Is John McCain shooting himself in the foot in term of his presidential chances by supporting Bush's troop surge?

Oops!! I miss read it, dam my eyes!

I dont really think it will effect him that much.

Does he have feet?
I thought he had those chimp hand feet things for feet.

I don't think so either. McCain has enough military credibility that no Republican (and even some Democrats) would be willing to attack him personally on this issue (despite disagreeing with the surge. It will also look like McCain will take an unpopular position if he thinks its right.

Possibly. It all depends IMO on what happens in the next 6 months.

As far as the general election is concerned, I think he is. The Iraq War is becoming more and more unpopular with the electorate. The general consensus is that we should get out of there. This is why a few of the Republican candidates for President are voicing their opposition to Bush's surge plan. And you know in 2008, 21 Republican Senators will be up for re-election, and they are also voicing their oppostition.

I think it will depend on what happens in the relatively near future. Right now, it does look like he might be shooting himslef in the foot, but that could easily change in the future and become a huge bonus for him.Either way, I am glad he is sticking to it. I admire tht he is still standing up for what he believes in even though it might not be the most popular choice.

Yes,the Americans want out of Iraq and anyone who supports it is not going to gain anything.

I could not have put it any better myself.

I read the McClaine thing as well. Then I read the post, & was like. McClaine is running for president in the next movie? & he supports more troops. WTF!! LOL.

Anyway. Yes it will hurt him. Badly. I myself was looking forward to him running until he started dining with Falewell(sp?), & kissing Bush's a**.

No, Americans want a plan for Iraq. Whether it is pulling out or changing strategy, whatever. Because it's obvious that the current strategy is not working. Stop thinking that you know about the United States because you know pretty much jack s**t about it.

Is John McCain going to gain from supporting increasing troop levels? Probally not, but he's not shooting himself in the foot by this.

yes.Itll make the people who respect him for the whole pow camp thing think hes forgetten or somthing, thats because there idiots of course but still. Its gonna hurt him to support bush on anything at this point.

I dont think his support of the surge is a big plus for him, but I dont know if it takes him off the Republican ticket either.

Ditto the handsome man directly above me. :o

I believe it to be a good move for him politically. He doesn't need to worry about what the Dems think about him just yet. Just the Republicans.

He's come off in the past as having liberal tendencies so maybe some of the more conservative Republicans will forget and forgive the past by him supporting GWB's plan now.

McCain's trying to get back on the GOP's good side. But apparently he doesn't realize that they're done with him and the only way he was to reach out to moderates. Oh well, better luck in 2010.

You guys are forgetting something. The real question is whether republicans are hurting their own chances at power by supporting the sure, and not whether McCain is hurting his chances. I voted no on the poll, for one obvious reasons.

it's basically impossible for McCain to win the general election if he doesn't get nominated first. He isn't going to get nominated by taking sides with the democrats on the Iraq war. The number of people who support the surge, by coincedence are the exact same number of people who approve of President Bush.

If John opposes Bush on Iraq he wont get nominated. It's true that after he's nominated it will hurt him, but to even get his foot in the door he has to support it.

Well said and true

i voted yes, but i think he's already done the most damage to his image by abandoning his ideals and sucking up to far-right religious people like pat robertson and jerry fallwell after saying he'd never do that back in the 2000 election. add that to the fact that he's hired some seriously shady individuals tied to the new hampshire phone jamming scandal during the '04 primaries to run his campaign and he's lost all respect from me. he's a sellout who'll do anything to get elected.
