WARNING: THE FOLLOWING POST CONTAINS A STATEMENT OF OPINION, BASED ON SUBJECTIVE PERCEPTION.

At the risk of rekindling the Ledger/Leto war, I have to say that IN MY OPINION* tattooed permawhite skin beats smeary face paint every day of the week.

*THIS IS A STATEMENT OF PERSONAL PREFERENCE, AND NOT A CONTENTION OF OBJECTIVE FACT. NO LENGTHY REBUTTAL IS REQUIRED.

These make me feel safer too. As everyone should know - A boss eyed, cross eyed clown, is a friendly clown

I never felt any attachment to perma-white skin or face paint... The only concern for me at this point - I'm yet to see a "CLOWN prince of crime". Not just a rock star. All previous jokers had this clown aesthetics in their outfits, but I don't see it in LeJo at this point. It's not critical, but I need to see him wearing full costume.

Does the Joker conventionally wear a circus clown's costume? I'm not sure he does. He certainly favours purple, and some eccentric cuts of suit, but he is rarely seen in foot-long shoes of oversized trousers. Nicholson's Joker came closest to that, while Ledger's went for a more vintage look.

I think, overall, the aesthetic has evolved away from pure clownishness, though it is still central to the underlying theme. For Suicide Squad, this may also reflect The Joker's role as one half of a dark love story.

I feel the same way, though I have come to appreciate and enjoy the Ledger aesthetic as a self-contained interpretation. I'm just glad they didn't start ape-ing it in the comic books. But I for one am happy to see the character return to form as far as the white skin is concerned, and I'm especially thrilled that we've finally moved on from the permanent smile.

Are the tattoos and metal grillz something I would have done? Not at all. But this is a character well known for his eccentricity, self-awareness, and tackiness. These qualities usually take form in colorful costumes and gimmicky crimes/weapons. Tattoos and metal teeth simply push the envelope a bit further as far as manifesting these qualities through a 21st century lens.

Completely agreed. The aesthetic is much more satisfying this time around.

The only designs I find worse than the tattoo grills Letoker is The Batman cartoon version, and the Death of the Family Leatherface version. In both of those versions you could apply the same reasoning of eccentricity, self-awareness, and tackiness for their ugly design choices.

But it still makes them an eyesore to look at.

He doesn't. But he was called "clown prince of crime" for a reason, right? Not to mention, "joker".
Of course. But these are clowns too:

And previous jokers, live action, comic books and animated, aren't far from this.
See? Still there's a clown somewhere in their suits.
Whatever it is, I hope the clown part stay, even if they decided to change the classy element for modern him-hop or rock star image. Or is it opposite - the clown is gone?

Funnily enough, that is one of my favourite versions of The Joker both in terms of characterisation and appearance. That version of The Joker gives off the impression that there is no limits to what he will do and is more evil rather than crazy and random.

I think "random and crazy" is the the mask the Joker hides behind.

Sort of like how the Ledger Joker tried to make it out like he was just another unhinged wacko when he was really a nihilist with a philosophy and plans.

That's why I hope Leto's Joker gives us more than just crazy for the sake of crazy. I'd like to see something behind that. Plenty of movies have psychopaths the Joker should be more.

Is it weird that I found a tumblr blog titled Harley Quinn that ships the SS Joker with Shrek?

As far as the Death of the Family Joker is concerned, that just pushed him too far into heightened fantasy territory. He cuts off his face and straps it right back on, yet inexplicably does not die from shock, pain, or infection from either the open wounds or the rotting flesh on his face. He's able to speak without impediment, despite not having lips. He blinks despite not having eyelids, and he's able to make facial expressions despite the severe amount of trauma his facial muscles had experienced. It was simply too far out there for me, even by comic book standards.

Having facial tattoos is a far cry from cutting off one's own face and wearing the flesh like a mask. They're not even in the same ball park as far as visual concepts.

How long did he supposedly spend without any face at all before he sneaked it back out of GCPD's evidence room?

It was a creepy idea, but not very convincing really.
