Agreed. This was worst Lex Luthor yet.

Gene Hackman was campier though.. Jesse was pretty good, he was not the most comic book accurate Lex. But he was accurate to the young interpretations of the character.

I think Zack Snyder got confused and gave Eisenberg the script for The Riddler.

I'm sure he would have been praised since it's so cool now to love every character from Batman's comics and hate everyone from Superman's.

I agree with this. Was waiting to see that scene in the movie, would have been beautiful. Sadly, they didn't focus on the world or the public that much. Protesters and worshipers were there alright, but it would have been nice to see the public opinion on Lex too.

Anyway, about Lex. I really liked his character since behaviourally he was like nothing we'd seen before and actions wise he was pretty much the quintessential Lex who thankfully did not go down the road of real estate schemes lol.

After getting back from the movie, I actually realised how most of the movie is driven by him and his actions and that really makes him a great villain. You really don't see it or feel it much until the end of the movie when it's right in your face but he actually did like 6 things to take down Supes:

1. Try to frame Superman in Africa.

2. Unearth Kryptonite from the ocean and study it to make an anti-alien weapon.

3. Manipulate the Senator and when that didn't work..

4. Blow up the Senate to frame Superman again and to just mess with him

5. Manipulate Batman to fight him and when that didn't work..

6. Unleash Doomsday upon them.

So if you really think about it, from his actions he was the perfect Lex from the comics and animated series. I particularly loved [BLACKOUT]the moment he takes over the Kryptonian ship and tries to learn about the aliens and takes in the knowledge of 100k worlds. Classic Lex moment![/BLACKOUT]

I can really see an alliance between this Lex and Brainiac in the future, if that ever happens!

He was definitely a quirky Lex, more so than ever before, but I feel he will become more of the calm, collected, shrewd manipulator in the next movie. He definitely looks the part by the end of the movie, he just needs to evolve a bit from here to be the perfect Lex.

He has great lines about God being tribal and you can see how he truly hates someone like Superman and other meta humans because of his knowledge is power statement.

He is the most knowledgable yet his power doesn't compare to them which really pisses him off.

You know, in many comics Lex is not that different from most of other powerful criminal masterminds. It's obvious that Zack wanted to give a little twist to the character and make him more peculiar. I have no problem with it. I would have no problem if they made him different either. I just don't have the energy to be picky with everything. It's whatever. As long as it entertains me, i'm cool with it.

I totally agree. People need to look past his appearance and behaviour. His actions are perfect and classic Lex from the comics and animated series and other media.

Trying to make gods bow down before his evil genius, trying to learn all he can about other worlds and other alien races from Kryptonian archives, his superiority complex and xenophobia, manipulative villainy. All classic Lex Luthor.

Based on some of his quotes about "power", I think that he does not like the idea of someone as all-powerful as Superman existing. If that is the case, he contradicts it by creating and releasing Doomsday, who is more powerful than Superman, and much more unpredictable and destructive.

I was also confused by his "back-up plan" in that regard. I wonder if it has anything to do with him fearing another, bigger threat to be revealed in JL. If so, I must have missed it.

the being Luthor encounters is a recording of Braniac's origins?

The formation of the Mother Boxes that creature has before he dissipates look awfully similar to Braniac's symbol.

Is it possible that is Braniac prior to his transformation?

It would make sense, since Luthor's end goal is revealed to be ultimate knowledge and the power that comes with it, and he's seeing a cautionary tale of sorts.

Eisenberg's take on Lex was brilliant, and he will forever own the role for me.

I especially enjoyed the way he channeled Sheev Palpatine by manipulating things left and right, and very much knew that Superman was Clark and Batman was Bruce. It made the fight between the two characters all the more interesting for me knowing that he'd so deftly engineered it.

The only thing I wish they'd handled a little bit better with regards to his character and his characterization is that I wish they'd explained what the heck was going on with him and the Kryptonian ship AI when he started creating Doomsday, because that was just confusing as heck.

Eisenberg's take on Lex was brilliant, and he will forever own the role for me.

Heh, and I thought I might be the only one.

I might be biased, however, as I'd grown really quite bored with the Clancy Brown, Michael Rosenbaum-esque versions of the character that had been so incredibly popular for so long. And so I was more than ready to welcome a new interpretation to the fore. It just so happens that they presented me with a take on the character that I didn't even know I wanted.

It's a new take, so it was never destined to be an all round popular portrayal. I was both pleased and intrigued with the fact that they not only brought back the 'mad scientist' element that had been retired from the character for so long, but reconciled it with the corrupt CEO aspect that feels pretty much essential to the character nowadays. But more than that, I found the interpretation to be deeply layered. The performance, even more so. This portrayal of Luthor feels akin to a young Roman Emperor who's long since grown bored with his power, and as such, indulges in it to horrifying degrees for his amusement. He seems like someone who sees himself as an Alexander the Great type figure (owing somewhat due to the character's namesake, obviously), but in reality is a Caligula-like figure, distilled down to his utmost insanity and hedonism. I really enjoyed this take on the character and I think there's so much more to it than meets the eye.

I ended up being a little meh on Lex. I didn't hate the portrayal, but I think the whole thing played a little more wacky than I would've liked.
