Japan issues tsunami warning after magnitude 8.3 earthquake

TOKYO - Japan's Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings Saturday following a magnitude 8.3 earthquake in the Pacific Ocean.

The agency says a 3.3-foot-high tsunami could hit the northeastern coast of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido around 2 p.m. (12 a.m. EST).

Pretty much, 8.3 is verrry high on the Richter scale.

Yeah, I don't see how a 8.3 earthquake could only trigger a 3.3-foot-high wave.

The inital wave would be much larger. 3.3 feet (unless a misprint) is the height at impact which is most likely a very long way from the origin.
