EXCLUSIVE:20th Century Fox has acquired screen rights to the Mark Millar/Steven McNiven graphic novel Nemesis. Tony Scott is attached to direct and Scott Free will produce.

The graphic novel was written by Millar, whose Wanted and Kick-Ass creations were turned into films, and whose Marvel Comics titles include the revamped X-Men, the Avengers series The Ultimates, and Civil War, the latter of which is DC Comics Superman: Red Son. Nemesis was published in March by Marvel’s Icon Comics imprint. McNiven is the artist behind Civil War and other collaborations with Millar.

Nemesis focuses on Matt Anderson, a billionaire genius who’s the world’s greatest fighter. bent on avenging the death of his beloved parents. The twist is, they were villains and he is also a bad guy, a costumed vigilante who travels the world, picking off top cops. He returns to D.C. to launch a campaign of terror against Blake Morrow, the police chief who captured the caped vigilante’s parents.

Scott Free will set a writer and work on the adaptation. Deal comes as Scott preps the release of the Denzel Washington-Chris Pine drama Unstoppable. He is deciding on his next project, between Potzdamer Platz, Hell’s Angels and The Associate. Mickey Rourke is attached to both Potzdamer Platz and Hell’s Angels, while Shia LaBeouf is attached to The Associate and is the choice to join Rourke in Hell’s Angels. The property was repped by CAA and Harris Miller.

Fantastic concept, I'll be picking the trade up in September, I do wonder though for those that have read it, is the Blake Morrow character an equal b/c the film will need him to be I think, and despite having not read it yet I can see Tom Cruise playing Nemesis.

Like Kick-ass i think this could be another movie that actually improves on the source material.

i hope that the movei is very different fro mthe comic so that i can see Millar lying again infront of cameras. he is such a bad liar and such a media wh...re

Just like Nemesis is simply "Evil Batman", Morrow is basically Jethro Gibbs from NCIS (Even looks exactly like Mark Harmon, so I doubt it's a coincidence), albeit a little more brutal.
Could be a fun movie if they tone down the trademark Millar sillyness.

was the comic remotely good?

sometimes, I like Millar's stuff but at times, he can be too self-indulgent.

Millar commented on the announcement on his official site:

Oh, man. It's so good to finally be able to talk about this:

The man who shot Maverick in Top Gun, Bruce in the Last Boy Scout, yelled action for Will Smith in Enemy of the State, directed Denzel in Man on Fire (one of the finest revenge movies ever made), had Tarantino rework Hackman's dialogue in Crimson Tide and gave me Deneuve's naughtiest performance in The Hunger is directing our movie. Oh, AND he did True Romance, for my money the best of all the Tarantino flicks. Tony Scott: I can't even pretend to be cool about this.

Bryan Hitch and I would reference Tony on a weekly basis when we were doing The Ultimates. Our dream was an Ultimates movie with Scott directing because he can do the character work and the intensity, but also handle scale and action like practically no other. The idea of a him helming a superhero movie had us giddy and here he is directing the one Steve McNiven and I created. We found out last Friday night and managed to keep a secret from all but a few of our closest friends and family. But this is the call I had a couple of weeks back, which I described as the most exciting of my career; Tony on the blower chatting about how he wanted to shoot certain scenes if we gave him the rights. He was buzzing about it, describing Steve as the best comic book artist he's seen in over twenty years. We talked casting, we talked budget (and we're talking way more than Wanted and Kick-Ass put together here in terms of money for him to play with) and we talked with Fox about making this into a major franchise, something they're really going to invest their time and energy into.

As you can imagine, I'm more than excited. Steve is delirious and this puts our books instantly in an entirely different league in Hollywood terms. Tony said this was a very timely project and Fox want to get this moving as soon as possible. Next up is a script and the writer we talked about did one of my top five movies of all time. The actor he's shooting for as the lead character is going to blow your socks off.

I'm happy and Steve's happy. This has been the most exciting week you can imagine and we're enormously appreciative of all the people who have been waiting around for the twenty-four hours we've been waiting for the news to go live. It's incredibly affirming to have people so into the work that they care enough and apologies for the delay in getting this out there, but we hope you agree this is awesome news.

Very best wishes,
MM

Geez, this sounds unnapealing to me.

im gonna stay optimistic until I'm given a visual reason to be pessimistic.

Geez, this sounds unnapealing to me.

Word.

So this film is gonna be filled with distracting seizure inducing editing, over-saturated color and pointless shaky camera techniques that detract from the story? AND it's based on a comic by one of the worst writers I've ever read?

I'll pass.

I fear Millaar is looking to oversaturate the comic book movie market.

$20 says that just like Kick-Ass, the movie will be a million times better than the ****** comic.

i read 1st 2 issues of Nemesis lol and he has the dumbest origin lol unless there is more to it

it is basically you ruined my family i want revenge lol

i wonder who they cast he has blonde hair other than that we dont know what he looks like

he said we wont believe who the lead may be only top tier actor with blonde hair might be jude law

Alot of Millar's comics have good ideas, but always fall short overall
The movies always improve them for me...yes even Wanted

what i want to know is where it is going i dont want it to just be nemesis causing carnage and thats it lol

Hair color isn't really a good indicator. One, someone could dye. Two, they could just not worry about the hair color like Kick-Ass.

yeah i hope scott apporaches this as the antithesis of batman begin, like using the kind of origin template, but as the origin of a villain, following nemsis on his descent into terrorism.

If done right....it'll be epic! but since the comic book with 2 issues in and seems to riding on the "Joker wannabe always smarter then the cops and nothing can stop him" I'm rooting against Nemesis! He's Fun for a short while but I can't root for this guy when he has no weakness and just thinks he's better then everyone....but the story isn't over yet.....It's DARK KNIGHT RETURNS with batman not giving a *****! that was a fun comic book.....in 1986!
