January 2012 Solicitations

All right, let's do this.......

- Avengers Academy #24. I don't like the idea of a new White Tiger because I liked the one Brubaker created in DD but whatevs. Tom Grummett is a terrific artist and I'm happy to see him come aboard. I feel good about this book being around longer.

- Captain America #7. I'm happy to see Steve and the Falcon fighting side by side again. As for the cover, so much for the permanent crack in the shield from Fear Itself #7. It's already been ignored by artists like it should be.

- Journey into Mystery #633. The more I read stuff with Son of Satan, the bigger fan I become. I'm looking forward to him mixing it up with Kid Loki, one of the few Fraction-bred ideas I really like. Gotta give credit where credit is due (even if the guy is a d**k).

- Avengers #21. Storm being an Avenger = STUPID. No intention of getting this.

- New Avengers #20. Why doesn't Jessica Jones have a costume yet? Pretty lame considering the NA promos from over a year ago had her in the Jewel costume.

- Avengers Solo #4. Avengers Academy vs West Coast Avengers? I wonder how that's going to work out? Most of the well known WCA folks aren't around (Wanda, Vision I, Simon.....) Whatever, I'm in.

- Avengers Annual #1. No interest in this whatsoever. The Revengers concept makes no sense when Bendis is bringing back the Dark Avengers in the same ongoing title. Bendis clearly has run out of ideas.

- Venom #12. Toxin fans (all 4 of them:cwink:) seem like they're getting their wish. That and the debut of Scarlet Spider in a new solo book, Marvel seems ready to bring back a lot of stuff from the Clone days. How long before a 15 year old redhead shows up at Pete's door calling him dad and asking him for $50 bucks?

- Alpha Flight #8. Wait, I thought this was announced as an ongoing? Did they reverse the decision? Bummer.....

- Wolverine & the X-Men #4. What the hell is up with all of those Nightcrawlers? Reminds me of Here Comes Tomorrow. I wonder if it's related.

- Uncanny X-Force #20. Fantomex in chains.....interesting to see what that's for. Killing kid Apocalypse or something else....?

- PunisherMAX #21. Well, it doesn't say final issue so I guess that's a good sign. I don't want the ride to end.

- DeadpoolMAX #4. Crazy Inez is awesome! Such a great character.

Umm Toxin (the "son" of Carnage) is more recent and had nothing to do with the Clone Saga...and I think there are more than 4 of us fans of him out there.

Man, January is blowing up my wallet. I've let my spending get out of control very quickly so I need to reign it in before it gets too far. Marvel's killing me again with double shippings, minis, ongoings, and point ones. It's annoying.

My biggest hit, as always comes from the X-Men Universe. If I weren't such a huge X-Men fan I could save bundles of money. Besides Wolverine & the X-Men, X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Uncanny X-Force, New Mutants, and X-23... there's also two .1 issues in the X-Men world this month - plus Magneto: Not a Hero, Wolverine & the X-Men: Alpha & Omega, and Avengers: X-Sanction. I'd pass that last one up if I were just into Avengers but it's my X-Men side that's pulling me in. Add all of those together and that's a major part of my list.

I'm going to be paying attention though because once Regenesis gets going, if I lose interest in a book I'm going to start dropping things left and right. I'm tired of buying X-Men for the sake of buying. I've dropped Astonishing X-Men and X-Factor and I'm willing to go further than that. New Mutants & X-Men... I'm looking at you!

Oh but how awesome is it that Joseph is coming back in Magneto: Not a Good Guy?! :awesome:

Avengers and New Avengers look good as usual. The Avengers Annual will likely not be worth the money but I liked the New Avengers Annual that told the first part to this story and I'll likely enjoy this one, too.

Now for my maybes....

Now I'm enjoying Daredevil but the idea of having to pay an additional $4 for his story in a month... and that $4 coming from Amazing Spider-Man... annoys the crap out of me. That one crossover has me seriously debating on dropping the book again. I just buy way too much and that'd save me $7 on the month. Chances are I'll get it because the series is just way too good to drop because of one crossover but I'm not liking it!

I've only bought Black Panther for two issues but this war with Kingpin plot really has my interest. I plan on sticking with it through that arc but with how high my spending is this month it might be smarter for me to cut and run before the arc really even starts. I'll debate on it.

I've not bought Fantastic Four since the first two issues of FF (and for years prior to that). I dropped it during a previous big dropping spree but this plot really has me interested. If this Galactus/Kree/Annihilus plot is a new starting point that doesn't require previous reading (like Hickman usually does) then I might consider it. I like all the cosmic angles but I don't feel like coming in mid-story... and if I'm not mistaken the first part of this is a $7 issue and I won't spend that kind of money on a book I'm not even sure I want to continue. We'll see.

I've dropped Daken but I love the Runaways. I've been planning on continuing Daken only for their arc and then stopping. I've sold his previous issues and am cool with being done, but those darn Runaways keep me from stopping completely. I'll get the book for them most likely but with this budget I may be forced to pass on this. I don't know.

The last newer things of interest are Battle Scars and Secret Avengers 21.1. With how much my budget is blowing up I think I'll likely be passing on Battle Scars now. I was curious and liked that Quake was in it but I need to trim the buying and that's a mini I'm not needing. Plus I still hate the idea of picking up any Fear Itself aftermath. As for Secret Avengers... I love Remender. He does a good job on most that he works on and I like his potential line up for the team so I might consider at least getting this .1 issue for $3 to give it a fair chance. If the month weren't so price heavy it'd be a definate, but now I'll likely skim it first before deciding.

So yeah... the majority of my costs for January are coming from Marven, and specifically the X-Men. There's room to cut from Marvel but I'll likely also cut from my DC list. I'm not sure how yet but it'll happen. It has to.

Umm Toxin (the "son" of Carnage) is more recent and had nothing to do with the Clone Saga...and I think there are more than 4 of us fans of him out there.

By Clone Days I meant the mid 90's Spider-Man stories. I thought he was from Planet of the Symbiotes in 95. I never read that so I had no idea he was introduced in 2004.

I hope the love triangle in the Daredevil/Amazing Spider-Man crossover isn't what it appears to be at face value. I really don't care that much at all for Black Cat as a love interest of Matt's. It's just that it has absolutely no chance of lasting long term, and while I know few relationships in comic books do, at least humor me here, guys. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the speculation from early on that Michelle Gonzales was going to be Matt's new love interest somehow manages to pan out instead.

I'm sort of the odd man out when it comes to Daredevil's love life, though, it seems. I'm still bitter to this day over Karen Page's death, I actually liked Milla Donovan quite a bit, and I was rooting extremely hard for the Dakota North relationship to work out (and, in fact, I'm still clinging on to a small shred of hope that Waid brings her back into the fold someday).

The Daredevil/Spiderman crossover sounds nifty. Can't wait for that. Francesco Francavilla on Cap & Bucky still looks and sounds very cool.

PunisherMAX #21 is gonna be insane.

Michael Lark on The Punisher....score. Oh. What's that? Daredevil's in that too? Win.

He had his own mini that was a sequel to the Venom vs Carnage mini. Both minis had some good art and some pretty good stories. I've always felt Toxin and Hybrid were under rated.

Rants/Thoughts ahoy!

- I have little interest in THE FEARLESS, but I admit BATTLE SCARS may be something I may get. It's shorter, features a new character, and apparently has Taskmaster and Paladin in it. Sure, Fraction is co-writing it, but Yost and Bunn may keep it decent.

- I think this makes two issues of CAPTAIN AMERICA with Alan Davis credited as interior artist. Is he taking over, or is this just a fill-in stint while McNiven gets more lead in time? At any rate, looks good.

- THE MIGHTY THOR seems to imply that death doesn't mean the lack of stories for Thor. But, seriously, anyone who thinks he'll be dead past May 2012 probably needs to learn more about synergy. Marvel couldn't even keep Cable dead a year, and he isn't appearing in a movie. EVER.

- Still very iffy on DEFENDERS. I like the team, and Iron Fist, but Fraction's quality has gone very downhill for me to trust him on a $3.99 an issue series. Terry Dodson hasn't been capable of drawing more than 3 issues of an ongoing series for years, so I wonder who the fill in will be. It seems this launch is an excuse to publish some FROM THE VAULTS Defenders material and even a Handbook.

- So, Storm is joining AVENGERS? Nothing too original - she was a member of MARVEL ADVENTURES AVENGERS for years. And Bendis will likely do what he always does; make a big deal of a new member joining, and then do nothing with them for ages. Seriously, so much was made of DD joining NEW AVENGERS, and the next issue he wasn't even THERE.

- I left SECRET AVENGERS behind and didn't miss it, but that #21.1 issue with Remender and Zircher will be tempting. Apparently, .1 issues are not just excuses for annuals, but extra promotional issues to sell a new creative team. Fine, but then the regular issue is a buck more.

- Yikes, AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE limps into 2012. That's 2 months behind schedule for a bi-monthly schedule, FYI. I bet Scott Lang dies again.

- John Carter suddenly has two comics. Since when was he popular again? Does this mean he'll have a team-up with Deadpool?

- SCARLET SPIDER #1 being 40 pages for $3.99 isn't bad, although does this mean 20 pages will be reprints or Handbook material? Yes, Marvel's made me that cynical. Without repeating myself, regardless who he is - and I have my theories - I wonder what purpose this serves. We no longer need a single Spider-Man Lite who focuses more on a superhero life, thanks to OMD/BND/OMT/BIG TIME. Sure, VENOM is doing well as an ASM spin off - but SPIDER-GIRL and WEB OF SPIDER-MAN tanked, and we have AVENGING SPIDER-MAN coming too. It risks being a useless family title, that too many DC books have.

- Joe Mad drawing 3 monthly issues of something on time? I'll believe it when I see it.

- It seems Mark Waid will take over for Slott for an ASM issues, same as Christos Gage did. Looks to be a fun crossover for once.

- VENOM hits a 12th issue, and Toxin comes back. I wonder if Hybrid will come back too?

- ALPHA FLIGHT began as an 8 issue mini. Marvel orgasm'd when issue one sold in the Top 20 and made it an ongoing. Then, seeing subsequent issue sales, it is back as an 8 issue mini. Oh, Marvel. Never change.

- We'll soon have two Hickman FF titles, and I am not sure I feel up to that.

- THUNDERBOLTS is double shipping again. It seems the status quo will be the escaped cons travel through time as Luke, Ghost, and Songbird chase them. Interesting for now, but it could ware thin.

- STRIKEFORCE: MORITURI is a bizarre thing to reprint all of a sudden. It was ahead of it's time, but been lost for ages. There was talk of it becoming a TV show years ago - with Loeb on TV, is it coming true?

- Naturally aboard VILLAINS FOR HIRE, which will wrap up "DnA" 's material on H4H. I still say it would have done better to use villains who actually do work as mercs as a stable cast, like Taskmaster or Batroc, but whatever.

- Brian Wood returns to comics after years of exile to do...a spare WOLVERINE mini series. Sigh.

- Cluggernaut still looks ungodly stupid. Cosplay doesn't work for superheroes.

- Christos Gage joining X-MEN LEGACY suddenly makes it a tempting buy. I do like Rogue and Iceman, and he does write good comics. I've never read anything from him yet that was below average, and most of his stuff is good to great. But, his ASTONISHING X-MEN debut was one of those average ones - although for $3.99, my quality bar was higher. I haven't read an X-Men title in a while and expect to be rather lost, even with a .1 issue. But, we'll see how things are in Jan. 2012.

- I love how X-CLUB, the book about the scientists and smart people of the X-Men, still has to have a cover in which Emma Frost shoves her ass at the reader. Yep, brains sell, people!

Really nothing there gets me excited. Boy Marvel is in a creative slump.

When is the Bendis/ Bagely Avengers Assemble book coming out?

No cosmic books, save FF , which I have little interest in.

Storm on Avengers?, man they just don't get it. Another character that will never be developed.

I won't support T-bolts until Luke Cage is removed, nothing will happen in the book with him there.

Brian Wood hasn't been in exile. He's been writing plenty of stuff over at DC, including his about-to-end Vertigo series DMZ. So it doesn't sound like you're much of a fan anyway :o

When is the Bendis/ Bagely Avengers Assemble book coming out?

I think that they said March.

As for the solicits I'll be getting my usual suspects from Marvel. Very happy to see that Emma Rios will be doing the artwork on # 677 with Mark Waid for the Daredevil crossover. I'll be looking forward to that.

Of course, being a HUGE Clone Saga and Ben Reilly fan I'll be sucking up Scarlet Spider # 1 the second it hits the shelf. And Ryan Stegman artwork to boot? Yeah, it's gonna be awesome. And like Dread I'm a bit apprehensive about the 40 pages and half of them being Clone Saga reprints that I already have.

Punisher, Moon Knight, FF...all look to be continuing good stuff but this month looks to be more about Scarlet Spider to me!

Also, that variant cover for Ultimate Spider-Man # 6 by Bagley looks amazing and so does the Kaare Andrews one with Miles on it. Now if only we'd see Miles in the costume in the INTERIORS it would be lovely but alas I forget that it's Bendis writing this. :oldrazz:

Exile from Marvel, at least. :o

I see. I figured it was some sort of multi-media project. Why else dive into the reprint dumps for a series - while ahead of it's time back in the day - nobody demanded to see reprinted?

I mean, people have actively demanded to clean up rights issues to see reprints of, say, ROM or MICRONAUTS material, but you don't see Marvel/Disney busting any chops about that, right? Yet if one or both were about to become a TV show or movie...

The issues with ROM and Micronaughts are bigger than Marvel, some greedy people involved there.

The issues with ROM and Micronaughts are bigger than Marvel, some greedy people involved there.

Disney threw $114 million at Paramount to get the distribution rights for "THE AVENGERS" and "IRON MAN 3". If ROM or MICRONAUTS were on the verge of a similar Hollywood payday, I could imagine some sum being thrown about for reprint rights.

But, yes, it often makes no logic. The ROM toy is long since defunct and clinging to the rights is self-defeating. Hell, the re-release of those trades could allow a new version of the toy to sell for nostalgia value. :p

Incredible Hulk 4 is in if I'm liking Aaron's run by then.

New Avengers 20 I only want to see Osborn's team in action. Otherwise, I'm banning all fake-Avengers titles.

Venom 12 is bringing back Toxin. No surprise :o Its the child of Carnage and Carnage recently had another kid, so you knew Toxin would be brought back up, and Carnage is running lose over the USA. I am surprised that he's coming back 1st in Venom. Maybe he'll die here...:hrt:

Avengers Annual 1 I only want to see how Bendis continues to f*&% over Anti-Venom. This may be the last time I get to see AV and it had to be Bendis behind him :cmad:

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man I'm done with. Screw you, Bendis, I'm not doing this no more...

Scarlet Spider 1 Is a MUST. I'm on pins and needles, especially if its NOT Ben Reilly (read: It's not :awesome:)

Carnage USA 2...eh...I'm obligated, so I know I'm picking this one up, regardless of my lack of enthusiasm. Carnage never did it for me like Venom (Eddie or Flash), and since Zeb Wells previous Carnage story left no impression on me, I'm really not amped up for this. Plus, they may bring that unnecessary new symbiote Scorn back (ehhh...), Toxin may come back for this one too (meh...) and we know a lot of characters get symbiotes in this one (ever wanted to see a Carnage-Wolverine, Carnage-Thing, and Carnage-Cap? Me neither)...

Alpha Flight 8 ends. And I die a little. It'll probably be another 5 years before they come back headlining their own series...

Legion of Monsters 4...wait, that means there's a LoM 1 thru 3...Why didn't I know about this series?

Hulk 47 I'll pick up for the Rulk/RSHulk confrontation.

Wolverine 300...What on Earth?! 1st it was Wolverine 900, then Wolverine 1000, then Wolverine issues 1-10-ish, now its Wolverine 300?! Goddammit, Marvel...

I was hoping for a Venom (Flash) Volume 2 TPB after his 1st one recollected Venom (Flash) issues 1-5, and I was expecting the 2nd volume to collect issues 6-8. But if these issues are being released in a Spider-Island TPB, we most likely won't be seeing another Venom TPB with these stories, which sucks.

Scarlet Spider #1: I dont really see a point to having a scarlet spider book if its NOT Ben Reilly, not to sound negative but this book is gonna tank in sales just like Spider-Girl and the other Spider spin offs.

Ultimate Spiderman #6: wait so....PETER's BACK?!

Daredevil #8: Who the f*** is KANO and why aren't Paulo Rivera or Marcos Martin drawing this issue?!?!?

The Punisher # 7: Michael Lark+Punisher+daredevil= F*** YEAH!!

Incredible Hulk #4: I'm intrigued by this book, but Whilce Portacio on art...eh...did Silvestri back out already?

Wolverine #900: Oh Marvel...you so crazy.

Wolverine 300...What on Earth?! 1st it was Wolverine 900, then Wolverine 1000, then Wolverine issues 1-10-ish, now its Wolverine 300?! Goddammit, Marvel...

It's Marvel "properly" renumbering Wolverine: 189 issues of the first Wolverine ongoing + 74 issues of the second Wolverine ongoing + 20 issues of the third Wolverine ongoing + 16 issues of Wolverine: Weapon X = 299 issues of Wolverine total leading up to Wolverine #300. Kinda sucks that I have to do some rearranging in my Wolverine comics.

Not counted in the tally are the first Wolverine series which was the iconic 4 issue miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller and Dark Wolverine #75 - 90.

Silvestri likely can't handle a monthly format for long.

For the record, this is WOLVERINE #300. Which is awkward since Marvel have already sold a WOLVERINE #900 one shot, and a WOLVERINE #1000 one shot. So, issue numbers mean whatever Marvel wants them to mean at the moment. They could relaunch U.S. ONE and give it issue #178.1A if they wanted, and Tom Bevoort would give some windbag speech to CBR justifying it.

I really don't consider it awkward. Wolverine #900 and Wolverine #1,000 were just mere one shots. Wolverine #300 seems to be a bit more legitimate than those two. Although it's really irritating to have Marvel constantly renumber their books and cancel them all while waiting for the inevitable re-renumbering.
