Jim Henson Co. and Nicole Perlman to reboot Labyrinth

Wait a week and reannounce an already announced sequel?

Classy.

This feels really in bad taste so soon after Bowie's passing.

Bad idea. Nobody can really play the Goblin King except for Bowie.

Strike while the iron's hot. - Hollywood

But honestly I doubt Bowie himself would exactly give two ****s about them rebooting a role he's known for.

I say no. Labyrinth is fine.

I can't see another Goblin King. I can't see another misadventure of metaphorical puberty/responsibility/loss of childhood by anyone other than Connelly and Bowie. Just leave it alone. Think of something else. Sheez. Tons of fantasy out there that's pretty original and undone before. Go with that.

This probably has been in the works for a while

But really bad move to release/announce this so soon after Bowie's death

I remember when Labyrinth came out and didn't do all that well. It was hyped like crazy, mostly centered around Jim Henson's puppet creations for the movie. That was the main focus, not so much the story or the actors. The Dark Crystal had the same problem - the technical achievement seemed to be a lot more important than the actual story, which movie audiences thought was just OK.

I don't think the world really wants to see a reboot or anybody else doing the role.

Reboot? This wasn't a film series, was it?
They are planning a new take on the same story, that's what it is.

There an over-use of the word reboot these days. I mean, a new Ben-Hur, a new Oliver Twist or a new Around the world in 80 days, is NOT a reboot

It's funny as this week i have been wondering, how could they continue the story - simply because bowie was on my mind. I felt they should have done a sequel 10 years ago.

A dishevelled Goblin king, dusty and tatty pacing the labyrinth, bored, reaches out to her daughter this time, or something similar, i just felt the visuals could have been excellent.

An unknown needs to be cast, if anything as the title character, if not, old sherlock himself, Benedict would be my choice.

But, no... just no, too soon.

Labyrinth's Honest Trailer is hilarious.

Real talk, this is too soon since Bowie only died a week ago. But let's be honest, this isn't really a great movie anyway. Visually stunning for sure but not unworthy of a remake. This probably means it will come out, make no money, then fade into obscruity like the majority of 80s remakes do.

:o

Honestly, i think with some care and reworking of some elements, it has the opportunity to be great.

But i think the original has something that will make the reboot hard, kinda like the GB situation.

They'd have to take it in a different direction and really make it different for it to work. A film like that is a product of it's time. A plot with a dude trying to steal a baby with Disney-esque songs and goblins running around isn't going to work in 2017.

Sounds right up Disney's alley.

David Bowie wouldn't care, so he's not spinning in his grave, but I say leave it be. Think of other things. Take from books that've yet to be adapted.

This has apparently been in the works since 2014:

For many people, the phrase "Labyrinth remake" is enough to send a shiver down the spine. So when the news came that a new Labyrinth movie is actually in the works—just days after the death of David Bowie, no less—the public reaction was uniformly negative.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lisa Henson of the Henson Co. will produce the film, which will be written by Guardians of the Galaxy scribe Nicole Perlman.

In response to backlash from Labyrinth fans, Perlman tweeted that the new film wouldn't be a "reboot," adding that while the timing was bad, she had been discussing the film with the Henson Co. since 2014.

Not "rebooting" anything, guys.

Henson Co & I started talking in late 2014, so the timing of these rumors is so upsetting. I would never seek to profit from Bowie's death.

Labyrinth is my favorite film from childhood, so I share your concerns that any continuation of the world be handled with love and respect.

Even after these assurances, it's hard to get on board with the idea of a Labyrinth spinoff. The original's appeal resides in its unique weirdness: a kid-friendly muppet movie that doubles as a psychosexual drama, starring a bratty teenage girl and David Bowie in a mullet wig and a codpiece. Any attempt at a sequel (or spinoff, or whatever) seems doomed to disappointment, the ultimate product of Hollywood's relentless attempts to recapture old successes instead of thinking up something new.

Kneejerk reactions aside, the most charitable interpretation of this news is that the Henson Co. is working on a film inspired by the spirit of Labyrinth, not the characters and setting we know and love. The best-case scenario would be weird subversion of contemporary Hollywood trends, in the same way that Labyrinth was a product of the 1980s fantasy genre alongside The Princess Bride, Ladyhawke, The NeverEnding Story, and The Dark Crystal.

But among all this speculation, it's worth remembering that at the time, Labyrinth was a box office flop. The modern equivalent isn't going to come from the same source; it's more likely to be found elsewhere, in the self-indulgent fantasy world of Jupiter Ascending, or perhaps in the Polish mermaid musical The Lure, which just screened at Sundance. And if you're really jonesing for something that directly follows on from Labyrinth's fairytale setting, we already have Mirrormask and Pan's Labyrinth. Nicole Perlman and the Henson Co. have an uphill struggle ahead of them.
For me personally, I'm not too sure how I feel about this yet. I'm not willing to completely write it off. But I'll wait and see what/if anything comes of it and wait to hear more information

If it's not a reboot, then what is it? And even if it's not a reboot, why does that make it better? I'm confused.

Wouldn't this be considered a remake?

It's a direct sequel... a continuation of a story, in my mind a reboot is a remake. Switching it off, starting again.. that's a reboot.

Now... the term reboot is used so much now, but I prefer a jump start.

Either way, without Bowie, it'll be hard to watch.

From Dr. Strange to Labyrinth. They both have their merits so whatever.
