The Essential James Bond films:

Dr. No

From Russia With Love

Goldfinger

Thunderball

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

For Your Eyes Only

License To Kill

Goldeneye

The World Is Not Enough

Casino Royale

I understand the rest, especially the ones involving Bonds wife, and his origin, but how are the bolded ones essential?

Yeah, man, like Goldfinger and FRWL are the ones I tell people to watch first.

How is Goldfinger and FRWL not essential? They're considered the two best Bond films! :yay:

I'll give you The World is not Enough...

...but the others...really...REALLY!

...:wow:...

Personally you can go either way with Thunderball. Its a great Bond film but I wouldn't exactly call it essential.

And I'm iffy on FYEO, but The Spy Who Loved me is more essential than FYEO.

LOL at Goldfinger and FRWL not being essential.

O.k, maybe Blackheart needs to specify what he means by essential. Essential in my eyes means, essential to the franchise and Bond as a character. CR was essential because it showed his origin. FYEO and OHMSS dealt with the death of his wife, and him finally killing Bloefeld. LTK dealt with his relationship with Leiter......maybe by essential you guys mean, the best in the series to watch...?

A small sidenote: On 8th May it will be 50 years since Dr. No was released in USA. :)

Another note. The new Bond novel by Boyd is gonna be released as 'Solo.' Like the last book by Deaver it also centers on Africa. Damn I hope this one is better than the last one.

Eh, the whole set up with Felix and his wife was kind of weak in its execution to me. Plus the shark stuff was cheesy. I actually preferred QOS's revenge story. Because it at least had Vesper's death from CR to go from.

There may be cheesy moments in LTK (I actually believe there are very few of them) but the shark thing is far from being one IMO. There is nothing cheesy about a ruthless South American drug dealer hanging you to a shark to send a message (instead of outright killing you). It also helps how straight Robert Davi plays the part of Sanchez, you know in a scene like that he could've easily gone over the top but he was great in it just as he was in the rest of the film.

Also, the first time I saw LTK I remeber that for me it was kind of a weird change in tone, from the PTS which is all triumphant and heroic and just after that Della's murder (and implied rape) and Felix's shark thing happens. At the time the contrast kinda surprised me, it went very grim almost as soon as the title song was over.

I must say that I am of the camp that believes LTK handled the whole revenge theme way beter than QOS, I mean, so what if it involves Vesper? It doesn't even dig into that very much, one just know is about that but after the set up in Casino I believe the revenge plot on QOS fell flat to its true potential. At least LTK went all the way with it, and Dalton is as great in it as Craig is IMO.

Yeah that was part of my disappointment with QoS. There was a big deal about it being a direct sequel, but it pretty much went it's own way. Originally there was going to be more to the search for Vesper's boyfriend.

Rewatched Casino Royale tonight for the first time since I saw it in theaters in 2006.

I think when I saw it back then I went into the movie expecting more of what I would consider to be a traditional Bond movie and the series was coming off what I considered disappointments in Die Another Day and The World is Not Enough.

I really didn't know what to think of the movie when I saw it for the first time. I had a mixed reaction and didn't really feel like it was a proper Bond movie. I had a similar reaction to Daniel Craig as well, despite the fact that I really like Craig as an actor.

I remember seeing the many positive reactions to the movie online and being puzzled. At best I thought the movie was okay, but nothing really special.

Since then I've developed a better appreciation for On Her Majesty's Secret Service and decided to give Casino Royale another chance, but never went out of my way to check it out again.

Buying the Bond 50 blu-ray set gave me that chance. I am watching them all in order and ironically I actually put off watching Casino Royale the longest.

Finally getting around to it tonight, I have completely changed my mind. Everything seemed to just click and I loved it. The movie jumped into my top 5 favorite Bond movies.

Probably #4, it is hard to beat OHMSS, Goldfinger, and From Russia with Love.

Glad you've found a new appreciation for CR. It's a great movie. Your top 5 is quite commendable. Very similar to my own.

This Thread is to discuss all things James Bond. 1st Bond film you saw in a theater, your favorite Bond movie, Bond Girl, Henchmen, books, anecdotes etc... I'll start.

The 1st Bond movie I saw in the theater was a rerelease of From Russia With Love, still to this day one of my favorite Bond films (and my favorite Henchman, Robert Shaw/Red Grant.)
And even though I now prefer Daniel Craig, I still love Sean Connery and also Roger Moore who made a couple great ones too.
My favorite Connery anecdote is when he was asked in a talk show who the greatest Bond Villain was and answered: "Albert Broccoli."

Didn't know, I asked and Hunter Rider told me to start one because there was none, but please lock or merge, thank you.
