Marvel Comics announced today the promotion of Axel Alonso, formerly Vice President, Executive Editor, to Editor-in-Chief. Alonso steps into the role formerly held by Joe Quesada, who will now be focusing solely on his duties as Chief Creative Officer overseeing Marvel's forays into other entertainment mediums.

"Marvel has a great history of the most dynamic and memorable EICs in comics history and I'm honored to step into this role," said Axel Alonso. "I've been blessed to work with some of the most creative men and women in the world, bringing to life some of the most compelling stories you'll find in any medium. This new role provides me with exciting challenges and prospects I've never encountered before, but I know one thing -- Marvel's getting even bigger in 2011."

Alonso began as a Senior Editor at Marvel in 2000, infusing the publisher with fresh talent and edgy stories as a primary voice behind the Marvel MAX imprint and an editor on acclaimed series like Daredevil, X-Men, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Punisher.

Marvel CCO Joe Quesada said, "It's with tremendous pride that I announce Axel Alonso's promotion to Editor-In-Chief. For over a decade, Axel's been instrumental in bringing fresh new voices to Marvel and reinventing our biggest characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine and so many more. He's fought to create unique imprints like Marvel MAX while also bringing fresh new voices to the Marvel family."

Quesasda continued, "Most of you know Axel from his high profile job as Vice President, Executive Editor and the man behind some of our very best and edgiest books. Time and time again, Axel has proven that he is one of the very best story editors in the history of our medium and one of the finest people I know. And, like everyone here at Marvel, he has one single focus, bringing you the best stories with the best characters in all of comicdom. That's why I have no doubt that Axel will bring Marvel Comics to greater heights than it's ever known!"

Alonso's promotion to EiC is certainly an exciting move for Marvel as they attempt to shake things up and usher in the New Year with a bang.

Please be good...please be good...

Can you guess what my first request for the new Editor-in-Chief is?

Bring The Spectacular Spider-man back? :oldrazz:

He can't do anything about it anyway.

Ha! Ha! You're right, that would be great if he could that!

No, I was referring to my stance about the marriage...

You don't get that high a job by making waves that go against company policy. Not gonna happen.

You guys are kidding yourselves if you think anything will change with Alonso. I remember his continuity being terrible and agreeing with the decision to get rid of the marriage.

I hope he brings back the marriage. I also hope he brings back Ben Reilly.

Do you know what those two hopes have in common? Neither will happen.

...and for the record, I know this won't restore the status quo.

Didn't Quesada get his job that way? Or was there no direction or policy to speak of at Marvel before he came on board?

Yeah, this doesn't really mean anything. They most likely voted on a lot of the changes and Quesada was just a fall guy so those changes don't make people blame Marvel itself.

Besides, I LOVE the marriage being gone :D

Quesada isn't any fall guy. It's not like he's been forced from the job. He's just decided to take a more hands-off approach. He's been doing the job for 10 years, so I imagine this was his choice. I'm sure he's still got heaps of power. He's more like Vladimir Putin... no longer the President, but still behind the scenes pulling the strings of the new President. Alonzo (or Medvedev) is his patsy.

I meant in general, like, he was the fall guy for any negative press or fanboy backlash surrounding changes in the books.

I didn't mean he has become the fall guy by stepping down.

No worries though, I obviously wasn't that clear.

First thing I thought of was his continuity record on Spider-Man. It was terrible, like Alonso had none of the back issues or no one to communicate with to make sure continuity worked.

Looks like business, as has been usual, for the last 10 years at Marvel.

Whoopity do da day.

Quesada was a joke. I don't have the faintest idea of why Marvel would want him at all (Dan Slott either, but that's different).

[Off-Topic: socool, is that you from the HeroHQ forums?!]

I am not a big Quesada fan. They had a FEW good ideas but more than not just ****ed it up even when they did.

Doubt the new guy will be any different but we'll see.
