Jared Leto IS The Joker - Part 9

My problem with the Leto Joker is it feels like a cheap attempt to replicate Ledger. Its like the filmmakers are trying to go "dark and gritty and mature," and it just feels like they are trying too damn hard. Even his voice in the bits of dialogue we've heard sound like a Ledger imitation. I can't help but get a Poochie the Dog vibe off of this Joker. I am waiting for Harley Quinn to tell us "Joker is one outrageous dude. He's totally in your face."

I wouldn't call him 'gritty'. He's dark sure, but that's the way jokers always been. It's an important character trait for him.
I can see just a WHOLE different range from Letos 5 second clip that wasn't present for Ledger. For one, why don't you think about how many times ledger actually smiled as the joker. When I think about ledgers joker I don't picture him smiling. Leto seems like he can't help but smile, and that smile alone makes him diffrent. Very toothy and wide, the grill helps accentuate his teeth and therefore his smile which is an important thing about joker to highlight.
The on the nose tattoos tell me he's a total goof ball in the way ledger was not. This joker seems like he wants to take the image of a classic Gotham 'thug' and make it his own parody.
Now his voice is a hard thing to judge since the clip of him is so short, but I emplore you to have another listen. Replay it over and over if you must to really gauge it. Compare it to a clip of ledgers voice and what you'll hear may sound ever so slightly similar, but it's the way it's delivered that's so different. Letos characterization is just so uniquely HIM. He speaks spastically, where as ledger was more slow and chilling.
Also consider that this is going to be the first joker (since Romero) that WONT have mouth make up on his cheeks. That's 100% legit Leto mouth.

If anything Nolan got his design from Bermejo.

Hmmmm i did not know that. I read JOKER when it released some time after TDK and have always figured that, not having seen any of his other work. My mistake.

Pretty sure Bermejo got his design from Nolan

A lot of fans simply think Lee Bermejo's Joker design comes from Nolan due to DC Comics releasing the Joker OGN at the right moment to capitalize TDK's success.

Still one of the crappiest interpretations of the character.

"still the crappiest interpretation... that's why I give it a thumbs up!"

No, I don't think so. The dialogue written for either could just as well be interchanged with dialogue written for Nicholson, Hamill, or appearing in the comics. They are playing different interpretations of the same character, and the way that this is sometimes viewed with surprise is baffling.

As for this interpretations being "cheap" (it certainly isn't a replication), again, I think you're wrong. It would have been cheap to have essentially recast the very same interpretation, or else simply cosplay what appears in the comics. Taking a new approach is much riskier, but potentially also more interesting.

I can't think of one that is crappier, personally.*

*Not including the New 52, because that doesn't exist.

Best Joker ever :o

I still need to see more to judge the performance (I already know I hate the look) but I think Leto will do great for what they are going for. The only question for me is "will I like their take on this character?"

Oh, Matt. You know you'd approve of this Joker if Matt Bomer or James Roday were playing him. :cwink:

Hahahaha :funny: gotta love how passionate angry fanboys are. I think some put more emotion and effort into hating on things over liking or enjoying them.

LOL, you're just discovering this? :cwink:

Seriously, I think the majority of fanboys out there feel like something must be wrong if they can't find something to hate about a movie.

Oh no trust me I've known this a long time. Just still amazes me sometimes haha. Yep you're right there's always got to be something for them to hate on. So much fun!

Yeah, it's like they can't just take a breather and think about something before getting outraged over it. I'm glad I only know a few fanboys who are like that in real life (and I never watch movies with them, Good God).

That would be brutal watching with one of them in person. Would completely ruin the whole movie experience. Can you imagine sitting next to someone like that during the film? Yikes, when they don't like something they have to bring everyone else down with them.

Apart from the Ledger like voice he's using, and the panda eyes, I don't see any other similarities.

Snap. Hate the design for the character. It's dreadful. One of the worst Joker designs ever. But I love the casting, and the acting I've seen so far. But I don't know yet if it's going to be enough to overlook that horrendous Joker design.

I must be the only one who can't hear anything 'Ledger-esque' in Leto's Joker voice?
