I've been laid off since January 12th, 2009. I came home, from school, for personal/family reasons - hoping, and slightly believing, that finding a job would be easy. In the beginning, I was correct.

I landed a job, roughly a month after I came home: Home - Augusta '08, Job - September '08.

So the job wasn't great, but it paid well and gave me an opportunity to return to school. It was a Mall job, Jewelry store, and as Christmas drew closer, my hours became more demanding.

I'm getting off topic - to the point:

I was let go on January 15th, 2009. Said job, upon hiring, told me that the placement was secure and this WAS NOT a seasonal hire. I performed well, and was told that after Christmas a promotion was in order. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year - you're fired.

Ok. Further.

I've been looking for a job since then. I had enough in savings and a loving mother, whom owns a personal business, that offered me side work to keep me afloat. The "afloat" was for me to look for proper work: desk job, decent pay, etc.

It's come to my attention, upon four months of looking, that NO ONE is hiring. I just got a "thanks, but no thanks" from Target - TARGET!! I can't even land a job as a cashier, at the age of 29 and a strong professional resume.

Why a thread?

Two reasons:

One - Is it that bad, where you live?

Two - I'm sick and tired of ads in the local paper, displaying prominent work, only to get one's personal information, so said companies can hound applicants with furthering one's education, via Internet Colleges.

WTF?! I need work, and their objective is to hound me with sales calls?

Rant over.

Best piece of advice I can give you: For the time being become a bartender. One thing it's fairly recession proof as when things get really bad or really good people drink, so it'll be around. Two you don't need experience (just lie and say you worked for a few years in a different state at some irish bar that closed down cause the owner wanted to retire, and you'll get them the owner's number [use a friend] if they need to verify), don't worry you can pick it up in a few days and any lack of experience will be attributed to you adjusting. Three, people talk to bartenders about everything. You'd be amazed how easy it is to get a job if you're friendly and listen to people. I got a job as a speach writer from being a bartender. And finally the schedule will allow you to continue looking for other jobs easily.

Yes, it's bad where I live.

Don't trust ads, check companies which post their own wanted sections.

However, I've down the waiter/bartender search, as well. Haven't lied - didn't think it was necessary for a waiter job. I thought getting my foot in the door, via a waiter, would help for cash flow, and to move up in the bar area.

I was wrong. Even the resturants are giving the "run around." I got an interview with Chili's, through the assistant, because of my background. The guy looked at me, saw a clean cut guy, agreed with my professional background, and said "you look like a good worker and a proffesional guy. I bet you can pick this up, easy. Come back, tomorrow, to meet the manger."

Yeah. . . asshats!!

I met the manager and he gave me three minutes, then said "you have no experience."

Chili's, Applebees, and such are like the McDonalds of sit-downs, in my area. THEY can't even give me a shot.

WTF?!

Lie, bartending is cake once you get into the flow. Go with what I said and you'll be golden. Right now it's damn near necessary.

Agreed.

I even have a bartender friend, whom would lie for me. I'll give it a go.

Sadly, my time has passed, however. I'm to the point of bankruptcy or moving back home, with the 'rents.

Actually, it is that bad. Ma already told me to pack my ****.

I see your point, and will give it a go, as I said. However, at this point, I have to take a job to find a job. Further, the job I have to take will only pay minimum wage, hence I's gotta eat Ma's food. :(

You know what's even more in demand now than bartending? Drug dealer.

Two things. First, the job market really is that bad. Low scale jobs will not hire well educated individuals because they will end up costing more. Your strong professional resume might be shooting you in the foot if you're looking for jobs at Target. Second thing, try customer service centers or telemarketing. You might hate the kind of work but right now they are some of the highest paying jobs that are currently hiring. Try to get on with a television or internet provider. These industries are also fairly recession proof because of consumers need for entertainment.

I know of several opprotunities in a few areas of the US. Where are you in the world?

When a place like Applebees or Chilis tells you "you have no experience", I have to ask. What is your work/job history?

Augusta, GA

However, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Comcast, Knology, and so on - all have my resume, and I've been interviewed of over-looked.

Mostly education and some sales.

Out of my ten years of post high school work experience, I've worked 6-7 of those years in schools, churches, teen programs, etc - all dealing with program directing.

3-4 of those years I worked in sales - Jewelry, as I said, and an Assistant Manager at Cingular Wireless.

Chili's, Applebee's and these other bar and grill joints honestly ain't got business telling nobody they have no experience. ****ing chimps jacked on acid meet the minimum qualifications for that ****.

And as for another Customer Service job, I was interview for an inbound, second party, CS job: Sitel, via Verizon.

Upon waiting for my interview, I noticed the scale for employees was off: Higher rate of African-American's vs. European Americans. But more importantly, young females - of any race - vs. males.

I think I saw one older EA gentleman vs. the several younger AA ladies.

I don't get it.

That's what I thought.

Further, how does one gain experience without some place teaching said experience.

I know that is the catch-22; but that is like colleges - any college - saying high school is no longer the prerequisite. One needs to attend a college, before one can attend college.

WTF?!

LOL, well telemarketing and **** usually has a bunch of my folks in there. Now when it comes to the corporate jobs you may see like one or two brothers in there compared to everyone else being white, so hey.

Actually, they generally become managers.

Well played.

I get the slight racist undertones, of said jobs. But this white-brother needs work!

All you gotta do as a server at those places is cater and kiss ass to the group that comes in to be served. If it's a suburban family, you act all corny and ****. If it's some frat boys, you act all "duuuude" and talk about the last time you did a keg stand and ****, even if you never drank a drop in your life...it's about getting them tips.

Funny enough.

My girl's kid brother, whom just graduated with a BA in Marketing, landed an Applebees job, after months of trying to find his sort of work, and is now in the process of Management training.

He had no experience.

This I know. And, trust me, I can "cater" to the crowds.

No lie. I'm moving in with Ma Storm, and applying to Burger King.

:(

My better half is a nurse. AND you'd think that people still get sick and still need doctors and nurses but they were told that most hospitals are on a "hiring" freeze.

For a while, hospitals were throwing bonuses and what not to get nurses to their hospitals.

Odd.

Most of the adds, in the local paper, are from hospitals needing RN's.

One the the paper's pages in actually sponsored by the two big hospitals, in the area.

It's not something you want to happen to a medical professional while they were busy operating on you - a nurse in a Wisconsin hospital was called out of the surgery she was attending by a hospital boss, to tell her she was being made redundant.
The nurse, at a Dean Health clinic in Madison, Wisconsin, was participating in what was described as a minor operation when a manager summoned her and told her she was being laid off.

A spokeman for Dean Health said that while the patient wasn't affected, the lack of a nurse being present for part of the procedure was a violation of medical protocol.

The spokesman also said that other medical staff were present in the surgery. He declined to say what kind of operation was involved.

The nurse was laid off as part of the company's plans to immediately make 90 employees redundant.

Makes my mornings of coffee, beer, and a doughnut some much brighter.
