2 turns on could be a homage.

I really liked how Kylo Ren was portrayed. I don't think he gets the same kind of respect from the troopers as Darth Vader though. He is still young and it shows. I think the stormtroopers fear him because he is unpredictable and unstable mofo, but they don't really respect him. He also came off like a bratty teacher's pet to Snokes teacher. I bet the stormtroopers hate him. :D

It's no coincidence both his tantrums are played for laughs. He can't command respect they way Vader did.

Eh, not buying it, based on what I saw. If there was a shot of R2 "sensing" Rey, maybe.

I have a feeling R2 was left behind because he couldn't get up those blasted steps.

Prequel Artoo would have used his burners. :o

I can most certainly say they're not siblings.

Not sure. But it's pretty safe bet to say Rey is a Skywalker. And just goes to show what a ****** parents the Skywalkers are from one generation to another. They like to leave their kids to ****** outback planets to live almost like slaves. Maybe.

I always thought Han and Leia had twins...at least I think that was the case on some novels

The old EU is no longer canon. It's a fresh start.

Leia AND Han met Rey. Kylo met Rey. Nobody recognized anyone. No "there is another" implications. They're not siblings.

- The way Rey tested out the Jedi Mind Trick lol.
- Seeing how the Millennium Falcon came out of Hyperspace too was pretty awesome.
- The expanded interior of the Falcon too was a nice touch.
- Daisy Ridley really nailed it with Rey, her accent and her facial expression when chasing after Finn for the first time. Would you like to be chased after a woman with rage like that lol.
- The lengthy search for Luke at the end as if it were like searching for a long lost Martial Arts Master in a Kung Fu film or something.
- Poe's awesome Piloting skills where Finn watches in awe.

Really liked the film. it wasn't anything groundbreaking and perhaps had too much homage/nods to the first, but a solid movie with some great action.

PLUS POINTS
  • Rey - A little bit too of a generic-no-faults goodguy that her dad was before her, but she was fun and good enough.
  • BB8 - A lot of personality in the little robot, already prefer him to the original droids.
  • Kylo Ren - Pretty awesome, despite his emo undertones. His face-reveal was a great scene in the movie. Come on, you all assumed he'd be scarred up a little too didn't you?
  • The entire end act. Sure the Squadrons plan seemed a bit dumb (and non-existant) but the action made up for that. The Lightsaber battle chopping down trees in the way was pretty epic!
  • Leia and Han interaction. Kinda sad that it just never really worked for them and fell apart, the two still have great chemistry though.
NEGATIVE POINTS

  • Not enough downtime. There needed more slow beats to help make characters feel real. Some of the scenes just felt like they needed a little more time to breath.
  • Finn. He should have had another movie or so to flesh out his character to make his deserting have real motivation and weight. It was just too quick a switch. As soon as he took off his helmet he was just one or two "WOO YEAH!"'s away from me wondering how the hell he was ever a Stormtrooper in the first place, especially as all the others seem simply remorseless killers. They could switch his ST past to him just being a merchants kid or something and it would have literally no effect on the character.
  • rey+Finn "Romance"? - Again, it seemed a bit forced as it was all rushed. It doesn't help that the two of them have probably barely seen any other real people before. +They don't really improve eachothers as characters because as soon as Finn stops being a ST he just becomes generic-good-guy too. Think I'm going to ship Kylo-Rey instead!
  • Captain Phasma - There's been interviews with the actress all over the place. I assumed she'd do SOMETHING apart from being a generically (yet shiney) Stormtrooper. Was actually disapointed there wasn't more to her as she looks pretty awesome.
  • Palpatine 2.0 - Seems ok, but the design was just a bit too genericy evil. Do all of his race look so evil?
  • Luke - Has he just been hanging out on that hill the whole time? I half thought it'd be a sad twist if he was a ghost. They need SOME reason why he was trapped there; the idea that he abandoned everything (and his kid) because he was a bit disolusioned is embarrassing.

I know there's more negative than good in point by point basis, but it was a great movie still. I'm just nitpicky

He was a Stormtrooper because he was taken and raised to be one. He didn't sign up voluntarily.
