Screenwriter Ehren Kruger is a busy man these days. With The Brothers Grimm and The Skeleton Key both coming this summer, plus scripts for Blood and Chocolate and John Carter of Mars in progress, the Ring and Scream 3 scripter is clearly sticking to the sci-fi and horror pictures that he got his start with. Now Playing recently grabbed Kruger for a quick update on some of these projects.

“I’m in the writing process for John Carter of Mars, working with the director — [Sky Captain’s] Kerry Conran,” says Kruger of the Edgar Rice Burroughs adaptation. “He’s in, too, with his visual design team — the effects, and the sort of outlandish worlds that need to be created for that. He has to design all that. So we’re pretty [well] along with the script. It’s a faithful adaptation to the novels, but the novels were written in the teens and ’20s, so there’s some degree of modernization just to the tone of them. But in terms to the story, we are trying to be as faithful as we can because those novels inspired a lot of the science fiction and fantasy that came later in the century.”

Woo-hoo! I've been waiting twenty years for someone to attempt this movie.
Having Conran attached to direct is a perfect idea IMO.

Prince of Persia is such a strange movie because it hit all the right notes but yet, something was missing.

IT NEEDED JOHNNY DEPP! Only Depp can make a poorly written Disney/Bruckheimer collaboration worthy of universal praise! :woot:

Just kidding. Although, some of the reviews of that movie left me scratching my head because they pretty much said that. They were expecting Pirates of the Caribbean in the desert I guess, and Jake Gyllenhaal was apparently supposed to be playing Jack Sparrow or something. I don't know.

I do agree that it felt like something was missing but I can't put a finger on what it was. I thought the plot was thin and predictable, but I wasn't expecting it to be brilliant. Jake and Gemma had good chemistry and Alfred Molina was cool. Ben Kingsley was a bit dull, but not bad. The effects and action sequences were pretty good. As far as movies based on video games go, it was definitely one of the best ones. I mean, you compare it to garbage like Street Fighter or anything by Uwe Boll and Paul W.S. Andersuck and it's really no contest.

i hope this movie is good. i sooooo want it to be good. but im not too encouraged by the pics coming out. 2 hours of unconvincing CGI with be nothing but a bore.

Visually it looks good but Kitsch's acting looks... um...

Despite all of the buzz on him I haven't seen any proof that Kitsch can actually act.

The little I watched of Friday Night Lights produced nothing special and he was incredibly bland in Wolverine. Granted that was a horrible movie but his screen presence was zero and any charm was non-existent.

Maybe he will change my mind and be good and interesting in these upcoming films but right now I smell another Sam Worthington on the acting front. Just a pretty face with zero screen presence and nothing behind the eyes.

Not feeling this movie too much either and I didn't even hate the teaser. I'm just getting bad vibes about the whole thing. It smells like another Tron Legacy or Prince of Persia.

Looks pretty solid to me, I can't wait to see it.

I've been waiting for over 40 years to see a live action movie based upon these books...and so far it looks pretty good. Never thought I'd be able to see thousands of Tharks running around....till now.

that trailer didnt do much to showcase the story or character. not a fan of the music choice either.

Yeah, I worry he could be another Worthington, but I hope not. He seems kind of lifeless in the trailer but it's just a trailer so I'll try not to read too much into it. It's harsh to try and judge an entire performance off a couple of lines.

I really want this movie to be good; I just hope they made sure to cast the right actor as John Carter. Because if the movie hits a lull whenever Carter is the central focus in a scene, well... the film isn't going to work.

Yeah, was that Led Zep's Kashmir? Odd song choice for this.

Not as weird as Tool in that Captain America trailer, but still an odd choice.

i think they were going for the trippy arabian nights type vibe with Kashmir.

I wasn't excited by the quick snippet of the trailer, although I need to see the whole thing to make a fair judgment.

it was either kashmir or someone sampling kashmir. i couldnt quite tell. either way, i love zep and i love john carter....but i dont think the two need to be mixed.

Yeah, to be fair, possibly the coolest scene (the white ape fight in the arena) is the one that we barely see because of the way they introduced the trailer.

I really f***ing hate when they premiere trailers on shows like this.

This is going to be be one of the biggest flops in cinematic history.

It really does look like Prince of Persia. As cheesy, with possibly an even worse lead.

Insanely bloated budget, cheap and nerdy looking, derivative storyline. It may end up being a great movie, but I just can't see people flocking to another Avatar-type flick, especially when it doesn't have the novelty of great visual effects and revolutionary 3D.

All the other movies are derivative of the books this movie is based on.

Avatar must have had the same script at some point because things are looking very similar premise wise.

But the films came out first and just simply looked better then this.

Does it really matter if the other work is derivative when on the big screen the others dwarf John Carter? It looks so corny and basic. Level 1 entry into the genre.

This coming from a guy who didn't like Avatar outside of the Terra Nova guy. :awesome:
