Paramount Pictures has hired Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspect, upcoming The Tourist, Jack the Giant Killer and Wolverine 2) to rework the thriller One Shot, with an eye to direct.

The project is based on a series of novels written by Lee Child that center on Jack Reacher. "One Shot" is the ninth book in the series and is described as follows:

Jack Reacher is working on his tan with a Norwegian blonde on the beach in Miami. The weather is hot and he is so cool you could skate on him. But he doesn't like to stick around. He likes to be on the move. He was in the machine his whole life. Then the machine coughed and spat him out. Now he takes it easy. He's not looking for trouble. But sometimes trouble looks for Reacher.

A lone gunman hides in a parking garage and shoots into a crowd in a public plaza in a small Indiana city. Five random people die in a senseless massacre. The shooter leaves a perfect trail behind him and the police quickly track him down. His name is James Barr. It's a watertight case. After his arrest, James Barr refuses to talk. Then, to his lawyer, he utters a single phrase: "Get Jack Reacher for me." But Reacher's already on his way. What could connect this obvious psychopath with our wandering ex-army cop?

By the time Reacher hits town, Barr's been beaten badly enough to forget everything about the day in question. So Reacher begins to piece together the wealth of evidence; he does the math and comes to a few conclusions of his own.

Josh Olsen wrote the original script for the project, to be produced by Cruise/Wagner Productions.

i cant think of a better book for them to try an lauch a Jack Reacher franchise. I hope they dont screw with most of the story. Its actually a great book IMO and should be easy to bring it to the screen.

never read book/s but from what i hear physically cruise is way off since i hear jack is like 6'5 and kind of a brute

wow, love Tom but he is just in no way big enough to be Reacher, just very poor casting is this actually is true.

One Shot Actress Short List Revealed

Source: The Hollywood Reporter
August 13, 2011

Hayley Atwell, Alexa Davalos and Rosamund Pike are said to be the three names on the short list for playing the female lead in Christopher McQuarrie's One Shot. The Hollywood Reporter has the news, saying that a decision could be reached sometime this weekend.

The film, which has Tom Cruise attached as Jack Reacher, is based on the series of novels by Lee Child, which focuses on that character. "One Shot" is the ninth book in the series and is described as follows:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.

Atwell is fresh off the success of Captain America: The First Avenger, where she starred as Peggy Carter. Davalos recently played Andromeda in 2010's Clash of the Titans, a role that Pike, oddly enough, will take over for next year's sequel, Wrath of the Titans.

McQuarrie, who previously directed The Way of the Gun, co-wrote the screenplay for Valkyrie, which Cruise starred in.

is'nt this movie already a fail ?

seeing how reacher is 6'5 and they go and cast Tom Cruise lol not ot mention Reacher is a Former United States Army Military Police Major.

Did you guys see the host of Cash Cab on Leno auditioning for the role?

All three actresses are terrific. I'm going to go with Pike though, she comes off as more world weary than Atwell and Davalos and I think that's a quality that would make for better chemistry with Cruise himself.

Not to mention, she's the oldest of the bunch, and the only one with a less than twenty year age gap between her and Cruise. I'm not a huge fan of May-December romances.

I don't think the character is a love interest from what I've read of the book, she's a reporter who tags along with Reacher to try and get a big story.

In that case, Pike still strikes me as the most tenacious and world weary. If they want fresh faced, Atwell and Davalos will ace it.

In any case, we're gonna win, regardless who gets cast. Because they're all fantastic.

EXCLUSIVE: Rosamund Pike is negotiating for the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the bestselling Lee Child novel series for Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions. Pike was among a small group of actresses vying for the role. The British actress played Andromeda in Clash of the Titans 2, and she recently wrapped the David Frankel-directed The Big Year opposite Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin, and the Rowan Atkinson comedy Johnny English Reborn. Cruise is playing Jack Reacher, the retired military policeman who wanders the country with only his passport, bankbook, toothbrush and the clothes on his back. He finds his way into scrapes, taking the side of the underdog. In One Shot, Reacher investigates a case in which a lone sniper murders five victims before being captured. Reacher discovers it's more than a simple open-and-shut case.
Pike will play Helen Rodin, a local defense attorney defending the man arrested for the shootings. She works with Reacher to bring the true culprits to justice. Don Granger and Cruise will produce through Mutual Film Company and C/W Productions. Skydance's David Ellison and Dana Goldberg are producing as is Gary Levinsohn and Paula Wagner, and Ken Kamins is exec producer. UTA reps Pike with Shelly Browning and UK-based Dallas Smith.

The fact that they're getting a great cast, with a talented writer/director really makes it a rough deal that I'm still going to try to avoid this at all costs. Tom Cruise is absolutely the worst possible choice to play the character.

Werner Herzog will play the villain. I repeat. Werner. Herzog. :D

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/10/04/werner-herzog-tom-cruise-jack-reacher/

Werner Herzog will play the villain in Tom Cruise’s in-the-works Paramount thriller One Shot, EW has confirmed. The eccentric German auteur will play a character named The Zec, an ex-prisoner of war that first came to life in one of Lee Child’s bestselling Jack Reacher novels, according to Variety, which first reported the story.

The movie also stars Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and Robert Duvall, and will be directed by The Usual Suspects writer Christopher McQuarrie. While Herzog may be a relative newbie when it comes to acting in front of the camera, playing a creepy villain opposite Cruise seems like a natural fit thanks to the auteur’s idiosyncratic, slightly off persona, which was recently put to good use as a guest voice on The Simpsons. Herzog is best known for such feature films as 1982′s Fitzcarraldo and 2006′s Rescue Dawn, starring Christian Bale. His documentaries, in which he often plays a part of the narrative, include 2005′s Grizzly Man and this summers’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

Wernog ****ing Herzog?! Hell yeah!

The best WTF? casting news I've heard for a long time so yep, I'm sold. Who knew he was interested in a Tom Cruise movie? Crazy.

Well that's one way to change my opinion about wanting to see a movie.

Well, I just went from "don't give a ****" to "I'll be at the midnight screening."

David Oyelowo, Richard Jenkins, Alexia Fast and Joseph Sikora have joined the cast.

Oyelowo is playing a detective investigating the case alongside Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher and Rosamund Pike's Helen Rodin.

Jenkins is playing the District Attorney overseeing the case.

Alexia Fast is playing a woman called Sandy, connected to Reacher's past and the mystery at hand.

And Sikora is playing James Barr, the sniper.
