English actor Jason Statham (Crank, "The Transporter" films, The Italian Job) is in talks to star in the futuristic thriller Death Race.

The Universal Pictures project is a remake of Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000, which starred David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. It was set in a dystopian America in which the president presides over an ultraviolent road race from New York to Los Angeles. One of the ways that drivers score points is by mowing down innocent bystanders using their heavily armed cars.

Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil) is writing and directing the remake. A late summer/early fall start is being eyed.

Tom Cruise and his production partner, Paula Wagner, will produce.

Yay:dry:

While this sounds truely terrible, I did laugh at mowing down innocent bystanders. Nice to know the President puts population control as a top priority.

Oh God.
Paul W.S. Anderson..............

You know I love his top quality directing, but I love his writing even better.....

First Uwe Boll, now PWS Anderson. At least he is ascending though.

Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race remake has received a September 26, 2008 release date. Produced by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner, the futuristic thriller stars Jason Statham.

Maybe Cruise knocks some sense into Anderson, so he directs a good movie.

wow...of all films to remake....as much as i loved the original death race 2000 - i can't see it as a hollywood hit. just wondering if stathom is playing the "frankenstein" character or what.

it'd be cool to see him impersonate Sly, who, in the original, mumbled so incoherently i assumed at first his charcter didn't really have any lines, or if he did he must have been playing a foreign character who'd they'd forgotten to give subtitles too.

Wow, another chance for Statham to display his limitless range.

I don't know if I've I seen the original.
I know I saw a movie where they ran people over and got points are something, seemed very surreal.
I'd watch it......on DVD.

Personally, I thought the original was terrible. The fact that Anderson is now writing and directing just makes this an absolute avoid.

Comic-Con '07: Death Race Update!

Resident Evil: Extinction writer/producer Paul W.S. Anderson gave ShockTillYouDrop.com an update today at Comic-Con about his next project, Death Race at Universal Pictures.

The film is an update of producer Roger Corman's classic 1975 Death Race 2000 that featured Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.

The new version, starring Jason Statham, will be played as a straighter movie but will have a witty social commentary on reality TV. It won't be as campy as the original, said Anderson. Everyone is back - Frankenstein, Machine Gun Joe, etc. Anderson added it would be brutal, a very violent race to the death.

The Universal Pictures release begins shooting in four weeks for a September 26, 2008 release.

look, if you're remaking something like Casablanca, yeah, you dont get Paul Anderson or Jason Statham...but if you're remaking Death Race 2000, a f**king Roger Corman movie starting Sylvester Stallone, I think they'll do just fine...it's supposed to be hokey and shlocky, and other words ending in y :o

Good lord, what is Statham thinking working for idiots like Paul WS Anderson and Uwe Boll? Is he trying to kill his career? :o

BTW, Deathrace became one of the first controversial videogames. Stuck up parents were appalled by the fact that it was a game where you could kill people. So much so in fact, that the publisher later changed the game's literature to call the pedestrians "gremlins," rather than let us assume the little white pixel blobs were people.

Paul Anderson seems to be tied to video games at the ankle. :|

Gibson and Allen Enter Death Race

MTV reported this weekend that director Paul W.S. Anderson has signed Transformers star Tyrese Gibson and The Bourne Ultimatum star Joan Allen for Death Race, which starts filming in four weeks for a September 26, 2008 release.

The two join Jason Statham in the no-holds-barred, ultraviolent car race, set in 2020. The film is an update of producer Roger Corman's classic 1975 Death Race 2000 that featured Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.

Universal Pictures will distribute.

Jason Statham could be in any bad film and still could make it watchable.

I think the trailer will seal the deal for me.

But why remake a Roger Corman movie to begin with? Roger Corman movies rely so heavily on the time they were made in and just can't work in modern cinema.

alright so we have paul ws anderson, check. tyrese gibson, check. me, avoiding.

(and is it just me or does Statham look high in that first pic?)

Jason's being groomed as Frankestein, and tyrese gibso is being Sly's character....

I really want to watch the original now.
I was just a kid when I saw it and it was just so out there.
